I have to warn you that the readings contain details of terrible physical abuse.
I read the first article in the Tacoma News Tribune in 2007 when it was originally printed. I remember exactly where I was when I read that article. I was a BRAND NEW social worker (like really, really new, like was in training but hadn't been assigned cases yet). I was so scared that I would miss something and that a child could be harmed to this extent. I was frustrated with the system that I'd only been working at for a few weeks. I was terrified that someone would do this to a child. Five years later I saw two children whose abuser had gone to similar lengths to torture them.
Recently I read another article (Child Torture as a Form of Child Abuse by Barbara L. Knox, Suzanne P. Starling, Kenneth W. Feldman**, Nancy D. Kellogg, Lori D. Frasier & Suzanna (**Dr. Feldman is a well known child abuse specialist at Seattle Children's Hospital) that described over 25 cases of child abuse that the authors felt reached the definition of child torture. " The children in this case series suffered a severe combined type of child abuse including extreme physical and psychological
maltreatment
). Torture goes beyond simple
polyvictimization in that it includes an increased severity ofboth physical and psychological maltreatment. It involves
intense humiliation and terrorization (Finkelhor et al.
2011
). What surprised me was that in each case there was a FEMALE caregiver present in the home who was either part of the torture of the child or stood by while it happened. This SHOCKED me to no end.

General Motors wanted to expand its facility, but when the company offered to purchase the property it needed, the owners would not accept the offers. The firm then approached the Detroit Economic Development Corporation with a request that the corporation use its power of eminent domain to acquire a large parcel of land on which members of the plaintiff organization, Poletown Neighborhood Council, resided and had small businesses. Once the corporation had acquired the land, it would be conveyed to General Motors for its plant expansion. The justification for the use of eminent domain was the creation of jobs for the economically depressed area.
The plaintiffs, who did not want their community destroyed, sued the city and the development corporation on the grounds that they were abusing their power of eminent domain to take private property for a private use.

Tom Harris and Jake Carson had been sports and political leaders and rivals ever since high school. They competed on the same sports teams and were of equal physical ability. Taneka, a 17-year-old African-American female, is a high school junior. She is the oldest of three siblings living with her single-parent mother. Her mother has worked for the past 15 years at a manufacturing plant. Her father has not been a part of Taneka's life.
As the oldest child, Taneka has held major responsibilities throughout her life to support her working mother, such as caring for her younger siblings: Derrick, now age 14, and Kenya, age 12. These early duties reinforced development of her natural leadership skills. Taneka has been recognized from an early age for being mature, responsible, and dependable. As her siblings have grown, she has been able to have part-time jobs, most recently as a salesperson at a teen fashion store in the local mall. This has caused Taneka to start thinking about post-secondary education possibilities. This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or

As the oldest child, Taneka has held major responsibilities throughout her life to support her working mother, such as caring for her younger siblings: Derrick, now age 14, and Kenya, age 12. These early duties reinforced development of her natural leadership skills. Taneka has been recognized from an early age for being mature, responsible, and dependable. As her siblings have grown, she has been able to have part-time jobs, most recently as a salesperson at a teen fashion store in the local mall. It was here that she first realized she had a knack for dealing with people, and they responded well to her—employers, co-workers, and customers alike. She was recently approached by her supervisor to consider participating in the company's employee leadership training program.
This has caused Taneka to start thinking about post-secondary education possibilities. Previously she had thought college was out of her reach, due to the limited financial resources of her family and no history of anyone in her family ever attending college. As such, she had not previously given much importance to her grades. Rather than participating in extracurricular school activities, she focused on working. She is on track for graduating with her class next year and has a current grade point average of 2.05.

Remember, philosophy requires us to examine and even question our beliefs. If you find yourself more persuaded by the other points of view, don’t despair! harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic Imperative
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable.
