Students from some countries must complete a foundation year called "Studienkolleg" before being eligible to apply for bachelor's degree programs at German universities. Studienkolleg provides subject-specific preparation in German language for one year and concludes with an exam called Feststellungsprüfung. Studienkolleg can be completed through public or private options. Public Studienkolleg is associated with a university but has limited seats, while private Studienkolleg charges tuition but allows completion in as little as six months. After successfully completing Studienkolleg and passing the Feststellungsprüfung, students can then apply for bachelor's degrees taught in English or German.
