Singapore's environmentally conscious construction has
earned recognition from several agencies. In 2012, the
mixed-use property Jem®, which encompasses more than
1.1 million square feet, won distinction as the Best
Innovative Green Building at the MIPIM Asia Awards. The
following year, the head of sustainability at the
development firm behind Jem® garnered distinction as
Green Advocate of the Year from the Building and
Construction Authority. Each year, water-saving measures
at the property offset the energy used by more than 2,000
apartments; the building also capitalizes on natural light
and features an innovative air conditioning design.

The Building and Construction Authority in Singapore
encourages other companies to emulate the success of
Jem®. Contractors looking to complete civil engineering or
general projects for the city-state must obtain certification
in the Green and Gracious Builders Scheme, a move that
will ultimately include more than 300 firms.
