FIXED DENTAL BRIDGE
• Is the branch of Prosthodontics, that deals with
the replacement of missing tooth or teeth using
an artificial substitute that permanently
cemented in place .
TYPES OF FIXED DENTAL
BRIDGE
1- TRADITIONAL TYPES
A. Fixed Fixed Bridge
B. Fixed movable Bridge
C. Fixed removable Bridge (Andrews' bridge)
2 - Resin Bounded Bridge :
A - Maryland Bridge B - Rochate Bridge
3 - Cantilever Bridge and Spring
cantilever .
4- Implant Support Bridge .
Classification of FPD
ACCORDING TO POSITION
• 1- Anterior FPD :
It extends only between the anterior teeth , doesn't cross or
cross the midline . ( central , lateral , canine )
• 2- Posterior FPD:
It extends only between the posterior teeth .
( molar , premolar )
• 3- Complex FPD:
It extends at one of its terminals beyond the canine .
ACCORDING TO RETENTION
• 1- Simple bridge : it is one single bridge, and it may be :
1- Fixed- Fixed : which is fixed at both ends to the abutment
teeth.
2- Fixed- Supported : which is connected to one of the
terminal abutment teeth by a non-rigid connector to allow
some individual movements of the patient.
CONT .
• 2- Cantilever and Spring cantilever
* Cantilever : which is a free-end bridge, where the pontic is
fixed to and derives its support from one or double
retainers at one end only and the other end is unsupported.
* Spring cantilever bridge : which is a cantilever bridge, where
the pontic is at the end of slightly resilient curved arm deriving
its support from an abutment tooth remote from edentulous
space.
CONT .
• 3-Compound bridge :
it is a combination type of bridge, contains more than one
type of simple bridge .
ACCORDING TO MATERIAL
• 1- Metallic :
a - precious alloy .
b - semi precious alloy .
c - non precious alloy .
• 2 - non metallic :
all resin , all ceramic .
• 3- Combined :
metallic with labial or buccal veneers metallic
with lingual .
ACCORDING TO THE LENGTH OF SPAN
• 1- short span ( one missing tooth )
• 2- medium span ( two missing teeth )
• 3- long span ( more than two missing teeth )
ACCORDING TO THE CHRONOLOGY OF SPAN
• 1 - Provisional bridge .
• 2 - Temporary bridge .
• 3 - immediate bridge .
• 4 - Definitive bridge .
ACCORDING TO THE NUMBER OF TEETH
MISSING AND THE NUMBER OF ABUTMENTS
1. Simple ( one missing tooth, two abutments )
2. Complex ( two missing teeth, two abutments )
3. Complex ( two missing teeth, more than two
abutments )
4. Complex ( Pier abutment )
COMPONENT OF FIXED BRIDGE
Retainer
Pontic
Connector
Abutmentresidual area
RETAINER
• The part of a fixed dental prosthesis that
unites the abutments to the remainder of
the restoration.
PONTIC
• An artificial tooth on a fixed dental prosthesis that
replaces a missing natural tooth , restores in function,
and usually fills the space previously occupied by the
clinical crown.
CONNECTOR
• The portion of a fixed prosthesis that
unites the retainer and pontic
ABUTMENTS
• it is a natural tooth or an implant used to support
and retain the FPD at one or both terminals.
RESIDUAL AREA
• The area in the gums for the missing tooth
