Good WordPress Gone Bad – How To Troubleshoot WordPress When Things Go WrongDamon Schopen
We’ve all been there. Your finger is on the mouse, ready to click, but you pause. You think to yourself, “Will this click be the one that I regret? The one that can’t be undone?”
Sometimes you’re working away when you get the dreaded error message. Frustrated and confused you think, “Great, now what do I do?”
WordPress is an amazing platform that offers a lot of flexibility and control, but with that flexibility comes more complex problems. Many people who are unfamiliar with WordPress are often afraid of making a mistake. Fear and apprehension are common emotions when a WordPress site has an issue. Knowing how to solve a few of the most common problems can give even beginners the confidence to use WordPress without anxiety.
Some of the topics that will be covered include:
What is a good backup strategy for when things go wrong?
How do you use revision history to undo mistakes?
What should you do when you see, “Error establishing a database connection.”
What to do when you see only a blank white screen?

How to Win Friends and Influence WordPress CoreDrewAPicture
Presented at WordCamp Portland, September 23, 2017.
It’s no secret that one of the WordPress core team’s greatest barriers to entry is contributors feeling like they don’t have anything of value to offer; nothing could be further from the truth.
Every potential contributor has something to offer whether they realize it or not, and this session will give them many of the tools and advice they’ll need to succeed in helping to influence the future of WordPress.
Topics covered: entry points for contributors of all levels, whether they’re developers, designers, copywriters, or everyday users. We’ll briefly cover the process of joining the “Making WordPress” community, methods to have your voice heard, submitting patches and keeping trac tickets moving, bringing core down to the local community level, and more.

Show vs. Tell in UX Design (Front in Amsterdam)Zoe Gillenwater
We’ve all heard these “laws” of design: “People don’t read on the web.” “If you have to explain how to use your product, you’ve failed.” “A picture is worth a thousand words.” It seems like our job as designers is to make things as intuitive as possible, using as few words as possible so that the meaning is self-evident through our visual design. But does this always produce the best user experience? Is showing always better than telling? We’ll look at several examples of design from the real world, the web, and apps that use showing, telling, or both as a method for producing the best UX. Rather than just assuming one is always better than the other, learn how to choose the right approach for your particular design problem and users.

FL Blog Con 2015: How To Find The Best WordPress Plugins For You
1. How to Find the Best
WordPress Plugins for You
Adam Soucie & David Laietta
2. Today you’ll learn...
• What to look for in a plugin
• Where you can find reliable plugins
• Which plugins you should use regardless of
your site content
@davidlaietta@adamsoucie
3. A little about us
• Web Developer
• Primarily focused on
WordPress
• WordCamp Orlando
organizers
@davidlaietta@adamsoucie
7. Updates matter.
• Only use current plugins
• Because security.
• Check the change logs
• You may not understand them, but they should be
somewhat helpful
• Too many updates is a red flag
• If it updates every week, STAY AWAY
@davidlaietta@adamsoucie
8. “A good plugin does one thing,
and does that one thing well.”
- Andrew Norcross
9. There is no single site solution.
• Your mechanic is not also your vet (I hope)
• Focused products keep your project focused
• Distractions take time, which costs you
money
• Exceptions for complicated matters like SEO
@davidlaietta@adamsoucie
11. One Click Installation is the goal
• Plugin files should install with a single .zip file
• FTP stands for “%&$# that plugin” because
you should never have to FTP for install
• All plugins on the WordPress repo have a one-
click install button
@davidlaietta@adamsoucie
13. Settings Pages are the Devil.
• The plugin should just work.
• If the plugin does just one thing, why does it
take so long to set up?
• At most, you should only have to visit a
settings page on the initial install
• Again, SEO is the exception
@davidlaietta@adamsoucie
