Chapter 17 Mutual Funds and Hedge Funds
Chapter 17
1. Why are mutual funds popular with individual investors?
Able to enjoy economies of scale by incurring lower transaction costs and commissions. Provide
opportunities for small investors to invest in a liquid and diversified portfolio of financial securities.
2. What is the purpose of index funds? How does this differ from other equity mutual funds? Why
are index funds growing in popularity? Index funds are funds in which managers buy securities in
proportions similar to those included in a specified major index. Index funds involve little research
or management, which results in lower management fees and higher returns than actively managed
funds. Actively managed funds turn over their holdings rapidly.

Insider Trading and Sec Fraud Enforcement Act of 1988 required mutual funds to develop
mechanisms and procedures to avoid insider trading abuses. Market Reform Act of 1990 allows the
SEC to introduce circuit breakers to halt trading on exchanges and restrict program trading when it
is deemed necessary. National Sec Market Improvement Act 1996 exempts mutual fundcompanies
from oversight by state securities regulators.
8. In what ways are hedge funds different from mutual funds?
Are not subject to heavy regulation that apply to mutual funds. Do not have to disclose their
activities to third parties. Because of less regulation, they use aggressive strategies that are
unavailable to mutual funds. Actual data cannot be individually tracked. Self reported. Take
positions speculating that some prices will rise faster than others. Do not have to register with
SEC. They avoid regulation by limiting the number of investors to less than 100 and by requiring
investors to be accredited.
9. What are the primary differences between index funds and ETFs? What are two examples of
ETFs?
ETFs are traded on a stock exchange at prices that are determined by the market.Etfs can be traded
during the day, they can be purchased on margin and sold short by an investor. ETF investors can

King David Essay
As we examine the heroes of the faith outlined for us in the Old Testament, we would be hard
pressed to find a more faithful man that King David. After the death of King Saul, David
became the King of the Hebrew people. David, who was meek and pious, steadfastly believed in
the true God and tried to do His will. He had endured much persecution from Saul and other
enemies but did not become bitter, did not lift his hand against Saul, as he was the Lord s
anointed, but placed all his hope in God, and the Lord delivered him from all his enemies.... Show

Uriah refused to go home to his wife, so David sent Uriah to the front lines of battle, where he
was killed. David then married Bathsheba. When confronted by Nathan the prophet, David
admitted his sin. In punishment, Bathsheba s child died and David was cursed with the promise
of a rebellion from within his own house. Bathsheba and David soon conceived a second son,
Solomon. Here we see David in his first major fall from grace. King David accomplished a great
evil, a two fold sin. Not only did he commit adultery, but also he also sent Uriah into battle so that
he would be killed. David, being blinded by his selfishness, did not notice that he had committed
a great sin in the eyes of God. David s personal strife continued when his son Amnon raped Tamar,
Amnon s half sister. Absalom, who was David s son and Tamar s brother, then killed Amnon.
Absalom fled, but David could not stop thinking about him. Finally, Joab convinced David to allow
Absalom to return. Absalom was a handsome man and became popular with the people of Israel.
Then, 40 years after Samuel had anointed David king, Absalom, along with 200 men,

The Dark Ages Of Europe
The Dark Ages of Europe is one of the most known horrible times recorded in human history.
When Rome finally crumbled it was a devastating time, it lead to the worst time period that
Europe has ever seen; full of disease and poverty. It started in 410 A.D and ended in 1200 A.D.
During this time people would rather die a horrible death than to actually live through this time.
Terrifying Vikings tore through the continent along with cruel Knights. Barbarians ravaged
through what was first the amazing Rome and shoved it on its knees. People lived in huts and
worst of all, the worst enemy of them all was the pandemic The Black Death. We ll tour you
through what s it was like during ..... The Dark Ages.
At the beginning of this time period, before the decline, Rome was the mother of the world. It is
the largest recorded empire ever known and was one of the wonders of the world. It was the center
of trade and was the protector of Europe. The fall of this miraculous empire was the very beginning
of the dark ages. Without Rome s protection, that meant that western Europe was defenseless
against others. Eastern Europe still had rulers Justinian and Theodora, but they weren t much help
to the beginning of the fall of Europe. Without Rome s trade, they didn t have any money or
supplies. The fall of Rome s main center lead to the beginning of the Dark Ages.
During the Dark Ages, the people of Europe became more savage and greedy then they were

accused of drug abuse and convicted of drugging and raping three women, two of them former
members of his Arlington megachurch. According to one published report, Agape lost at least 90
percent of its weekly worshippers when Rev. Hornbuckle s crimes were made public. Consistent
with such a decline in attendance, another published report suggests that the church went through
bankruptcy following the legal troubles and lawsuits. In fact, financial reports filed with the court
showed a church struggling to stay afloat despite bankruptcy protection. In addition to losing his
2500 member congregation, Rebecca A Lopez, reporter for Texas news outlet WFAA, reports that
when Renee Hornbuckle, Rev. Hornbuckle s wife, found that that her husband was convicted of all
three counts and sentenced to 15 years in prison, she shut the door on that part of her life. She
divorced her husband and raised their three children alone. Pastor Terry Hornbuckle dropped the

The National Incident Management System
Ever since the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon, the
government took time in order to do an After Actions Review (AAR) on what occurred, what
caused it, what actions were taken, and what can be done in order to correct the mistakes that took
place? One of the issues that occurred was all of the agencies and private sectors failure to have a
plan/template to use in case of a crisis occurring. After the Gilmore Commission put out their report
on the lessons learned from September 11, 2001, in 2003, the government created the National
Incident Management Systemto facilitate this issue (Walsh, 2012, p.3 4). The National Incident
ManagementSystem is a systematic approach to a national template when dealing with incident
management. This is how incidents are managed across all agencies to ensure protection, response
time, mitigation of duties, and recovery (Walsh, 2012, p.4). In order to use the National Incident
management System effectively, you must use the five major components. These components are
used throughout government organizations, non government organizations, and private sectors.
The five major components consist of: (1) preparedness; (2) communications and information
management; (3) command and management; (4) ongoing management and maintenance; and (5)
resource management (Walsh, 2012, p. 6). The first component is preparedness, which requires that
the incident commander (IC) assess the situation, plan out the strategy,

The Public Sphere Of The Canadian Public
Since the beginning of the digital era, technological advancements have dramatically increased the
capability of media and decreased the barriers that one may experience to participate in said
communication. Although these advances have created several opportunities for the majority of
the Canadian public to participate in communications, there are still several obstacles faced by
minority groups: making participation difficult or impossible. In order to counter these barriers, the
Canadian government has been taking steps to provide all Canadians with national access to
communications services, catering to the needs of a few to benefit many. This is because in taking
steps to provide the communication services to all Canadians increases the ability of all citizens to
participate in the public sphere the internet creates. Moreover, increasing the communication
services availability strengthens the ethnic identity of minority peoples in Canada, reinforcing the
ideal of Canada being a Cultural Mosaic. Lastly, creating possibilities for these ethnic and cultural
minorities to represent themselves in the media nationally allows for positive perceptions of these
groups to be developed. Although members of the cultural majority may disagree, the actions taken
by the Canadian government to provide communications services to all Canadians is a good thing
as it benefits the entire country.

the 1960 s. Researchers state that organizational commitments, like job satisfaction, are human
attitudes. However, both concepts differ because commitment is more global, and reflects a general
affective response to the organization as a whole. Job satisfaction reflects the individual s

weird insulation surrounding the edges of the door. Footsteps were heard. Jack Flame, Nick

Why Should We Be Interested In Stars

Birth of a Star
Why should we be interested in stars?
We should be interested in stars because they produce the factors such as light and energy that stirs
and heats the gas and dust in space and makes life on planets like Earth possible.
To be a star, an object has to have at least about one tenth the mass of the Sun. Any self gravitating
cloud that attempts to become a star with less material would never develop the pressures and
temperatures in its interior needed for the ignition of the nuclear processes that make stars shine. 2

This causes the ball, now a star, to shine. Depending on the mass of the star, they can reach
different types of fusion. Normal stars that have a mass of up to 4 times the sun can only have
hydrogen fusion, helium fusion, and carbon fission. Stars with a bigger mass is classified as a
massive star, and they undergo multiple stages. They start out similar to the normal stars with
hydrogen fusion, helium fusion and carbon fission, but continue over to oxygen fusion, and
silicon fusion. The end product of Silicon is Iron. No star can fuse Iron, it will die. How much
gas and dust is collected during the star s formation determines the size and colour of the star. As
time passes by, stars fight the inward pull of the force of gravity. The outward pressure created by
the nuclear reactions pushing away from the star s core keeps the star whole. However, these
nuclear reactions require hydrogen. Eventually the supply of hydrogen in the core runs out and the
star begins to

Short Term Cognition
The term cognition refers to all the mental structures and processes involved in reception, storage,

Copious research has been conducted by psychologists on memory and different methods to how to

conclusion that words tied to visual imagery have a stronger chance of being remembered than just
their verbal associations.

Essay On Gender Expectations In Romeo And Juliet
In the play, Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare both Romeo and Juliet fit into gender
expectations in some ways. Gender roles are stereotypes that males and females fulfill and each
of the same gender is supposed to follow by a courtesy code. Most gender roles are not being
followed anymore as shown by the fact that women like sports as much as men; men can now stay
at home and have the females in the family work. Although Juliet conforms to genderexpectations
by making irrational decisions, being childish and depending on others, but in some circumstances,
she also defies them by not listening to her father.
To start with, Juliet is easily swayed into rash decisions without thinking them through. Towards the
beginning of the play, Juliet finds out that Romeo is a Montague. Juliet, at the party, states that her

Near the beginning of the book, after Romeo and Juliet had met, Juliet expresses O Romeo,
Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?/ Deny thy father and refuse thy name./ Or, if thou wilt not,
be but sworn my love, (ii:ii 36 38). This quote shows that Juliet has fantasies about Romeo just
like teenaged girls would have about guys nowadays. When Romeo had recently been banished
and Tybalt had just been killed, Juliet is informed of her parents decision to make her marry
Paris and she had an extremely childish and pouty reaction. Now, by Saint Peter s Church, and
Peter too, He shall not make me there a joyful bride. (iii:v 121 122). This shows Juliet portrayed
as a pouty girl trying to get her way by throwing a temper tantrum which is very childish. This
portrays Juliet as a childish teenager with fantasies. Not only is Juliet portrayed as a typical
teenage girl who acts very immature she also is a figure of her time in that she is believed to by
her father that she would do whatever he

The Worst Miracle Drug For Gastrointestinal Patients
The Worst Miracle Drug Scientists from the Netherlands, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Italy
studied Ibuprofen, which originated as an anti acidic drug for gastrointestinal patients. The
purpose of the study was to assess the safety of non inflammatory drugs to treat cardiovascular
disease (BMJ 2016, pg.1). Accordingly, of this study s 10 million participants, 92% had
cardiovascular disease caused by painkillers, and those who stopped using Ibuprofenreduced risk of
worsening cardiovascular condition. Various age ranges received different treatments. For
minors, physicians lowered doses as a precautionary measure. By contrast, long term users above
age seventy seven who were prescribed higher doses showed an increased risk of heart attack.
Various ages, races, and sexes were tested to generalize results. Hospitalization occurred in 95% of
frequent ibuprofen users. Long term usage showed destruction of the gastrointestinal tract.
Ibuprofen was later found to lead to stomach ulcers. The label clearly explains to consumers to
consult a GI doctor before consumption. Ibuprofen deprives the heart of oxygen enriched blood,
which may result in heart failure. Readers will draw focus on the alarm and potential health scares
through medical evidence. As I compared the British Medical Journaland the guardian, all relative

The Mysterious Great Sphinx of Giza Essay
I Thought There Would Be Answers: The Mysterious Great Sphinx of Giza
At the request of Napoleon Bonaparte in the early 1800 s Dominique Vivant Baron Denon French
artist and diplomat was to record the exploits and accomplishments of Bonaparte s Egyptian
campaign. In 1802, he published his travels. The perfection given by the Egyptians to the
representations of their animals proves that they were not without an idea of that bold style which
expresses much character in a few lines, and their execution tended to the grave, and to ideal
perfection, as we have already remarked in instance of the Sphinx. The generally accepted date of
the great Sphinx of Giza is 2500BC attributed to Pharaoh Khafre of the fourth dynasty. If this is the

The Sphinx represents the guardian of the Giza plateau. Revered in Ancient Egypt the feline form
has a long association with royalty, power and protection. An evacuation lead by French
archaeologist Dr. Alain Zivie believed inscriptions suggest Egyptians bred lions as well as buried
them in sacred cemeteries. In 2001, Zive and his crew found a mummified lion in the tomb of a
woman understood to be the wet nurse of Pharaoh Tutankhamen dated to 1430. The wear of the
lion s teeth indicate it lived to old age and was in captivity.
One theorist, Robert Temple, declares the Sphinx is not a lion at all, because of the flat back,
lack of mane, and the disproportion of the head. He believes the original statue was craved
before the old kingdom and portrayed the Egyptian god Anubis, with a head of a jackal and
body of a man (see figure 1). Anubis is traditionally associated with mummification and the

Imagery In Cold Blood
This excerpt from the book In Cold Blood written by Truman Capote describes a dull, lifeless
town. Holcomb stands on the high wheat plains of Kansas and considered, out there. Capote s
view of Holcomb, Kansas describes a little, insignificant town with little drama. Capote conveys
his views of Holcomb by utilizing imagery and tone. The village of Holcomb stands on the high
wheat plains of western Kansas, a lonesome area that other Kansans call out there. Some seventy
miles miles east of the Colorado border, the countryside, with its hard blue skies and desert clear
air. These exercise imagery by describing a picture for you to see in your mind. Sight, smell, touch,

The author says there is little to nothing to see and is considered out there. The first four
paragraphs sets the the tone as monotone. Capote describes the town as dull to help the reader
understand just how plain Holcomb is. Capote also says that little drama stops in Holcomb to
show just how rare drama in the area is. The first four paragraphs set the tone as dull, making you
wonder why he would write about such a dull place. Then in paragraph five the tone dramatically
changes. The tone shifts from describing the town as an old deteriorating town to something more
lively. When Capote starts speaking of the school, the tone changes and he views the town in
another light. Through Capote s eyes the town is no longer something to dread but something
extraordinary. He calls the people prosperous and explains the school as a good looking
establishment. When he talks about the school the tone is set that the people of Holcomb care
about their future. The tone shifts from a dry boring town to a great place with plentiful amounts
of money and a prosperous place to learn. In the last and final paragraph the tone shifts one last
time to something mysterious. The tone makes it clear that something bad will likely happen by
saying things such as, Until one morning in mid November of

The Three Witches Role In Macbeth Essay
The three witches play an obvious role in Macbeth, and are introduced in the very first scene. The
witches are sly and devious, using riddles to give Macbeth a false sense of security. It becomes
clear that they have insight into the future, and have fun while pushing Macbeth towards his
downfall.
Shakespeare sets forth a description of witches that still exists today in literature, Halloween
costumes, and in movies. The three witches are portrayed as evil, gross, old hags that brew
potions. The three witches are described as having beards and warts, and put odd ingredients in
their cauldron. For example, they put baboon blood in to help cool the potion. They also have
magical powers, like vanishing into thin air, which is still a common stereotype.
When Macbeth and Banquo first meet the witches, they quickly sensed that the witches were odd
and had supernatural powers. The witches told Macbeth that he is soon to be Thane of Cawdor,
and will eventually be king. Once Macbeth becomes Thane of Cawdor, he sets it in his mind that
he is supposed to be king as well. Therefore, the witches were able to plant that idea in his mind,
manipulating his actions. The witches also tell Banquo that his son will one day sit upon the
throne, but he doesn t act because of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These three prophecies show that they are not just trying to manipulate Macbeth, but they can also
see into his future. In the first prophecy about Macbeth becoming king, that could potentially
happen. However, the Weird Sisters are able to predict that Birnam Wood will come to Dunsinane
Hill, and that Macbeth will be killed by someone not born of woman. Not only does this
demonstrate that the Weird Sisters aren t just guessing Macbeth s fate, but they already know what
is going to happen. Therefore, they are not pushing Macbeth towards his downfall; they are just

Financial Aid In Higher Education Aims To Make Tuition
Financial aid in higher education aims to make tuition fees affordable. According to Ehrenberg

(enroll more students), to increase affordability (make higher education cheaper for students and
their families), and to promote equality of opportunity (make sure disadvantaged students can go to
University). The student s aid programs are also differentiated on the basis of types which are loans,

In South Africa the government established the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS)
in 1996, to enable students without financial resources can attend university, and the NSFAS
provides loans to universities students. These loans are administered by the institutions themselves
and are part of the Financial Aid Package (FAP) awarded to students on the basis of annual gross
family income and to what is known as level of need. Other criteria used by universities include
family size, the distance of the home from an institution, and the number of siblings at the
university. Loans usually cover tuition costs but in cases of extreme need, they may also cover
living costs and traveling expenses (Council on Higher Education s policy report, 2004).
2.4.3 Students Employment
In many countries especially in the USA and Europe, the students are employed while attending a
university; the jobs provided or designed by the University are considered as the student financial
aid. The student affairs officers can place students in jobs that complement their academic interest
(Dannells, 1977). Furthermore, bursaries and loans are also available from private companies and
commercial banks. For example, some companies provide contract bursaries to students and require
that after graduation the recipient work for the company or organization that made the award

Funk Carioca Research Paper
By 1989, DJ Marlboro, an essential pioneer in the genre of funk carioca music, released his first
album Funk Brasil which contained Portuguese covers of popular Miami bass songs (Filho 229).
Funk Brasil went on to be so successful that Brazilian media outlets began to report on the
explosive trajectory of funk carioca. Thus, the genre was truly became familiar to the public eye
by the early 90s (Filho 229). Popular nightclubs for middle class Brazilians began to host special
nights dedicated to funk carioca while radio stations played an active role in promoting Brazilian
funk festivals and playing recordings from baile funks across the city of Rio de Janeiro(Filho 230).
Overall, the representation of funk carioca was fairly neutral until 1992 (Filho 229). That year, a
group of young criminals known as arrastГЈos were arrested on a beach in the south side of Rio de
Raneiro. The local news carried the story and depicted images of social disorder as teenage
gangs fought amongst each other (Filho 230). As a response, funk carioca, the cultural expression
of slums and trademark of the youth from Rio de Janeiro s favelas, was highlighted in the media
as a key source to the malfeasance of the poor youth (Filho 230). The arrastГЈos at the beach were

would be far too simplistic to reduce the genre to these sole characteristics. The genre has a
legitimate significance to Brazilian youths living in favelas and is much more than laughably crude
cartoonish lyrics. The exoticization of funk carioca is particularly dangerous because it merely
presents the genre as void, vulgar music and strips Brazilian funk of its cultural significance to the

Our planet faces a lot of problems such as resources, energy supply, waste and pollution, habitats

Analysis Of The Falling Man By Tom Junod
The Falling Man
On the date of September 11th 2001, a horrific terrorist attack took place on the World Trade
center. From this one act of evil caused thousands of individuals to perish in the matter of minutes.
As time progresses on, the things that still remain are the memories and the footage of what
occurred on that day. As the two buildings were in engulfed in flames and people stood helpless on
the ground, some witnesses turned to photography and video footage to hopefully help this day to
never be forgotten.
One individual named Richard Drew, a professional journalist and photographer was in New York
on 9/11. While the terrorist attack occurred he sat helpless and watched from the streets but decided
to begin snapping pictures. However, the article entitled, The Falling Man by Tom Junod showed
the controversy of what he was taking pictures of. Richard was taking pictures of the Jumpers
(Junod, 2016, para. 6). The Jumpers were the citizens trapped within the twin towers with no other
exit but to jump for possible freedom, but as they fell hundreds of stories from the buildings the
people on the streets knew their was no help for them and the only thing that awaited them was a
quick death. Within the article it states, He was standing between a cop and an emergency
technician, and each time one of them cried, There goes another, his camera found a falling body
and followed it down for a nine or twelve shot sequence (Junod, 2016, para. 3). In this statement

History of Health Insurance Essay
Healthcare didn t always exist in the United States. Before the 1920 s, most people didn t have
health coverage. Most people were treated at home and hardly anyone, except a few large
employers offered healthcare. Everyone else paid out of pocket. As the population shifted from
rural areas to urban centers, families lived in smaller homes with less room to care for sick
family members (Faulkner 1960, p. 509). Increasing requirements for licensing and accreditation,
in addition to a rising demand for medical care, eventually led to rising costs. By the end of 1920s,
there was an increased demand for medical care and the costs of medical care increased.

Also, a lack of insurance is a huge financial burden for individuals and their families. Lack of health
insurance has social consequences, as well. Some diseases are highly contagious and can be spread
easily to family members, friends, colleagues, co workers and others, one may come in contact
with. With health insurance, these contagious diseases can be contained and cured or treated more
quickly and cost effectively. People without health insurance have limited, reduced access to
services of preventive care, like cancer screening.
Moreover, the benefits of expanding coverage outweigh the costs for added services. [4] Safety
net care from hospitals and clinics improves access to care but does not fully substitute for health
insurance. These findings are supported by much research, although some cautions are appropriate
in using these results. People with health insurance are protected against uncertain and high
medical expenses and are more likely to receive needed and appropriate health care. In addition,
having health insurance is associated with improved health outcomes and lower mortality, so
employees with health insurance are more likely to be productive workers. You do not pay income
tax on health insurance benefits so it is more valuable per dollar than the same amount in taxable
pay. [5]

Examples Of Coming Of Age Rituals In The Bronze Age
Coming of Age Rituals from Bronze Age to Present (I) Greek culture was forged in the crucible
of the Bronze Age civilization which has heavily influenced millennia of cultures to follow
(Pomeroy, Sarah B, and Rogers D. Spotswood Collection xiii). The height of the Bronze Age is
defined by an exquisite amount of creative and youthful energy, beginning around the year of 1600
BC. Prominent rituals from these cultures and era are apparent through archeological findings and
are even visible today via popular traditions and spiritual practices demonstrated in our
contemporary society. A specific category of rituals, coming of agerituals, which are defined as the
attainment of prominence, respectability, recognition, or maturity , were fundamental in the Bronze
Age and were so pivotal to their society that they continue to exist today through different forms
(Merriam Webster). Contemporary Western ceremonies for transitional periods are influenced by
Spartan and Mycenaean Bronze Age coming of age rituals. (II) The influential Spartan and
Mycenaean Bronze Age civilizations were technologically advanced for their time, however, they
still employed segregated rituals for the two different sexes. Males and females spent a significant
portion of their lives separate from each other until they reached the day of marriage. The rituals
were specifically used to mark differing poignant moments in the lives of maturing adolescents.

Greek Creation Vs Celtic Creation
In many ways the Greek creation and the Celtic creation are different. They re both different
cultures, they worship different gods, they re from different time periods. But in both stories of
creation, there is a violent overthrow that leads to the death of the previous ruler and the birth of
new gods and things.
First in these stories is the way new rulers begin their reign. In the Greek creation story, Cronus hid
in his mother s shadow until night fell and Uranus came to the sky on Earth. When Uranus was
resting Cronus sprang out of hiding and killed his father and became ruler. It is similar in Celtic
creation as well. Donn and Danu were so in love that they locked into a loving embrace and never

Gender Bias On The Classroom
Gender Bias In The Classroom Gender roles are widely accepted societal expectations about how
males and females should behave (Rathus, 2010, pg. 447). Gender roles create a difference in the
way that masculine and feminine behaviors are accepted among society. Gender roles are often
depicted as just a part of who a person is and help better define the difference between male and
female. When society begins to use these genderroles as norms we often see those who don t fit
into the correct role become ostracized by society. When these gender roles become rigid they
can become gender stereotypes. These stereotypes are fixed and oversimplified beliefs about the
way in which men and women ought to behave (Rathus, 2010, pg. 447). One of the most
common gender stereotypes is that men are the breadwinners and women are the homemakers.
These stereotypes also carry into emotions as well, women being more likely to feel sadness,
fear and sympathy, while men are more likely to feel anger and pride. Another area where gender
stereotypes can be observed is in the work place with women taking jobs such as nursing and
teaching, and men holding jobs in fields like medicine and law. (Rathus, 2010, pg. 447). There are
many physical, cognitive, personality, and behavioral differences between genders. Physically men
and women have different primary and secondary sex characteristics. The primary sex
characteristics are the organs of the reproductive system where women have ovaries and men

The Similarities Between Lucius And The Tale Of Cupid And...
Many historical and mythological accounts of Graeco Roman history in the classical period,
involved tales of magic, worship of the gods, and emphasised the value society placed on devotion
to religion. These societal beliefs and practices became evident in the literature of Greek and Roman
societies, where its use, reach, and consequences was illustrated. In the only surviving Roman novel
of the 2nd century AD, ApuleiusMetamorphoses, readers encounter a Greek nobleman, named
Lucius, whose insatiable curiosity leads him to explore magic. His over enthusiasm to intimately
experience and learn about magic, accidentally causes his transformation into an ass, causing him to
be subjected to a range of vulgar, exploitive, and lustful debaucheries on his path to become human
again.
This essay will explore how Lucius s insatiable curiosity and thirst for forbidden knowledge causes
him to become a victim of magic, and how religion delivers him from its dangerous realms. Finally,
this essay will comment on the contested approaches to interpreting the final book of the novel.

Development of NVWSI for drought monitoring The development of NVWSI was based on the
assumption that when there is sufficient vegetation water supply in the soil, there is a normal
growth of vegetation. In other words, normal vegetation growth is affected when soil water
deficit has happened during a drought period. In case of drought, NDVI value (observed by the
satellite sensor) is reduced as vegetation partially closes leaf stomata to reduce leaf surface
transpiration in order to save water in the canopy (Placeholder4). During this self protective
mechanism the leaf and canopy temperatures (LST) increase. In this modality, the ratio of
vegetation index and canopy temperature can show the state of water supply for vegetation,
with the greater ratio implying sufficient water supply and vice versa and this approach is
widely applied in drought monitoring (Sheng et al. 2003; Zhang et al, 2006; Huang et al. 2008;
Gao 2008; Bao 2012). Usually, the simple ratio of the two variables (NDVI and LST) can be
defined as VWSI using Equation (1).

owners decreased the dimensions of the fields thus increasing the odds of someone hitting a

would have never escaped. Hope is the only thing that kept Andy Dufesne going even through the

Ethical Dilemmas In The Classroom Analysis
Class Reflection There are many times in a setting where you work with other adults that
something will come into play that provides a conflict that could potentially create a clash of
ideas. Sometimes something that one person may think is the correct way to go about things,
could be wrong in the eyes of the other adult. When this conflict comes into play the two people
that come into problems with one another need to make adult decisions to come to an agreement on
the conflict that has arisen. Conflict management is about calming discussing the situation in order
to brainstorm on the problem (Watson, 2012). My paper discusses a current dilemma, ethical ideal
/principles that relate to the dilemma, as well as future approach. Ethical Dilemma The ethical
dilemma that I have come into is a case in which a director was filling into a classroom for a
teacher. Unfortunately the classroom that the director was filling in for,... Show more content on

It almost feels like this falls under ethical responsibilities to the children. The teacher should ensure
they are creating a safe, healthy, nurturing, and responsive setting for each child (Gartell, 2013). By
the parent/director allowing the child to act out, the parent/director was not putting the needs of the
other children first. I say this because, the director is teaching the other children that it is ok to act
that way. In addition, if the parent/director was treating their child differently, such as favoring, the
other children could potentially pick up on this as well. The parent/director should facilitate
cooperative and individual activities so that each child can experience success (Gartell, 2013). By
not addressing the behavior of their child, this sends mixed messages to the class. In addition, this
does not allow the children the opportunity to cope with the behavior, hence allowing for a healthy
class environment (Morrison, 2014) as the parent/director is utilizing

Benefit Of Ocean Exploration
Astonishingly, Did you know that we have better maps of the moon than we do of the ocean? It s
true! Scientists are working to make drones to explore the deep sea. Ocean Exploration is a
developing science that incorporates the use of marine biology and drone technology. Ocean
Exploration technology will be an overall benefit to society because 1. exploring the ocean is
easier than before and 2. ocean exploration can help with monitoring the deep sea.
First of all, ocean exploration technology has advanced much more than before in the past decade.
In the past, people had to bring everything needed for scuba diving which included hundreds of
pounds of gear and photographing technology. Now, all you need is the drone and an ocean.
There are many things needed for scuba diving. Such as, oxygen tanks and diving gear that also
cost lots of money. With drones, ocean exploration will be much cheaper and faster than scuba
divers ever have been. (#2) According to a journalist, Kimberly Pierceall, from Military Times,
from her article Researchers Want To Use Drones For Ocean Floor Exploration She said that,
..They (Scientists) hope (12 research drones) will survey the deepest parts of the ocean faster
and cheaper than anyone has done before (Pierceall, 2017). This evidence proves that with new
developing ocean technology, exploring will be cheaper and faster than it ever has before. This is
a benefit to society because researchers will be able to explore vast amounts of the

Education And Vocational Achievements Of A School Cohort
Introduction
People vary greatly in their educational and vocational achievements. While educational
achievement has been examined in schools and tertiary settings, it is not always the case that the
original educational and vocational achievements of a school cohort have been followed because
there are certainly many other factors that affect people s result of achievement. According to
Holland (1997, p.13), there are many characteristics of a person and an environment that influence
educational and vocational development such as the age, gender, ethnicity, geography, social class,
physical assets or liabilities, educational level attained, intelligence and influence. By comparing
and contrasting males and females, this essay will focus on gender, in terms of schooling and
vocation, and how culture and social stereotypes affect male and female educational and
occupational pathways in Australia.
Gender as a function of society and culture
Gender is a cultural and social phenomenon that refers to constructed differences between men and
women. With western feminism which encompassed Marxist, radical and liberal feminist
frameworks gender was seen to operate both as a set of cultural understandings that represents what
it means to be a man or woman, and as a social variable that structures the opportunities and
pathways that men and women are expected to follow (Vickers, 2013, p.161). This phenomenon
appears both educationally and vocationally.
Gender stereotype

George H. W Bush Research Paper
The Man, the Myth, the Legend, the 41st President of the United States: George H.W. Bush. Bush
was not just known as the man in office; he partook in multifarious careers. Before he became the
President, he joined the U.S. Navy during World War II and served eight years as the Vice
President. He also served in various positions in Congress and created his own oil company. With
all of his disparate achievements and astonishing contributions to the United States, his legacy will
forever remain in history.
On June 12, 1924, George Herbert Walker Bush was born in Milton, Massachusetts to Prescott
Sheldon Bush and Dorothy Bush. Since he was often acknowledged as the son of Senator Prescott
Bush, he was known to be a part of an opulent family. Bush s ... Show more content on

After he graduated from college, he decided to follow his father s footsteps by getting involved
with an oil business. He started off with Dresser Industries as a sales clerk in West Texas.
However, when Bush was working for Dresser, he lived in numerous places with his family. In
1951, he felt motivated to create his own business called the Bush Overbey Oil Development
Company. As two years followed, the Zapata Petroleum Corporation was co founded by him, and
he eventually gained the leadership to become President for that company in offshore drilling.
Bush became a millionaire quickly the moment he resumed his presidency of this corporation in
1964, and later on became the chairman in 1966. Little did he know, all of these successful
movements led to an opening for him in the world of politics. George H.W. Bush wasn t just a man,
myth, legend, or the 41st President of the United States. He was a contributing factor to the entire
nation. Without George H.W. Bush, there would never have been the Disabilities Act, Radiation
Exposure Compensation Act, or the reauthorization of the Clean Air Act. Bush s conservative
nature allowed the United States to avoid chaos, which helped create a peaceful nation. With all of
his positions in Congress, years as a Vice President, experience as a military aviator, owning a big
time oil production business, and more, Bush s contributions will

Greek Influence On Roman Society
Thanks to our course, it teaches me something I didn t know before. This week, what I learnt was
ancient Greek actually forged Roman society and its past glories. Apart from their historical
connections, it turned out Greek was an inspiration for Roman s outstanding achievements, to an
extent, if the proverb all roads lead to Rome presents this city state s central position in Antiquity, I
will think Roman s success owed its origin to Greek, to say the least. In my opinion, Greecewas the
true begetter of Roman empires economic and political miracles.
Although the two are both Mediterranean countries, but Greece had a major influence on the
development of Roman arts, governmental system, literature, and many more. In a way, Romans
internalized a set of Greek values which they ingeniously conflated Greek traditional charm with
Roman local idioms, then continuously built on that solid foundation and made some exciting
breakthroughs thereafter.
In addition, as Noreen Gunnell (2012) indicated, ancient Romans loved all things Greek. In the
highest form of flattery, the Romans copied Greek architecture, sculpture, and mythology...the
Roman god and myths are the Greek gods and myths...the Romans were enamored by all things
Greek... To me, it was understandable that Romans put Greek culture on a pedestal, because from

Marcion Against Gnosticism
Marcion also mimicked the church by having his own bishops and a similar system to the church.
Because of these things, the church had to recover quickly by meeting the challenge that was
created. Although the Marcion church did challenge the Christian church, its beliefs were very
similar to the Gnostic beliefs in that they believed that the Old Testament was not scripture and
should not be treated as such.
Up until the mid to late 1900 s the knowledge about Marcion and the Gnostics was only known
through the heresiologists. (Gonzales 1984, 70) Heresiologists Christian writers that argued against
Gnosticism and its tenets. In 1945 a large collection of Gnostic writings were discovered in Egypt;
they included the Gospel of Thomas and the Gospel of Truth of Valentinus, a leading Gnostic
teacher.

Jesus was fact. These faith systems that were teaching things contrary to what was known in the
scriptures were false and needed to be exposed for what they were. The belief that these other
religions were going to have a negative impact on the church at large likely caused Irenaeus to
expose the differences to protect the scriptures that he held dear. Gnostics and Marcionites had
many similar beliefs, but the Gnostics believed that their secret knowledge (knowledge that was
only available to select persons) was what provided them with salvation and left others who did
not have this knowledge to themselves and their evil ways which will lead them to the eternal
destruction. This knowledge was the source that assisted them in escaping from the prison of the

Iceland Volcano
The bias view of the filmmaker is that it concentrated on the people at the airport instead of the
actual eruption. There was only one interview which was held with an adult called Grace
Schofield who was a stranded traveller. The filmmaker s point of view is that they only considered
the lives of the people in the airport instead of people who got affected by the volcano.
However, even though they showed scenes of children at the airport their perspective wasn t
observed by the filmmaker. If the children s perspective was included younger people would get a
better realisation of how it feels to be at their state.
Another factor is that even though the volcanic eruption was held in Iceland, the filmmaker

Even though the narrator narrates that even though the delays are costing them a fortune, the
airport manager is not included. The airport manager s response would have helped understand the
amount of money which they are spending as well as the tiring work to control people at the airport.
The film was mainly built to explain the effect the volcano had on Iceland, the people around the
world as well as the airports around the world.
In this video, I have learnt that although the Eyjafjallajokull volcano was a small eruption, it
affected 23 European countries around the world due to the wind causing the volcanic ash to be
spread across europe.
Another fact that I learnt is that flying into a cloud of ash is dangerous due to the fact that if tiny
particles of rock, sand and glass get subjected to plane s engine, it is hot enough to cause the engine
to melt and solidify again.
I have learnt that Iceland is constituted in the mid atlantic region where tectonic plates meet and
cause molten rock from underneath the earth s surface to rise to the top which causes, hot mud,
geysers as well as volcanoes to

What Is Southwest Airlines Case Study
Recommendation
Over the years Southwest Airlines has steadily grew, but their growth has been highly controlled.
This highly controlled growth has allowed them to avoid the trap of growing beyond their means.
With the acquisition of AirTran Air, it accelerated Southwest Airlines entry into the international
markets. As we hold a large investment in Southwest Airlines, I believe this merger with AirTran Air
will not affect the strategy and culture of Southwest Airlines. Southwest Airlines strategy and
culture has a history of being successful as well as creating large profits for the company and its
stakeholders. I do see Southwest Airlines maintaining their laser like focus on their basic strategy,
but it will take time to fully transition Southwest Airlines strategy and culture to AirTran Air. With
this said we should retain our investment in Southwest Airlines as the company has been
consistently profitable for decades and has weathered hardships such as, the September 11 terrorist
attacks, and the 2008 2009 recession. While making my decision to retain our investment in
Southwest Airlines I analyzed Southwest Airlines performance in the U.S airlineindustry, as well as
looked at Southwest s operations, strategy/culture. The advantages to my recommendation of
retaining our investment in Southwest Airlines is that our company could see high returns for our
customers and shareholders. In addition, our investment in Southwest Airlines could increase in
size, which would

Spectrophotometric Determination of Equilibrium Constant...
DATE PERFORMED: JULY 20, 2007
SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF EQUILIBRIUM CONSTANT FOR A
REACTION
ABSTRACT
UV VIS spectrophotometry is one of the most widely used methods for determining and identifying
many inorganic species. During this experiment, this spectrophotometry was used to determine the
equilibrium constant, Keq, of the Fe3+(aq)+SCN (aq)↔ FeSCN2+(aq) reaction. By determining
the amount of light absorbed, the concentration of the colored FeSCN2+ solution was also
quantitatively determined. From that data, the concentrations of the reagents at equilibrium may
also be determined. This experiment should thus provide a Keq value without computing for the
concentration of each of the species in the reaction. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Beer s Law states that absorbance is directly proportional to the concentration c of the absorbing
species, and to the path length b of the absorbing medium by a proportionality constant called the
absorptivity a. In our experiment, we expressed the concentration of the absorbing species in terms
of mol/L and the path length in centimetres. Thus, the proportionality constant becomes the molar
absorptivity Оµ. We set the wavelength of the spectrophotometer to 447 nm so we could achieve
maximum sensitivity. At this point, the change in absorbance per unit of concentration is greatest
and there is greater adherence to Beer s Law.

The White House On Maple Street Short Story
Many say the white house on Maple Street is strange and the old people who lived there would
definitely agree. Nobody had stayed at the house for more than a year, especially since there was
something strange inside its walls. The day came when another family had bought the house. That
was the day their lives changed because there was someone already in the house. They were mad at
the other owners for it, but they couldn t sell the house because it was too late to find another house
on the market. The person had already introduced himself and invited them to stay. The familysaid
that they wanted some peace and quiet and nobody bothering them but they were wrong.

  • 2. Chapter 17 Mutual Funds and Hedge Funds Chapter 17 1. Why are mutual funds popular with individual investors? Able to enjoy economies of scale by incurring lower transaction costs and commissions. Provide opportunities for small investors to invest in a liquid and diversified portfolio of financial securities. 2. What is the purpose of index funds? How does this differ from other equity mutual funds? Why are index funds growing in popularity? Index funds are funds in which managers buy securities in proportions similar to those included in a specified major index. Index funds involve little research or management, which results in lower management fees and higher returns than actively managed funds. Actively managed funds turn over their holdings rapidly. 3. Market Reform Act of 1990 allows the SEC to introduce circuit breakers to halt trading on exchanges and restrict program trading when it is deemed necessary. National Sec Market Improvement Act 1996 exempts mutual fundcompanies from oversight by state securities regulators. 8. In what ways are hedge funds different from mutual funds? Are not subject to heavy regulation that apply to mutual funds. Do not have to disclose their activities to third parties. Because of less regulation, they use aggressive strategies that are unavailable to mutual funds. Actual data cannot be individually tracked. Self reported. They avoid regulation by limiting the number of investors to less than 100 and by requiring investors to be accredited. 9. What are the primary differences between index funds and ETFs? • 3. King David Essay As we examine the heroes of the faith outlined for us in the Old Testament, we would be hard pressed to find a more faithful man that King David. After the death of King Saul, David became the King of the Hebrew people. David, who was meek and pious, steadfastly believed in the true God and tried to do His will. He had endured much persecution from Saul and other enemies but did not become bitter, did not lift his hand against Saul, as he was the Lord s anointed, but placed all his hope in God, and the Lord delivered him from all his enemies.... When confronted by Nathan the prophet, David admitted his sin. In punishment, Bathsheba s child died and David was cursed with the promise of a rebellion from within his own house. Bathsheba and David soon conceived a second son, Solomon. Here we see David in his first major fall from grace. King David accomplished a great evil, a two fold sin. Not only did he commit adultery, but also he also sent Uriah into battle so that he would be killed. David, being blinded by his selfishness, did not notice that he had committed a great sin in the eyes of God. David s personal strife continued when his son Amnon raped Tamar, Amnon s half sister. Absalom, who was David s son and Tamar s brother, then killed Amnon. Absalom fled, but David could not stop thinking about him. Finally, Joab convinced David to allow Absalom to return. Absalom was a handsome man and became popular with the people of Israel. Then, 40 years after Samuel had anointed David king, Absalom, along with 200 men, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When Rome finally crumbled it was a devastating time, it lead to the worst time period that Europe has ever seen; full of disease and poverty. It started in 410 A.D and ended in 1200 A.D. During this time people would rather die a horrible death than to actually live through this time. Terrifying Vikings tore through the continent along with cruel Knights. It is the largest recorded empire ever known and was one of the wonders of the world. It was the center of trade and was the protector of Europe. Unfortunately, by 2006 Pastor Hornbuckle, at age 44, would be accused of drug abuse and convicted of drugging and raping three women, two of them former members of his Arlington megachurch. According to one published report, Agape lost at least 90 percent of its weekly worshippers when Rev. Hornbuckle s crimes were made public. Consistent with such a decline in attendance, another published report suggests that the church went through bankruptcy following the legal troubles and lawsuits. In fact, financial reports filed with the court showed a church struggling to stay afloat despite bankruptcy protection. In addition to losing his 2500 member congregation, Rebecca A Lopez, reporter for Texas news outlet WFAA, reports that when Renee Hornbuckle, Rev. Hornbuckle s wife, found that that her husband was convicted of all three counts and sentenced to 15 years in prison, she shut the door on that part of her life. • 7. The National Incident Management System Ever since the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon, the government took time in order to do an After Actions Review (AAR) on what occurred, what caused it, what actions were taken, and what can be done in order to correct the mistakes that took place? One of the issues that occurred was all of the agencies and private sectors failure to have a plan/template to use in case of a crisis occurring. After the Gilmore Commission put out their report on the lessons learned from September 11, 2001, in 2003, the government created the National Incident Management Systemto facilitate this issue (Walsh, 2012, p.3 4). The National Incident ManagementSystem is a systematic approach to a national template when dealing with incident management. This is how incidents are managed across all agencies to ensure protection, response time, mitigation of duties, and recovery (Walsh, 2012, p.4). In order to use the National Incident management System effectively, you must use the five major components. These components are used throughout government organizations, non government organizations, and private sectors. The five major components consist of: (1) preparedness; (2) communications and information management; (3) command and management; (4) ongoing management and maintenance; and (5) resource management (Walsh, 2012, p. 6). The first component is preparedness, which requires that the incident commander (IC) assess the situation, plan out the strategy, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Public Sphere Of The Canadian Public Since the beginning of the digital era, technological advancements have dramatically increased the capability of media and decreased the barriers that one may experience to participate in said communication. Although these advances have created several opportunities for the majority of the Canadian public to participate in communications, there are still several obstacles faced by minority groups: making participation difficult or impossible. In order to counter these barriers, the Canadian government has been taking steps to provide all Canadians with national access to communications services, catering to the needs of a few to benefit many. This is because in taking steps to provide the communication services to all Canadians increases the ability of all citizens to participate in the public sphere the internet creates. Moreover, increasing the communication services availability strengthens the ethnic identity of minority peoples in Canada, reinforcing the ideal of Canada being a Cultural Mosaic. Lastly, creating possibilities for these ethnic and cultural minorities to represent themselves in the media nationally allows for positive perceptions of these groups to be developed. Although members of the cultural majority may disagree, the actions taken by the Canadian government to provide communications services to all Canadians is a good thing as it benefits the entire country. • 13. Why Should We Be Interested In Stars Alena Calma PCS181 Birth of a Star Why should we be interested in stars? We should be interested in stars because they produce the factors such as light and energy that stirs and heats the gas and dust in space and makes life on planets like Earth possible. To be a star, an object has to have at least about one tenth the mass of the Sun. Any self gravitating cloud that attempts to become a star with less material would never develop the pressures and temperatures in its interior needed for the ignition of the nuclear processes that make stars shine. 2 Brown dwarfs/failed stars Objects that have less than one tenth of the mass of the sun exist but they cannot sustain light for too long. They start out similar to the normal stars with hydrogen fusion, helium fusion and carbon fission, but continue over to oxygen fusion, and silicon fusion. The end product of Silicon is Iron. No star can fuse Iron, it will die. How much gas and dust is collected during the star s formation determines the size and colour of the star. As time passes by, stars fight the inward pull of the force of gravity. The outward pressure created by the nuclear reactions pushing away from the star s core keeps the star whole. Gender roles are stereotypes that males and females fulfill and each of the same gender is supposed to follow by a courtesy code. The Worst Miracle Drug For Gastrointestinal Patients The Worst Miracle Drug Scientists from the Netherlands, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Italy studied Ibuprofen, which originated as an anti acidic drug for gastrointestinal patients. The purpose of the study was to assess the safety of non inflammatory drugs to treat cardiovascular disease (BMJ 2016, pg.1). Accordingly, of this study s 10 million participants, 92% had cardiovascular disease caused by painkillers, and those who stopped using Ibuprofenreduced risk of worsening cardiovascular condition. Various age ranges received different treatments. For minors, physicians lowered doses as a precautionary measure. By contrast, long term users above age seventy seven who were prescribed higher doses showed an increased risk of heart attack. Various ages, races, and sexes were tested to generalize results. Hospitalization occurred in 95% of frequent ibuprofen users. Long term usage showed destruction of the gastrointestinal tract. Ibuprofen was later found to lead to stomach ulcers. In 1802, he published his travels. The perfection given by the Egyptians to the representations of their animals proves that they were not without an idea of that bold style which expresses much character in a few lines, and their execution tended to the grave, and to ideal perfection, as we have already remarked in instance of the Sphinx. The Sphinx represents the guardian of the Giza plateau. Revered in Ancient Egypt the feline form has a long association with royalty, power and protection. An evacuation lead by French archaeologist Dr. Alain Zivie believed inscriptions suggest Egyptians bred lions as well as buried them in sacred cemeteries. In 2001, Zive and his crew found a mummified lion in the tomb of a woman understood to be the wet nurse of Pharaoh Tutankhamen dated to 1430. The wear of the lion s teeth indicate it lived to old age and was in captivity. One theorist, Robert Temple, declares the Sphinx is not a lion at all, because of the flat back, lack of mane, and the disproportion of the head. He believes the original statue was craved before the old kingdom and portrayed the Egyptian god Anubis, with a head of a jackal and body of a man (see figure 1). Anubis is traditionally associated with mummification and the afterlife. Temple believes that between 2200 2000BC, the monument was defaced then re carved during the fourth dynasty in the image of Pharaoh Khafre. He also presumes the Sphinx enclosure was flooded with Nile water to make an island. The witches are sly and devious, using riddles to give Macbeth a false sense of security. It becomes clear that they have insight into the future, and have fun while pushing Macbeth towards his downfall. Shakespeare sets forth a description of witches that still exists today in literature, Halloween costumes, and in movies. The three witches are portrayed as evil, gross, old hags that brew potions. The three witches are described as having beards and warts, and put odd ingredients in their cauldron. For example, they put baboon blood in to help cool the potion. They also have magical powers, like vanishing into thin air, which is still a common stereotype. When Macbeth and Banquo first meet the witches, they quickly sensed that the witches were odd and had supernatural powers. The witches told Macbeth that he is soon to be Thane of Cawdor, and will eventually be king. Once Macbeth becomes Thane of Cawdor, he sets it in his mind that he is supposed to be king as well. • 29. Gender Bias On The Classroom Gender Bias In The Classroom Gender roles are widely accepted societal expectations about how males and females should behave (Rathus, 2010, pg. 447). Gender roles create a difference in the way that masculine and feminine behaviors are accepted among society. Gender roles are often depicted as just a part of who a person is and help better define the difference between male and female. When society begins to use these genderroles as norms we often see those who don t fit into the correct role become ostracized by society. When these gender roles become rigid they can become gender stereotypes. These stereotypes are fixed and oversimplified beliefs about the way in which men and women ought to behave (Rathus, 2010, pg. 447). One of the most common gender stereotypes is that men are the breadwinners and women are the homemakers. These stereotypes also carry into emotions as well, women being more likely to feel sadness, fear and sympathy, while men are more likely to feel anger and pride. Another area where gender stereotypes can be observed is in the work place with women taking jobs such as nursing and teaching, and men holding jobs in fields like medicine and law. (Rathus, 2010, pg. 447). There are many physical, cognitive, personality, and behavioral differences between genders. Development of NVWSI for drought monitoring The development of NVWSI was based on the assumption that when there is sufficient vegetation water supply in the soil, there is a normal growth of vegetation. In other words, normal vegetation growth is affected when soil water deficit has happened during a drought period. In case of drought, NDVI value (observed by the satellite sensor) is reduced as vegetation partially closes leaf stomata to reduce leaf surface transpiration in order to save water in the canopy (Placeholder4). During this self protective mechanism the leaf and canopy temperatures (LST) increase. In this modality, the ratio of vegetation index and canopy temperature can show the state of water supply for vegetation, with the greater ratio implying sufficient water supply and vice versa and this approach is widely applied in drought monitoring (Sheng et al. 2003; Zhang et al, 2006; Huang et al. 2008; Gao 2008; Bao 2012). Usually, the simple ratio of the two variables (NDVI and LST) can be defined as VWSI using Equation (1). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

People put the end of the dead ball era on the 1919 season when Babe Ruth hit an unheard of 29 homeruns. People began to pack the stands to see the long ball, so owners decreased the dimensions of the fields thus increasing the odds of someone hitting a homerun. They also added rules to the pitchers against scuffing and cutting, and the balls were switched out more frequently too. Ethical Dilemmas In The Classroom Analysis Class Reflection There are many times in a setting where you work with other adults that something will come into play that provides a conflict that could potentially create a clash of ideas. Sometimes something that one person may think is the correct way to go about things, could be wrong in the eyes of the other adult. When this conflict comes into play the two people that come into problems with one another need to make adult decisions to come to an agreement on the conflict that has arisen. Conflict management is about calming discussing the situation in order to brainstorm on the problem (Watson, 2012). I say this because, the director is teaching the other children that it is ok to act that way. In addition, if the parent/director was treating their child differently, such as favoring, the other children could potentially pick up on this as well. The parent/director should facilitate cooperative and individual activities so that each child can experience success (Gartell, 2013). Ocean Exploration technology will be an overall benefit to society because 1. exploring the ocean is easier than before and 2. ocean exploration can help with monitoring the deep sea. First of all, ocean exploration technology has advanced much more than before in the past decade. In the past, people had to bring everything needed for scuba diving which included hundreds of pounds of gear and photographing technology. Now, all you need is the drone and an ocean. There are many things needed for scuba diving. Such as, oxygen tanks and diving gear that also cost lots of money. While educational achievement has been examined in schools and tertiary settings, it is not always the case that the original educational and vocational achievements of a school cohort have been followed because there are certainly many other factors that affect people s result of achievement. According to Holland (1997, p.13), there are many characteristics of a person and an environment that influence educational and vocational development such as the age, gender, ethnicity, geography, social class, physical assets or liabilities, educational level attained, intelligence and influence. By comparing and contrasting males and females, this essay will focus on gender, in terms of schooling and vocation, and how culture and social stereotypes affect male and female educational and occupational pathways in Australia. Gender as a function of society and culture Gender is a cultural and social phenomenon that refers to constructed differences between men and women. With western feminism which encompassed Marxist, radical and liberal feminist frameworks gender was seen to operate both as a set of cultural understandings that represents what it means to be a man or woman, and as a social variable that structures the opportunities and pathways that men and women are expected to follow (Vickers, 2013, p.161). This phenomenon appears both educationally and vocationally. Gender stereotype ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This week, what I learnt was ancient Greek actually forged Roman society and its past glories. Apart from their historical connections, it turned out Greek was an inspiration for Roman s outstanding achievements, to an extent, if the proverb all roads lead to Rome presents this city state s central position in Antiquity, I will think Roman s success owed its origin to Greek, to say the least. In my opinion, Greecewas the true begetter of Roman empires economic and political miracles. Although the two are both Mediterranean countries, but Greece had a major influence on the development of Roman arts, governmental system, literature, and many more. In a way, Romans internalized a set of Greek values which they ingeniously conflated Greek traditional charm with Roman local idioms, then continuously built on that solid foundation and made some exciting breakthroughs thereafter. In addition, as Noreen Gunnell (2012) indicated, ancient Romans loved all things Greek. This highly controlled growth has allowed them to avoid the trap of growing beyond their means. With the acquisition of AirTran Air, it accelerated Southwest Airlines entry into the international markets. As we hold a large investment in Southwest Airlines, I believe this merger with AirTran Air will not affect the strategy and culture of Southwest Airlines. Southwest Airlines strategy and culture has a history of being successful as well as creating large profits for the company and its stakeholders. I do see Southwest Airlines maintaining their laser like focus on their basic strategy, but it will take time to fully transition Southwest Airlines strategy and culture to AirTran Air. With this said we should retain our investment in Southwest Airlines as the company has been consistently profitable for decades and has weathered hardships such as, the September 11 terrorist attacks, and the 2008 2009 recession. While making my decision to retain our investment in Southwest Airlines I analyzed Southwest Airlines performance in the U.S airlineindustry, as well as looked at Southwest s operations, strategy/culture. DATE PERFORMED: JULY 20, 2007 SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF EQUILIBRIUM CONSTANT FOR A REACTION ABSTRACT UV VIS spectrophotometry is one of the most widely used methods for determining and identifying many inorganic species. During this experiment, this spectrophotometry was used to determine the equilibrium constant, Keq, of the Fe3+(aq)+SCN (aq)↔ FeSCN2+(aq) reaction. By determining the amount of light absorbed, the concentration of the colored FeSCN2+ solution was also quantitatively determined. From that data, the concentrations of the reagents at equilibrium may also be determined. This experiment should thus provide a Keq value without computing for the concentration of each of the species in the reaction. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Beer s Law states that absorbance is directly proportional to the concentration c of the absorbing species, and to the path length b of the absorbing medium by a proportionality constant called the absorptivity a. In our experiment, we expressed the concentration of the absorbing species in terms of mol/L and the path length in centimetres. Thus, the proportionality constant becomes the molar absorptivity Оµ. We set the wavelength of the spectrophotometer to 447 nm so we could achieve maximum sensitivity. At this point, the change in absorbance per unit of concentration is greatest and there is greater adherence to Beer s Law. Table I.
