Muizenberg Festival_Case Statement(2) 2
1. Muizenberg Festival is calling for investment to support this exceptional example of a community
working together.
Muizenberg is a creative, collaborative, transformative and resourceful community.
We live in a complex world where we need to engage with challenges with inter-related social,
ecological and economical dimensions. Added to this complexity is the speed of change that
we experience in our everyday lives. Unless we start doing things differently, the solutions that we
develop today may become our challenges in the future.
This pushes us to look for a new way of engaging with the problem at hand and the people affected,
to collectively design and implement sustainable solutions and create more resilient systems.
Muizenberg has its own culture, its own rhythm, and a dynamic way of looking at its challenges as
opportunities to evolve and grow.
The Muizenberg Festival is a community created celebration to showcase our achievements, and
collective aspirations as a community. It celebrates the people, businesses, organizations, projects
and perspectives working together towards sustainability through our diversity.
The concept for this festival has grown out of four previous festivals in 2009 and 2010 where
the community was invited to collaborate with the themes of creativity, community and eco-
awareness. These festivals were so well supported; it has given us the confidence to upscale the
concept for 2014. This year the festival has been recognized as one of the official Cape Town
World Design Capital projects (#WDC244).
The festival values the individual contribution that community members offer and the importance
of creating an inclusive environment. We believe this builds mutual understanding and respect
between residents, stakeholders, business, research institutes and the municipality. This leads
to building strong multi-disciplinary and multi-sectorial collaborations, which in turn creates an
empowering environment to co-design the future urban setting of Muizenberg. This will stimulate
the local tourism industry as Muizenberg becomes an international focal point of innovation,
culture and ecological design.
10 - 12 OCTOBER
2014
2. One of the ways we do this is by creating opportunities for the community to engage. Since May
2013 we have hosted 5 large community meetings, 5 workshops, 2 presentations, 1 project open
day at the Muizenberg Pavilion, two celebration parties and the launch of our new hub space in
Muizenberg Village in Palmer Road.
These gatherings were facilitated to create a participatory platform for the co-design of the
festival concept and its organizational structure. It also assisted the community to connect,
collaborate and develop individual/group ideas and projects in alignment with the spirit of the
festival.
PROJECTS
The projects have a focus on long-term sustainability and urban design that the festival will
celebrate during its big event on the 11th and 12th October. Anyone from the community can
register a project to the festival website.
Muizenberg has always been a community full of creatives, go-getters thinkers, and doers; people
who make things happen for themselves. The Muizenberg Festival provides a platform for the
community to build stronger networks and support systems in order to create a more effective
way of working together.

Parallel Lives is a graphic
storytelling project that
incorporates participating
youth from disparate suburbs
and communities into a
series of workshops and
collaborative creativity that
culminates in an exhibition
for the October festival. The
project will bring distinct youths
into contact; and express a
collective story that melds
the participating youths’
experiences of Cape Town.
The ‘Made in Muizenberg’ co-
op shop is where our creative
community are encouraged
to use the space to showcase
their products and skills -
a space where we can
connect, market, promote,
encourage, collaborate and
guide. ‘Made in Muizenberg’
is an initiative that was born
out of the festival process and
shares a base with the festival
office at 36 Palmer Road.
There are also market events
happening through the year.
This project showcases the
rich and diverse heartbeat
of Muizenberg. It invites the
community to get involved
by contributing words,
photographs, illustrations,
paintings, history... anything
really. These are then
collaged into a series of
postcards with the intention
of celebrating the many
positive aspects of living,
visiting and being in
Muizenberg. [This is a Festival
Fundraiser project.]
Open Streets seeks to build
shared places that embody
respect for all and help
bridge the social and spatial
divides. They aim to raise
citizen awareness, foster
public debate about public
streets and engage everyone
in redesigning and re-working
streets.

In addition to projects, there are many conversations taking
place between individuals, organisations, businesses and the
municipality looking at conservation, urban gardening, solar
energy, recycling and general collaborations to develop
Muizenberg’s combined potential and sustainability.
4. DOCUMENTATION
The Festival aims to document and research the entire festival process so that it can be applied to
other areas of Cape Town or other cities in the world. We currently have interest from the academy
of Leisure at the NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences, Netherlands, who will be sending interns
to conduct their field assignments, and are expecting more interest from other global contacts.
MOBILISATION
Thus far, thanks to the amazing contributions and enthusiasm for the festival, the community has
managed to mobilize the equivalent of more than R415 000 in time, skills and investment. This has
allowed the Muizenberg Festival to become a recognized project of the World Design Capital 2014,
we have set up an interactive website and timeline for the festival projects to map their events, we
have developed a growing community database, and designed an interactive structure for the
festivals organization and we have opened a festival hub space for community members to share,
discuss and plan ideas.
The next stage of our journey is to further support community projects and
co-ordinate a fabulous festival for the month of October.
Let’s work together for a bold shared vision that honours Muizenberg for all that it has been and
imagineers sustainable home grown possibilities for the future.
Below are areas that both the festival organization and each project will need to engage with. This
is an invitation is for people to sign up and be part of making the festival happen. These different
areas offer a holding structure for all the exciting projects being developed and logged onto the
website. Representatives from task teams form a festival working group who meet regularly to move
things forward.
