d FParallax was a collective formed in 2009 by artists and curators working as invigilators at the Venice Biennale to foster professional development and international collaboration. It organized discussions, presentations and creative projects in Venice and later held events in other locations to expand its international network of art professionals and promote skill sharing across boundaries.

Creating The Gates took over 20 years to gain approval and involved extensive community outreach. When installed, it covered 23 miles of walkways and engaged over 600 workers. Visitors were able to experience the work by walking through the fabric panels and taking away fabric swatches. The interactive nature of walking through The Gates allowed participants to personally interpret and find meaning in the artwork.

Co-Creating Craft 2014 - heritage as a site for innovation
The work on display here is the outcome of an international research project led by Falmouth University and Craftspace with Birmingham based partners; The Wesleyan Community Care Project and Soho House Museum in Handsworth and Dublin based partners Bealtaine Festival, Dublin Castle and the Office of Public Works.
The project is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council through its Connected Communities Programme.
Research Questions
How does learning through craft, sharing, making and reflecting develop skills and creativity?
How can people work purposefully and enjoyably in the second half of life?
How can we create a sense of opportunity about the second half of life - to take stock, reskill, plan ahead, connect with others and live more healthily.
The project
Community participants aged 50+ in Birmingham and Dublin conducted a creative and skills exchange using online tools like skype. Each group used a heritage building, Soho House Museum and Dublin Castle, and their associated histories and collections as inspirational starting points.
Designer Maker Natalie Cole facilitated 8 creative sessions. We wanted to explore the potential for participants to craft together for pleasure and well-being, as well as making to sell as a social enterprise.
The Process
The Birmingham and Dublin groups began with a visit to Soho House Museum and Dublin Castle recording them through photographs and drawings. They then selected a motif, shape, pattern or theme from which to develop designs.
They combined hand making with cutting edge digital technology. Participants collaborated with Makernow a community digital fabrication lab at Falmouth University. Their drawings were made into digital files and sent to the lab and produced into components through laser cutting and digital milling machines.
For most participants, this project has enabled them to become digitally aware for the first time. They now have some knowledge of computer aided design and the possibilities of creating new tools, for example blocks for printing as well as components for products.

Milestone Architecture organized an exhibition titled "Ancient Presence, Modern Projection: Torcello-Venice, Italy" that immersed visitors in a contemporary experience of Byzantine structures on Torcello island. The exhibition included installations in New York and Venice connected through live video feeds. It interpreted the structures' relationship to architecture through physical objects, light projections, and interactive software. The exhibition and its website utilized human-centered design and various presentation methods to make the experience accessible to all visitors.

Shaping Networks, Shaped by Networks. Collaborative strategies for the perfor...
This talk deals with European experiences with collective strategies for the development of the performing arts, with a focus on Flanders. In the 1980’s, international networks and platforms for (co)production and presentation were set up (e.g. IETM). In the case of Flanders, this coincided with diverse domestic strategies: a.o. the emergence of artists collectives, a touring circuit, an advocacy organisation,… In a time when government support for contemporary performing arts was absent, the interplay of these strategies resulted not only in Flemish artists being launched on international platforms. It also lead to the development of an innovative Flemish funding system. It enabled artists, companies and producing houses to develop their work and to fully engage in a transnational networks for (co-)production and presentation.
This way of working has resulted in growth: more productions, in more venues and countries all around the world. There are, however, downsides to the story. With government spending under pressure throughout Europe, producers are being forced to rely on an ever growing number of increasingly vulnerable partners. The position of individual artists in this network has become precarious. How sustainable is this growth in the longer term? Are the limits of the transnational co-production and distribution model in sight? How can we re-think our current working models?

Miami, April 1, 2015 – The Miami Dade College (MDC) Museum of Art + Design and the CINTAS Foundation have announced the ongoing 2015-2016 CINTAS Knight Foundation Award in Visual Arts.
All submission materials must be received by Wednesday, July 1, 2015.
Marking its 51st year, the one-of-a-kind competition serves as a platform to promote and support visual artists, writers, architects and composers of Cuban descent from across the globe. The Collection has grown to be one of the largest bodies of Cuban art outside of Cuba and continues to grow each year with each new fellow.
“CINTAS Fellows are found represented in all major museums, as well as in important private and corporate collections throughout the world,” said CINTAS Foundation Board President Hortensia E. Sampedro.
In addition to supporting Cuban artists, many early in their careers, the CINTAS Foundation also maintains a growing collection of works by past awardees and other esteemed Cuban artists.
Past Visual Arts Fellows include:
Guillermo Calzadilla, in collaboration with the artist Jennifer Allora, produce community collaborations, instllatins, photograpy and sculptural work. Allora and Calzadilla represented the United States in the 2011 venice Biennale.
Carmen Herrera was one of Cuba’s first abstract painters. Herrera has exhibited widely in various solo and group shows, including the Outside Cuba exhibition. Herrera's pieces are in many museums and collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Tate Modern in London; the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C.; El Museo del Barrio in New York; and Havana's Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes. She is the winner of a Creative Artists Public Service Award (CAPS) in New York.
The late Félix Gonzáles Torres represented the USA in the 52nd Venice Biennale. He also had solo exhibitions at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York; the Brooklyn Museum; the Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Museum in Progress in Vienna; the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C.; and the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
The late Carlos Alfonso was represented in the Outside Cuba exhibition and the Cuba-USA: The First Generation traveling exhibition. He has also been the subject of several solo exhibitions in institutions such as the Pérez Art Museum Miami, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in North Carolina, the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach and the Hal Bromm Gallery in New York.
Teresita Fernández has had solo exhibitions at Castello di Rivoli in Italy, the Masataka Hayakawa Gallery in Japan, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., Deitch Projects in New York and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Miami. She was also appointed by President Barack Obama to serve on the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts.

2016 ICEE Conference Final Programme

Carmen Herrera was one of Cuba’s first abstract painters. Herrera has exhibited widely in various solo and group shows, including the Outside Cuba exhibition. Herrera's pieces are in many museums and collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Tate Modern in London; the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C.; El Museo del Barrio in New York; and Havana's Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes. She is the winner of a Creative Artists Public Service Award (CAPS) in New York.
The late Félix Gonzáles Torres represented the USA in the 52nd Venice Biennale. He also had solo exhibitions at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York; the Brooklyn Museum; the Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Museum in Progress in Vienna; the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C.; and the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
The late Carlos Alfonso was represented in the Outside Cuba exhibition and the Cuba-USA: The First Generation traveling exhibition. He has also been the subject of several solo exhibitions in institutions such as the Pérez Art Museum Miami, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in North Carolina, the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach and the Hal Bromm Gallery in New York.
Teresita Fernández has had solo exhibitions at Castello di Rivoli in Italy, the Masataka Hayakawa Gallery in Japan, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., Deitch Projects in New York and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Miami. She was also appointed by President Barack Obama to serve on the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts.

"Does Foreign Direct Investment Negatively Affect Preservation of Culture in the Global South? Case Studies in Thailand and Cambodia."
Do elements of globalization, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), negatively affect the ability of countries in the Global South to preserve their culture? This research aims to answer this question by employing a cross-sectional comparative case study analysis utilizing methods of difference. Thailand and Cambodia are compared as they are in the same region and have a similar culture. The metric of difference between Thailand and Cambodia is their ability to preserve their culture. This ability is operationalized by their respective attitudes towards FDI; Thailand imposes stringent regulations and limitations on FDI while Cambodia does not hesitate to accept most FDI and imposes fewer limitations. The evidence from this study suggests that FDI from globally influential countries with high gross domestic products (GDPs) (e.g. China, U.S.) challenges the ability of countries with lower GDPs (e.g. Cambodia) to protect their culture. Furthermore, the ability, or lack thereof, of the receiving countries to protect their culture is amplified by the existence and implementation of restrictive FDI policies imposed by their governments.
My study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, inspired this research topic as I noticed how globalization is changing the culture of its people. I learned their language and way of life which helped me understand the beauty and importance of cultural preservation.
