Gene therapy is showing promise for treating certain genetic diseases. A new study found that using a partially inactivated lentivirus to deliver gene therapy for Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome reduced the risk of cancer compared to previous treatments using retroviruses. Additionally, researchers were able to cure Sanfilippo Syndrome type A in mouse and dog models through a single injection of an adenoassociated viral vector into the cerebrospinal fluid to restore the missing enzyme activity. While more testing is needed, these results provide hope that gene therapy may provide a cure for these currently incurable genetic diseases.
