3. TARGETING
Before you begin the process of marketing segmentation
you must figure out your target market. This consist of all the
groups of people you plan on marketing your product to. Think of
what your product does to benefit people and what types of
people benefit from it.
Some examples: Product vs. Customer
• Goth cloths vs. Goth people
• Wooden crosses vs. Religious people

After you have found your target market you then separate the
different groups of people depending on their demographics. This
makes the marketing process seem more personal and allows
you to focus on one group at a time.
Some examples of demographics:
• Age
• Religion
• Culture
• Race
SEGMENTATION
5. POSITIONING
Positioning is a multi-step process. The process of positioning is
seen as the way consumers view your product. The 4P's of
marketing are the most well know ways to practice positioning.
The 4P's are:
• Promotion
• Place
• Product
• Price
6. THE 4P'S OF
MARKETING
• Promotion – How are you going to promote your
product? What image are you striving to create?
• Place – Where are you located? Are you easy to reach?
Is the location well populated?
• Product – What is it you are selling?
• Price – How much are you selling it for?
7. EXAMPLE
For example, let's say I am starting a bakery/cafe. The first thing I
want to do when marketing is, know who I am targeting. Next, I
want to separate those that I am targeting into specific groups.
And last but not least I want to figure out how best to use the 4ps
to my advantage while positioning.
• Targeting – My target market will be people who are hungry.
• Segmentation - I will break the target market down into more
specific groups, let's say teenagers and students.
• Positioning - I will promote through social media, flyers and
word of mouth. My place will be a location near a school or
campus. My products are various types of coffee and treats.
My price will be based off of the usually income of my target
market.
8. SUMMARY
In conclusion, marketing targeting, segmentation
and positioning is very important when running
your own business or participating in any type of
marketing project.
