Over 86 million Americans have prediabetes, but less than 10% know they are at risk. This new initiative will expand screening and refer more people to diabetes prevention programs. It provides tools for doctors to screen and refer patients to local programs. The goal is to help people make lifestyle changes to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes through increased physical activity and healthy eating.Small family norm and its importance

It notes that India's fertility rate has declined from 6.4 in 1950 to a target of 2.3 by 2000 due to family planning programs. Over 400,000 women have participated, with 95% achieving stable incomes and 98% accumulating savings. In Indonesia, healthcare teams are stationed in remote islands to address maternal health needs and ensure universal access to care. They work with communities to improve education, nutrition, sanitation and address myths that hinder women's healthcare. In Afghanistan, the number of girls in school has nearly doubled since 2002 due to new schools and teachers being established with help from USAID, though girls still face barriers to education from cultural norms.

As of 2010, Detroit Michigan has a total population of 688,701 people. Of the 688,701 people, 10.6 % are White American and 82.7% are Black American. The community of Detroit is dealing with a rising concern with maternal health and pregnancy related mortality rates. Of the total population, 52.7% (or 362,945) are women. The cause of mortality among maternal mothers is obstetric causes, medical, accidents, suicide, assaults, and other causes. Per year on average, 6 women die from pregnancy issues, this amount is three times higher than that of the national average. These high mortality rates are more common in African American women than other races. Pregnancy related deaths among African Americans is 50.8 per 100,000 live births. This makes Detroit Michigan the third highest city of pregnancy related mortality in the nation. The high mortality rates in Detroit are due to health conditions, poverty, and proper health care. These numbers show that it is dangerous for a pregnant women to live and give birth in Detroit.

Thesis
The health disparities among women and children in Detroit are some of the worst in the nation. “The maternal mortality rate for black mothers in 2002 was almost 25 deaths per 100,000 live births, compared to nearly 6 deaths per 100,000 live births among white mothers and more than 7 deaths…among Hispanic mothers” (National Institute of Health, 2006, p.x). That is nearly four times the national average. More focus needs to be placed on maternal and child health in low socio-economic areas of Detroit.

Diabetes Prevention - Catholic Charities of Corpus Christi

- 26. Akyra and De’Jah Akyra and De’Jah Akyra, 19, delivered her daughter De’Jah on July 21, 2010. Born at only 24 weeks gestation, De’Jah was 1 lb., 9 oz. De’Jah had significant medical challenges and was referred to several specialists. Throughout Akyra enrollment in MO.M.S., De’Jah’s growth has been tracked and her health has steadily improved according to pediatrician reports. Although there was initial concern that De’Jah would suffer hearing loss, Akyra reports that De’Jah has now passed all of her hearing screenings. In addition, Akyra has returned to school to complete her college education in Secondary Education through an online program. De’Jah will celebrate her first birthday this summer.
- 27. Tanika and Tyreke Tanika and Tyreke Tanika, 30, a mother of two, delivered her infant son Tyreke on Aug. 28, 2010. Tyreke was born at 27 weeks gestation. Upon release from the hospital, Tyreke was sent home with an apnea monitor and oxygen along with several recommendations for medical follow-ups. Through enrollment in the MOMS program, Tanika, along with her husband D’mitri, have worked diligently to keep Tyreke up-to-date with all doctor’s appointments and evaluations. They have also participated in regular educational dialogues regarding infant safety and development. Today, Tyreke breathes independently without supplemental oxygen, no longer uses the apnea monitor, and has avoided other complications common to infants born prematurely. In the fall, Tyreke will celebrate his first birthday.
- 28. Rachandra and Dylan Rachandra and Dylan Rachandra, 34, enrolled in the MOMS program in July 2010. What appeared to be a perfectly normal pregnancy was interrupted when her son Dylan was born at 26 weeks gestation. As a result, Dylan entered the world at 2 lbs., 1.6 oz. and suffered cardiac arrest while waiting to be transported to the neonatal unit, where he spent 4.5 months in the NICU. Dylan has survived preterm labor, surgery, pneumonia, developmental problems, and feeding challenges. However, he has overcome the odds of infant mortality in Clayton County, turning one-year old on Oct. 29, 2010. He is truly a miracle baby and is proof that no one should ever give up hope.
