This document provides guidance for the second phase proposal of the ESA Flagship program. SABAP2 progress by two year intervals
SABAP2 (http://sabap2.adu.org.za) is the most important bird conservation research project in southern Africa. If you don't know the distributions of birds, and how they are changing, you cannot effectively do conservation intelligently. SABAP2 is monitoring the distributions of bird species across southern Africa. This slideshow demonstrates what the citizen scientists who contribute their observations to SABAP2 have achieved through the years since the project started in July 2007. It shows the coverage map every alternative year in July, and the final slide shows the impressive additional coverage in just one month between 22 July and 22 August 2013. It also shows how the Bateleur has decreased and six bulbul species have increased since SABAP1, two decades ago.

The Southern African Bird Atlas Project 2 (SABAP2) is a partnership between the Animal Demography Unit at the University of Cape Town, BirdLife South Africa, and the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) that aims to map the distribution and abundance of bird species across southern Africa annually between July 2007 and July 2012, and in November 2013, as led by Les Underhill and Michael Brooks of the Animal Demography Unit.

Farmers are increasingly guiding scientists in the development of adaptive mixed crop farming systems through early local participation in trials. Cotton and livestock are primary sources of income for farmers in southern Mali while maize, sorghum and millet are the staple food crops. The farmers face diverse risks and need to adapt to a changing production context.

Mapping as a tool for filling data gaps in grasslands and savannahs
There is conflicting data on the percentage of the world's land surface covered by grasslands and savannahs. Estimates range from 18% to 80%. Precise and disaggregated data is lacking due to limitations in existing databases. Producing more maps through additional funding could help verify estimates nationally and locally to improve data gaps. This information could then be incorporated into a virtual open-access data platform on grasslands and rangelands to better inform conservation efforts.

The Open Foris initiative provides tools for analyzing land use through agro-ecological zoning (AEZ) methodology. AEZ analysis yields knowledge about current and future land production potentials, helps identify limitations, and provides insight into production gaps and their causes. It also examines synergies and trade-offs for sustainable development. The GAEZ Data Portal 3.0 is an interactive web application that reports on current and trending agricultural production and crop suitability using a multi-dimensional database. It provides public access to geospatial and tabular information on global, regional, and local agricultural resources and potential.

The TRIPS meeting for North Africa and West Asia took place from July 26 to 28. This presentation, presented by Dr. Ali Nefzaoui, Dr. Rachid Serraj, Dr. Maarten van Ginkel, and Dr. William Payne covered NA & WA Target Area and action site characterization. Basic descriptors included climate, topography, soils, water resources, land use/land cover, land degradation, demography, agricultural systems, governance, and research opportunities. Sites were delineated into high potential areas which are mainly cereal and fruit tree based and low potential areas which are mainly agropastoral and pastoral systems.
The presentation outlines means of reducing vulnerability and managing risk in high and low potential areas and describes their climate regimes. It also identifies constraints, hypothesis and outputs for both types of areas. Low potential area constraints include high population growth, limited water resources, transitional production systems, more frequent and prolonged droughts and inappropriate policies of land use.
Constraints for high production areas (areas in which sustainable intensification for more productive, profitable and diversified dryland agriculture with well established linkages to markets) include pressure to be efficient in order to compete globally, small farms inability to benefit from economies of scale and youth preference to transition to cities for livelihoods.

The TRIPS meeting for North Africa and West Asia took place from July 26 to 28. This presentation, presented by Dr. Ali Nefzaoui, Dr. Rachid Serraj, Dr. Maarten van Ginkel, and Dr. William Payne covered NA & WA Target Area and action site characterization. Basic descriptors included climate, topography, soils, water resources, land use/land cover, land degradation, demography, agricultural systems, governance, and research opportunities. Sites were delineated into high potential areas which are mainly cereal and fruit tree based and low potential areas which are mainly agropastoral and pastoral systems.
The presentation outlines means of reducing vulnerability and managing risk in high and low potential areas and describes their climate regimes. It also identifies constraints, hypothesis and outputs for both types of areas. Low potential area constraints include high population growth, limited water resources, transitional production systems, more frequent and prolonged droughts and inappropriate policies of land use.
Constraints for high production areas (areas in which sustainable intensification for more productive, profitable and diversified dryland agriculture with well established linkages to markets) include pressure to be efficient in order to compete globally, small farms inability to benefit from economies of scale and youth preference to transition to cities for livelihoods.

This study evaluated the impact of different levels of supplemental irrigation on olive productivity in Syria. The objectives were to enhance yields, minimize fluctuations, and increase water productivity. Treatments included rainfed (control), irrigating at 100% of crop water requirements (CWR), and 50% CWR. Results from 2012 showed that irrigation increased yields by 33-96% compared to rainfed. Applying 50% CWR increased yields over rainfed, with further gains from 100% CWR. Irrigation also improved water productivity and oil yields. Cost-benefit analysis found net profits were higher under irrigation. This study assessed the impact of switching from conventional flood irrigation to drip irrigation on fruit quality, oil yield, and oil composition of 36-year-old olive trees in Morocco. Five treatments were tested: flood irrigation, minimum or deep tillage with drip irrigation at 100% or 70% of crop water requirements. Results showed that highest yields and fruit weights were from deep tillage with deficit drip irrigation. Oil quality was generally improved with drip irrigation, shown by increased viscosity and stability. Sensory evaluation indicated oils from deficit drip irrigation expressed positive attributes more intensely. The Africa RISING Program

Experiments evaluated barley varieties and forage legume-cereal rotations under saline conditions in Khalidiyah station. Crop rotation trials under CA and conventional tillage were conducted in Mushaqar and Maru stations. Farmer demonstrations of Vicia ervilia, Vicia sativa and barley were held in Al Karak governorate. Plans were discussed to repair seeders and expand activities with FAO and new farmers in 2014-Dryland Systems' capacity development
The working group discussed capacity development needs and actions at the community and research/extension levels for the Jordan CRP DS Action Site. At the community level, they identified a need to establish a multi-stakeholder community of practice to improve coordination, integration, planning and reporting across stakeholders. They also proposed forming a task force to convene the first community meeting. At the research/extension level, they recommended various cross-cutting trainings on topics like gender, GIS, open access and M&E, as well as trainings on specific research topics such as conservation agriculture and natural resource management. The overall goal is to strengthen capacities to support agricultural research for development through a systems approach.

Monitor indicators of genetic diversity from space using Earth Observation data
Genetic diversity within and among populations is essential for species persistence. While targets and indicators for genetic diversity are captured in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, assessing genetic diversity across many species at national and regional scales remains challenging. Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) need accessible tools for reliable and efficient monitoring at relevant scales. Here, we describe how Earth Observation satellites (EO) make essential contributions to enable, accelerate, and improve genetic diversity monitoring and preservation. Specifically, we introduce a workflow integrating EO into existing genetic diversity monitoring strategies and present a set of examples where EO data is or can be integrated to improve assessment, monitoring, and conservation. We describe how available EO data can be integrated in innovative ways to support calculation of the genetic diversity indicators of the GBF monitoring framework and to inform management and monitoring decisions, especially in areas with limited research infrastructure or access. We also describe novel, integrative approaches to improve the indicators that can be implemented with the coming generation of EO data, and new capabilities that will provide unprecedented detail to characterize the changes to Earth’s surface and their implications for biodiversity, on a global scale.

Water polluted by dyestuffs compounds is a global threat to health and the environment; accordingly, we prepared a green novel sorbent chemical and Physical system from an algae, chitosan and chitosan nanoparticle and impregnated with algae with chitosan nanocomposite for the sorption of Malachite green dye from water. The algae with chitosan nanocomposite by a simple method and used as a recyclable and effective adsorbent for the removal of malachite green dye from aqueous solutions. Algae, chitosan, chitosan nanoparticle and algae with chitosan nanocomposite were characterized using different physicochemical methods. The functional groups and chemical compounds found in algae, chitosan, chitosan algae, chitosan nanoparticle, and chitosan nanoparticle with algae were identified using FTIR, SEM, and TGADTA/DTG techniques. The optimal adsorption conditions, different dosages, pH and Temperature the amount of algae with chitosan nanocomposite were determined. At optimized conditions and the batch equilibrium studies more than 99% of the dye was removed. The adsorption process data matched well kinetics showed that the reaction order for dye varied with pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity of the algae with chitosan nanocomposite toward malachite green dye reached as high as 15.5mg/g, respectively. Finally, multiple times reusing of algae with chitosan nanocomposite and removing dye from a real wastewater has made it a promising and attractive option for further practical applications.

Results of geophysics and pneumatic injection pilot tests during 2003 – 2007 yielded significant positive results for injection delivery design and contaminant mass treatment, resulting in permanent shut-down of an existing groundwater Pump & Treat system.
Accessible source areas were subsequently removed (2011) by soil excavation and treated with the placement of Emulsified Vegetable Oil EVO and zero-valent iron ZVI to accelerate treatment of impacted groundwater in overburden and weathered fractured bedrock. Post pilot test and post remediation groundwater monitoring has included analyses of CVOCs, organic fatty acids, dissolved gases and QuantArray® -Chlor to quantify key microorganisms (e.g., Dehalococcoides, Dehalobacter, etc.) and functional genes (e.g., vinyl chloride reductase, methane monooxygenase, etc.) to assess potential for reductive dechlorination and aerobic cometabolism of CVOCs.
In 2022, the first commercial application of MetaArray™ was performed at the site. MetaArray™ utilizes statistical analysis, such as principal component analysis and multivariate analysis to provide evidence that reductive dechlorination is active or even that it is slowing. This creates actionable data allowing users to save money by making important site management decisions earlier.
The results of the MetaArray™ analysis’ support vector machine (SVM) identified groundwater monitoring wells with a 80% confidence that were characterized as either Limited for Reductive Decholorination or had a High Reductive Reduction Dechlorination potential. The results of MetaArray™ will be used to further optimize the site’s post remediation monitoring program for monitored natural attenuation.

The incorporation of a 3DCSM and completion of HRSC provided a tool for enhanced, data-driven, decisions to support a change in remediation closure strategies. Currently, an approved pilot study has been obtained to shut-down the remediation systems (ISCO, P&T) and conduct a hydraulic study under non-pumping conditions. A separate micro-biological bench scale treatability study was competed that yielded positive results for an emerging innovative technology. As a result, a field pilot study has commenced with results expected in nine-twelve months. With the results of the hydraulic study, field pilot studies and an updated risk assessment leading site monitoring optimization cost lifecycle savings upwards of $15MM towards an alternatively evolved best available technology remediation closure strategy.

The modification of an existing product or the formulation of a new product to fill a newly identified market niche or customer need are both examples of product development. This study generally developed and conducted the formulation of aramang baked products enriched with malunggay conducted by the researchers. Specifically, it answered the acceptability level in terms of taste, texture, flavor, odor, and color also the overall acceptability of enriched aramang baked products. The study used the frequency distribution for evaluators to determine the acceptability of enriched aramang baked products enriched with malunggay.
