I did my modern masterpiece on Winslow Homer, and I recreated his piece The Blue Boat.
Winslow created many beautiful oil paintings that were focused around America, and he was able
to create some of the most realistic paintings for his time. In his artwork he painted people, nature,

When I first picked up the book for Winslow, I didn t expect to be inspired by his work. Yet,
besides other artists his artwork stuck out to me, mainly the ones water related. I decided to
choose The Blue Boat, as my modern masterpiece because I felt that it was a combination of his
drawings including people, as well as his drawings of nature and the sea. It was a balance between
the types of artwork he created, and my interest in the sea. When I first brought in the my sketch I
thought of using paint, but seeing that Winslow did use watercolor at one point, I decided to go
with that. In the drawing I was going for a more dystopian feel, so i didn t want to dilute the blue
too much. I kept a dark tone to the piece and created a contrast between the dark colors of the top
of the page, and the light colors of the bottom of the page. To modernize the piece I added
buildings, smoke stacks and a Mcdonald s sign to the background. The piece shows what could
happen if pollution gets out of hand, murky lakes and smoke filled skies. In the piece I replaced
the trees with buildings, and with the buildings I tried to create a visual equilibrium between the

Tom experienced a manic episode followed by depression when he was eighteen years old. He

James Farmer, 19
James Farmer was one of the Big Four of the civil rights movement era of the nineteen hundreds,
he called for racial harmony through non violence. James Farmer helped shape civil rights
movements with his use of non violent protest and activism. This non violence led to popular
support for the civil rights and voting rights acts that would be passed in 1964. James Farmer s
stand for racial harmony and nonviolence, led to freedom rides, sit ins, and the founding of CORE
(Congress of Racial Equality). He used many different mediums for his (stand taking) throughout
his (career), of which include: Congress of Racial Equality, the NAACP (National Association for
the Advancement of Colored People), and other labor and civil rights groups.
In the early 20th century it was commonplace for African Americans to be segregated from
(Whites) in the United States of America. Separate seats in buses, different waiting rooms in
doctors offices, separate entrances, and it was even illegal in Missouri for people to make
arguments or suggestions in favor of social equalities or of interracial between whites and Negroes
