IGNEOUS, in association with the
QUT Creative Industries Precinct Digital Associates Program,
presents
FLUIDATA is an immersive explorable installation with durational performances by Igneous,
a Brisbane-based intermedia & performance company. The work explores questions around the state
of Queensland creeks, the ways in which digital media can help connect audiences with the natural
environment and anecdotes about local waterways.
Igneous are the co-founders of Waterwheel, a globally successful online platform dedicated to the
awareness, celebration, care and accessibility of water everywhere. Having instigated and partaken
in international collaborations between artists, scientists and activists for more than three years,
the team have now decided to go local.
For the development of FLUIDATA, Igneous artists James Cunningham and Suzon Fuks drove 7000 km,
crossed 663 waterways, and slowly, quietly walked down two dozen creeks throughout Queensland.
Commenting on their journey, the artists say:
“We recorded impressive characters recounting extremes of drought and flood—and some
expressed concerns over mining, CSG fracking and the degradation of aquifers. We conducted five
workshops in different towns, utilising a range of performance and digital media processes, and
nearby waterways. We used performance techniques to draw awareness to our connection with
our environment – evoking a sense of wonder and also wondering in what exists, even in our own
backyards.”
From the digital media collected, the artists have created stunning imagery within a multi-layered
soundscape, teaming up with Inkahoots, the designer-programmers behind Waterwheel, and
Matthew Davis, an emerging young interactive programmer.
Fuks and Cunningham continue:
“Visitors to the installation will be able to interact with the media creating a unique experience for
themselves and for those around them. They will be invited to reflect on notions of deep time,
presence, and metaphors relating to the straight line and the meander.”
Visitors can individually explore the collection of media on computers set up in an anteroom, and in
another, they can take in a myriad of visual and sonic textures of freshwater, whilst lying down.
Live performances will be streamed online linking the Igneous artists, in Brisbane, and Bonemap, through
New Moves Network at the Centre of Contemporary Arts Cairns, to online audiences around the world.

3. THE FLUIDATA TEAM is driven by Igneous co-directors Suzon Fuks (project leader, media artist - former Australia
Council Fellow and Waterwheel initiator & co-founder) and James Cunningham (project leader - internationally presented
multi-format performer), with collaborators Matthew Davis (Max/MSP programmer, sound designer), and Inkahoots (design
- interface designers of Waterwheel, named one of the world’s 100 best designers of visual communication).
JAMES CUNNINGHAM is a performance, movement and video artist. He graduated in Dance Performance from the Centre for
the Performing Arts, Adelaide, in 88. He identifies as having disability, resulting from a motorbike accident in 1992.

Fellowship in USA (12); an Australian Choreographic Centre Fellowship (06); and an Asialink Residency in South India (99).
SUZON FUKS is an inter-media artist exploring the integration and interaction of the body and moving image through
performance, screen, installation and online work. During her Australia Council for the Arts Fellowship (09-12), she initiated
Waterwheel, a collaborative online venue about water, nominated in 2013 for international Ars Electronica Award for Digital
Communities. http://water-wheel.net. Multi-award-winner, she was born in Brussels, where she trained in dance, theatre and
