A study by Duke University's sociology department found several factors that greatly contribute to emotional and mental stability. These include forgiving others and ridding yourself of resentment, living in the present and not dwelling on past mistakes, accepting conditions you cannot change and cooperating with life, staying involved with the living world instead of withdrawing during stress, refusing self-pity and accepting that no one avoids all sorrow, cultivating virtues like love and loyalty, having reasonable expectations of yourself, and finding something larger than yourself to believe in rather than focusing only on yourself.
