Situation analysis of the 2010 floods in Pakistan presented by Naseer Ahmad G...Global Water Partnership
While Pakistan endures one of the country’s most devastating floods—possibly its worst ever—GWP Pakistan is joining with others to help provide relief and rehabilitation to remote communities that have been particularly hard-hit. In addition, the GWP Partner Hisaar Foundation and the Karachi Water Partnership, has launched an appeal to raise Rs 10 million for immediate flood relief, largely for the provision of safe drinking water.
Recognizing the scale of this disaster, GWP has invited the Pakistan delegation to the annual GWP Consulting Partners Meeting to present information on “Integrated Flood Management: analysis of the devastating floods, early recovery and rehabilitation plans” on September 3 in Stockholm, Sweden. The special session will be presented by the chair of GWP South Asia, Sardar Muhammad Tariq, the chair of GWP Pakistan, Naseer Ahmad Gillani, and the Ambassador of Pakistan to Sweden, Nadeem Riyaz. The floods have highlighted the need to place water resources management at the forefront of national development policy.
As part of its response to the floods, GWP Pakistan in collaboration with its Area Water Partnerships will assist in rehabilitation and resettlement, restoration of jobs, and sowing of new crops. The activities planned include:
1. Prepare an early recovery plan
2. Provide hygiene education to the volunteers
3. Identify and rescue flood affected poor people
4. Provide treatment to critical cases
5. Provide tents, water coolers, chlorinating tablets, sleeping rugs, etc.
6. Distribute printed material for prevention of health problems
7. Provide basic sanitation facilities on communal use basis
The Integrated Rural Development Organization of Islamabad, a GWP partner, will monitor and evaluate the activities.
The chair of the Hisaar Foundation, Simi Kamal (former member of the GWP Technical Committee), wrote that in addition to the Rs 10 million appeal, the Foundation is working on a concept of “total water solution” stretching from relief through rehabilitation to post-flood normalcy, and water needs in each of these phases. More information can be found at www.hisaar.org and .www.karachiwaterpartnership.org.

Open Defecation in India- A serious issuePradyumna
The serious prevailing issue in India- Open Defecation. People are defecating at outskirts of their villages and while traveling through villages, one can feel the bad odour surrounding there. The open defecation causes soil pollution and there-by, when washed away with water, causes water pollution. Government of India started many campaigns, one among them is "Swachch Bharat Abhiyan" in order to reduce open defecation. People are committing dark crimes on women when they are out for defecating. People should be aware of the ill effects to the environment due to Open Defecation.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

1. Flood in Pakistan
The 2010 Pakistan floods began in July 2010 following heavy monsoon
rains in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan regions of
Pakistan. While tens of hundreds of people have been killed, millions have
been displaced, and a quarter million homes are thought to be damaged or
destroyed. The Pakistan Meteorological Department said that over 200mm
(7.88 inches) of rain fell over a 24-hours period over a number of places of
Khyper Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab.
Floods have submerged 17 million acres (69,000 km) of Pakistan’s most
fertile crop land, have killed 200,000 herd of lives livestock and have
washed away massive amounts of grain.
Muzaffargarh is a town in southwestern Punjab, located on the one bank of
the Chenab River and on the other bank is Multan city. Muzaffargarh is the
neighboring town of Multan city. In this severe flooding in Pakistan summer
of 2010, was especially hard-hit, given its position between the Chenab and
Indus River.
Due to this flood up to 3.5 million children are at high risk of deadly water
borne diseases, such as Gastroenteritis, Diarrhea, and skin diseases due to
lack of clean drinking water and sanitation can pose a serious new risk to
flood victims.
After flood due to standing water there is a rapid production of mosquitoes,
abdominal disease, fever, malaria and skin diseases.
2. All schools of Punjab province have been closed due summer vacation. So,
the Government of Punjab, decided that all schools buildings should be used
as a temporary camp for flood victims (IDPs) and also give them shelter foe
few weeks.
Faisal Public School also takes part in this effort. So, from Muzaffargarh
which is only 30 km far from Multan city. Some Women and children came
to stay in Faisal Public School.
3. The management of Faisal Public School hosted the IDPS and gave them
facility of doctor, first aid, food and try to educate them about sanitation and
health awareness.
4. The teacher of Faisal Public School Babar Maqbool Khan welcome them
in the school and came to know about the problems which they are facing.
First of all one of their major problem is food. So, we provide them food.
5. SODIS METHOD
Solar water disinfection - the SODIS method - is a simple procedure to disinfect
drinking water. Contaminated water is filled in a transparent PET-bottle or glass
bottle and exposed to the sun for 6 hours. During this time, the UV-radiation of
the sun kills diarrhoea generating pathogens. The SODIS-method helps to
prevent diarrhoea and thereby is saving lives of people. This is urgently
necessary as still more than 4000 children die every day from the consequences
of diarrhoea.
SODIS (abbreviation of Solar Water Disinfection) is an initiative of Eawag. We
facilitate the dissemination of the SODIS-method in developing countries.
Thereby people in the south get access to safe drinking water and can improve
their health in the long term.

6. Then Babar Maqbool Khan told them about that how they could get safe
drinking water without any equipment. They can get safe drinking water
from SODIS Method. Then Mr. Babar Maqbool Khan showed them
practically, this method.
7. Faisal Public School also arranged a Doctor’s visit. Dr. Farrhat also told
them the importance of cleanliness and sanitation because most of diseases
are spreading due to unhygienic. We also provide them soap. Then doctor
checked one by one all the IDPS.
8. After this Mr. Babar Maqbool Khan provide children some pencils and
books. So, that they can spend their time in studying books.
There is young lady a having a cell phone. So we also included her in our
m-Health SMS Service.
We tried our best to help the flood victims personally and also tried to
mobilize the local community to support these people. Best they need is
more and more attention by the society to recover.
