Central Region has recorded the most violent incidents in the November-December 2022. It recorded 16 incidents which contributed 38% of total incidents. This represents a take over from the Ashanti Region considering the two previous reports i.e., June-July and August-October 2022.

2. Executive Summary
From FOSDA’s November-December 2022 monitoring of violent incidents in Ghana, the number of
violent incidents tracked amounted to Forty-two (42). This is a drastic reduction by 83 cases compared
to the August-October 2022 monitoring. The overall breakdown for the November-December
monitoring includes;
1. Physical Violence - 24 cases, representing 57%
2. Gun Violence - 18 cases, representing 43%
3. Sexual Violence - 0 cases
4. Psychological Violence – 0 cases
5. Social Violence – 0 cases
6. Economic Violence – 0 cases
7. Political Violence – 0 cases.
Central Region recorded 16 incidents which contributed 38% of total incidents whiles Ashanti region
(10) incidents contributed 24%. Greater Accra (3) incidents contributed 7%. Northern Region and
Bono Region also recorded 3 incidents each representing 7% for each. Upper East Region recorded 2
incidents representing 5%. Five regions that is, Eastern, Western, North East, North East, Western
North and Volta regions recorded 1 incident each which represents 2.4% for each. There was no violent
incident recorded in the Savannah, Upper West, Oti, Ahafo and Bono East Regions.
This is the second time in a row within a period of 5 months i.e., August-December that the Bono East
region has record zero incidents of violence.
A total of 36 injuries and 51 deaths occurred during the period under review. Overall, forty-nine (49)
men were impacted compared to 15 women and 3 children. Relatively, more men 64% suffered from
violent related injuries, compared to women 14% and children 3%. A similar observation is also
observed in the number of death where 51% of the victims were men, women constituted 20% and
children 4%.

3. VIOLENT INCIDENTS IN GHANA
A MEDIA MONITORING REPORT
1.1 General Overview
This media monitoring report covers a period of 2months i.e., November and December 2022, a total
of forty-two (42) violent incidents were reported by ten (10) 1
media houses including online and print
media sources. The monitoring focused on seven (7) three major categories of violence; Economic,
Physical, Gun, Sexual and Psychological, Political and Social violence. Only two categories of
violence were recorded in this specific monitoring, i.e. Physical Violence with 24 cases, representing
57%. Eighteen (18) of the incidents representing 43% of the total incidents were gun related. The
remaining categories did not record any incident.
Between November to December 2022. reports of violent incidents by the selected media source
declined significantly from a total of 26 violent incidents in the month of November 2022 to 16
incidents in December 2022 resulting in a 38% decline in the rate of violent incidents for the period.
During the period under review, the breakdown of the 42 incidents is represented in the table 1 below:

5. 1.2 Regional Distribution of Violent Incidents Monitored
Central Region recorded 16 incidents which contributed 38% of total incidents whiles Ashanti region
(10) incidents contributed 24%. Greater Accra (3) incidents contributed 7%. Northern Region and
Bono Region also recorded 3 incidents each representing 7% for each. Upper East Region recorded 2
incidents representing 5%. Five regions that is, Eastern, Western, North East, North East, Western
North and Volta regions recorded 1 incident each which represents 2.4% for each. There was no violent
incident recorded in the Savannah, Upper West, Oti, Ahafo and Bono East Regions.
This is the second time in a row within a period of 5 months i.e., August-December that the Bono East
region has record zero incidents of violence.

The zonal breakdown also shows that the Coastal regions (Greater Accra, Central, Western and Volta)
recorded the highest with 21 incidents representing 50%. The middle zone (Ashanti, Eastern, Oti,
Western North, Bono and Ahafo) followed with 15 incidents representing 36%. The Northern regions
(Upper East, Upper West, North East, Savannah and Northern) contributed only 6 incidents
representing 14%.
From this point of view, it can be observed that violence in the country is densely concentrated in the
coastal zone. Comparatively, the northern zone is relatively low on violent incidents.

7. CASUALTIES RECORDED
A total of 36 injuries and 51 deaths occurred during the period under review. Overall, forty-nine (49)
men were impacted compared to 15 women and 3 children. Relatively, more men 64% suffered from
violent related injuries, compared to women 14% and children 3%. A similar observation is also

8. observed in the number of death where 51% of the victims were men, women constituted 20% and
children 4%. The monitoring shows that, the direct impact of violent incidents on men is higher
compared to women and children. Details of 7 cases of injures and 13 cases of deaths reported were
not provided.
1. Gun Violence
There was a total of 18-gun related violence during the monitoring period. Ten (10) of these gun
incidents occurred in the month of November and eight (8) in the month of December. A total of nine
(9) out of 16 regions experienced gun related violence. They include Ashanti region (5), Central (4),
Northern (2), Upper East (2), Greater Accra (1), Bono region (1), Western (1) and Western North (1).

9. The outcome of the monitoring shows a reduction in gun violence. In the month of December, a total
of 10-gun related events were reported in the media. This, reduced to 8 in the month of December.
2. Physical Violence
Physical violence recorded 24 out of a total 42 cases. The physical violent incidents occurred in 7 out
of 16 regions. Central region leads with 12 cases representing 50%, followed by Ashanti region with
5 cases (21%), Greater Accra region with 2 cases and Bono region also with 2 cases contributed 8%
each. Northern region recorded 1 case, Eastern region and North East region recorded 1 each
representing 4.2% each. There were no physical violence incidents in 9 regions i.e., Upper East,

10. Western, Western North, Volta, Savannah, Upper West, Oti, Ahafo and Bono East regions. The figure
below shows the count and share of physical violence from a regional point of view.
3. Conclusions
Violent incidents continue to decline since August 2022. From 52 in August to 44 in September, and
29 in October 2022. The current monitoring period shows further decline from 26 in November to 16
in December 2022.
Additionally, out of the 7 types of violence that were being monitored in the current period only 2 i.e.,
Physical and Gun violence recorded cases.
Worryingly, the total deaths recorded i.e., 51 was more than the total number of violent incidents.

The alleged killing of an old man at Sing-Naatin resulted in
sporadic gunshots leaving five persons dead. The spillover of
gunshots resulted in the death of two other persons and one
injured bringing the death toll to seven.

Region
Six persons have been killed by unknown gunmen men in
renewed ethnic disturbances while three others have been
injured.
December Volta Region Police have arrested 15 suspects in connection to a chieftaincy
violence that resulted in the death of five people and injury to

ammunitions.

Exchange of gunfire between two parties in Enchi community
over attack on paramount chief of Enchi Traditional council
November Western Region Chinese miners mining illegally in a forest at Dompim close to
