IFRS9; the challenges mortgage portfolio owners face
IFRS9 is a new accounting standard that will affect European and UK mortgage lenders and Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) from January 2018. It will replace IAS39.
The challenge for lenders and SPVs
• Historic data will be required to carry out the new calculations
• New systems, scorecards and processes will need to be developed
• There could be a 50% increase in impairment charges as a result of IFRS9 – and potentially more (Deloitte survey, 2014)

Mortgage Rescue Scheme
The Mortgage Rescue Scheme provides £9.5 million in social housing grants each year to help families facing homelessness due to difficulties paying their mortgages; it does this by providing equity loans to reduce mortgage payments or allowing housing associations to purchase the property so the family can remain as tenants. To qualify, one must have their lender commence legal action, housing must be the primary residence, and the homeowner must be unable to sell and buy cheaper housing; over 350 families have been helped through approvals and purchases under the program so far.
Local Housing Allowance - Tenant Support Account
Angela Jones discusses a local housing allowance program that pays tenants' rent directly to their credit union accounts. The credit union then passes the funds to the landlord on the tenant's behalf to avoid temptation that could arise if rent money was paid into tenants' personal bank accounts. Sandia National Laboratories is developing virtual power plant (VPP) technology to help integrate renewable energy into the electric grid. Sandia is researching the optimization, control, and cybersecurity of VPPs. In 2017, they will demonstrate a VPP using real hardware at their Distributed Energy Technologies Laboratory. Microgrids provide game-changing solutions for developed and developing electricity grids. They can be implemented in phases, starting with reducing demand and adding onsite generation and storage, and advancing to independent grid operation. Microgrids address energy poverty by providing reliable access for the 1.4 billion people living without electricity and 1 billion with unreliable access. The United Nations is working to achieve universal energy access by 2030 through initiatives like microgrid projects and solar trailers in Haiti. Microgrids benefit both developed and developing areas by improving reliability, integrating renewables and storage, enabling consumer participation, and improving quality of life, especially in disaster situations.

Citizen Actuation For Lightweight Energy Management
In this work, we aim to utilise the concept of citizen sensors but also introduce the theory of citizen actuation. Citizen sensors observe, report, and collect data – we propose by supporting these citizen sensors with methods to affect their surroundings we enable them to become citizen actuators. We outline a use case for citizen actuation in the Energy Management domain, propose an architecture (a Cyber-Physical Social System) built on previous work in Energy Management with Twitter integration, use of Complex Event Processing (CEP), and perform an experiment to test this theory. We motivate the need for citizen actuation in Building Management Systems due to the high cost of actuation systems. We define the concept of citizen actuation and outline an experiment that shows a reduction in average energy usage of 24%. The experiment supports the concept of citizen actuation to improve energy usage within the experimental environment and we discuss future research directions in this area.

Condensing Boilers: Are they cost effective?

- A single network provider can simplify program administration and enable integrated demand response capabilities across different charging locations and hardware options. However, it may limit customer choice.
- Make-ready incentives and rebates with multiple qualified network providers gives more customer choice but makes demand response coordination challenging if networks are not interoperable.
- Utility ownership of charging infrastructure allows more direct control over demand response but may require larger upfront investment compared to make-ready incentives.
- Analyzing customized charging data from a single network can provide valuable insights for utilities to better understand customer needs and charging behaviors.
Humidification Retrofits Deliver Residential Furnace Efficiency
This document summarizes the results of a field study evaluating the performance of transport membrane humidifiers (TMHs) retrofitted to standard efficiency furnaces. The study found that TMHs increased furnace efficiency by 9% for space heating and humidification by adding over 10,500 BTUs per hour. Demand control systems use sensors and controls to reduce hot water recirculation pump runtime when hot water is not being used. The project monitored 6 sites before and after installing demand control systems. On average, the systems reduced thermal energy use by 14-18% and pump electricity use by 70-96%, saving $125-1356 per year depending on the site. Optimized Operation of Indoor Public Pool Facilities
This webinar discussed research into optimizing the operation of indoor public pool facilities in Minnesota to save energy. The research characterized over 2,000 indoor pools statewide, conducted in-depth evaluations at 6 sites, and identified key savings opportunities. Statewide, HVAC control upgrades had the largest potential savings. Operational improvements like adjusting temperature and humidity setpoints and installing pool covers could also significantly reduce energy use. The webinar provided recommendations for utility programs and introduced guides developed for pool operators and recommissioning providers.

All attendees will take away a set of key foundational knowledge and a high-level learning path for leveling up test automation skills and ensuring they add value to their organizations.
Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

From Natural Language to Structured Solr Queries using LLMs
This talk draws on experimentation to enable AI applications with Solr. One important use case is to use AI for better accessibility and discoverability of the data: while User eXperience techniques, lexical search improvements, and data harmonization can take organizations to a good level of accessibility, a structural (or “cognitive” gap) remains between the data user needs and the data producer constraints.
That is where AI – and most importantly, Natural Language Processing and Large Language Model techniques – could make a difference. This natural language, conversational engine could facilitate access and usage of the data leveraging the semantics of any data source.
The objective of the presentation is to propose a technical approach and a way forward to achieve this goal.
The key concept is to enable users to express their search queries in natural language, which the LLM then enriches, interprets, and translates into structured queries based on the Solr index’s metadata.
This approach leverages the LLM’s ability to understand the nuances of natural language and the structure of documents within Apache Solr.
The LLM acts as an intermediary agent, offering a transparent experience to users automatically and potentially uncovering relevant documents that conventional search methods might overlook. The presentation will include the results of this experimental work, lessons learned, best practices, and the scope of future work that should improve the approach and make it production-ready.

Also, we will look into one of the largest DDoS attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure that happened in February 2022. We'll see, what techniques helped to keep the web resources available for Ukrainians and how AWS improved DDoS protection for all customers based on Ukraine experience
