 Virtualization refers to the creation of a virtual version of any component. These components
can be storage devices, applications, computer hardware platforms and network resources.
Virtualization is the technology through which multiple simulated environments or dedicated
resources can be created from a single hardware.
 Regardless of the size of the business, it contributes majorly to lower IT expenses and to
enhance efficiency. Virtualization is made possible with the aid of a software that enables the
installation of multiple operating systems on a system.
 Virtualization can be of many types. This PPT’s content focuses on four major types of
virtualization. These are network virtualization, storage virtualization, application virtualization
and desktop virtualization.
3
Virtualization
 Any virtual environment that works as a virtual system and is equipped with its own memory,
storage, central processing system and network interface that are present on a hardware, is
referred to as a virtual machine. It can be off or on-premises.
 There is a software called hypervisor that separates a virtual machine’s resources from the
hardware. It also ensures appropriate provisioning of a VM’s resources. The physical machine
that is equipped with a hypervisor is known as the host machine or host. The multiple virtual
machines that use the resources are called guests.
4
Virtual Machine(VM)
 Any data center refers to a physical facility which is used for the purpose of housing
organizations’ data as well as their critical applications. Every data center is equipped with a
network of computing and storage resources through which shared applications and data are
delivered. Servers, storage systems, routers, firewalls, switches and application-delivery
controllers are the main components of a typical data center.
 Data center space is often provided by web hosts along with Internet connectivity for the
servers that are located in their data center. The next slide will touch upon web hosting briefly.

Whoa!That’s a big number, aren’t
you proud?
 Web hosting is a service that is provided by web hosting companies. The required server space
as well as the necessary technologies and services that are needed to make a website
accessible are provided through web hosting.
 Web hosting can be of many types, such as shared, dedicated, reseller, cloud,WordPress,VPS etc.
Those web hosting companies that provide exceptional quality of service are often referred to
as the “BestWebsite Hosting Company” or as the “BestWindows Hosting Company” or as the
“Top Cloud Hosting Company”.
7
Web Hosting
 Data center virtualization involves a data center’s migration from physical servers to a virtual
environment with the aid of cloud computing technology. Data center virtualization enables
businesses to run multiple applications and operating systems on a cloud-based single server.
This helps to achieve enhanced efficiency as well as increases economies of scale.
8
Data CenterVirtualization
Virtualization offers many benefits. These are mentioned below, in no particular order.
 Enhanced IT scalability, productivity and flexibility
 Overall cost savings, along with a reduction in operational and capital costs
 Enhanced mobility with regard to workload
 Reduction in downtime as well as an improvement in disaster recovery
 Enhanced responsiveness and swifter provisioning of resources and applications
 Automated operations and simplified management of data centers
 Better performance and an increase in the availability of resources
9
Benefits ofVirtualization
 The four main types of virtualization are network virtualization, storage virtualization,
application virtualization and desktop virtualization. These will be touched upon in more detail
in the following slides.
10
4 MainTypes ofVirtualization
 This type of virtualization involves a network’s available resources. In network virtualization a
physical network is entirely replicated. This enables applications to run on a virtual network in a
way as if these were running on a physical network.
 Network virtualization apportions the available bandwidth among discrete channels. Each of
these channels can be secured separately by admins. These channels can be assigned and
reassigned to specific devices and this can be done in real-time.
 It ensures greater operational efficiency, improves a network’s speed as well as availability and
security.
11
NetworkVirtualization
 This is a type of virtualization that uses software for the purpose of finding physical storage
space in multiple devices and consecutively forms a single storage device that can be used by
machines. I/O requests are received from virtual machines and physical devices by the software.
These requests are then sent to the physical storage’s location, which is a part of the overall
storage facility. This pooled storage can be managed from a central console.
 Virtualizing a data center usually makes use of storage virtualization along with other
virtualized resources. Its benefits include enhanced reliability and better performance, a
reduction in hardware costs along with heterogeneous storage types’ simplified management.
12
StorageVirtualization
 Application virtualization enables apps to run separately from the devises that access these
apps. This type of virtualization allows admins to install, patch as well as update a single version
of an app instead of carrying it out multiple times.
 The server-based approach involves application virtualization. In this approach an application
runs in a virtual machine and users’ interaction with the application takes place through a
remote display protocol. Since an application cannot run without an operating system,
application virtualization is essentially desktop virtualization. The next slide focuses on desktop
virtualization.
13
ApplicationVirtualization
 The aim of desktop virtualization is to isolate the operating system of a desktop from where it
can be accessed by users. Desktop virtualization can be of many types.
 When desktops are deployed as a managed service, it ensures swifter response with regard to
evolving requirements of an organization.
