Five Senses!!!
Imagine this-----You are home from school, sick with a cold. (oh, boy!)
Mom calls from the kitchen, “Are you hungry, honey?” Your stomach
rumbles…”I sure am Mom! What’s for lunch?” you say. “How does
ravioli sound?” Mom asks. Ravioli ! Your favorite!
Here it comes…a nice big plate of the best food in the world ! The
first bite is always the best…mmm…huh ?! Wait a minute ! You can
feel it in your mouth, a warm, slippery mound…but where’s the flavor
? And the aroma ? That you love …You can’t taste it. You can’t smell
it either. ( Oh Man ! ) That favorite meal just isn’t the same with
only half the sensory information.
Our senses each do a different job and they are able to work
independently. But when they all work together, the world seems
like a whole different place.
Let’s investigate this idea…and by the way,
I hope you feel better soon.  Ah Choo!
IntroductionIntroduction
• As a class we will discuss the 5 senses, to find out what we
already know.
• The class will divide into 5 groups of 5 students.
• In small groups, explore the web resources to find out more about
the 5 senses and the brain.
• Identify the 5 senses and the sense organs they relate to.
• Explore the classroom in small groups using your 5 senses.
• Next, try using only 1 of your senses to investigate things in the
classroom environment.
• Collect a different object related to each of the 5 senses.
• Create a senses journal.
• Present your journal as a group, to the rest of the class.
TasksTasks
• As a class, we will talk about our 5 senses and the sense
organs that correspond with each sense.
• We will discuss how we use our 5 senses to learn about the
world around us.
• Break up into 5 groups of 5 students each.
• Each group will explore the web resources listed.
• Print out a copy of the “Make sense worksheet” for each
person in the group and complete it while exploring the web
resources. (Don’t worry about the words in the last column.)
ProcessProcess
The links in this section each relate to 1 of the 5 senses.
Please take your time and explore each link.
Sight - http://freda.auyeung.net/5senses/see.htm
Hearing - http://freda.auyeung.net/5senses/hear.htm
Taste - http://freda.auyeung.net/5senses/taste.htm
Touch - http://freda.auyeung.net/5senses/touch.htm
Smell - http://freda.auyeung.net/5senses/smell.htm
Process continued
• Test your sense of sight at this website, choose just one
picture and search for the hidden objects.
http://www.highlightskids.com/GamesandGiggles/HiddenPics/HIdd
• Here are some fun tricks to play on your eyes.
http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/chvision.html
Process continued
• At this next website, you can listen to a story about
“listening” and then play the game that follows, to see how
many sounds you can identify.
http://www.highlightskids.com/Stories/AudioStories/Feb05_anEa
• Try this sound/memory game and see how many sounds
you can identify.
http://pbskids.org/fetch/games/dogears/index.html
Process continued
• Print out the “5 Senses Bookmarks” from the next link and
cut them out to take with you on your explorations. (make
sure each person has one)
http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/wwwsens.html
• Print out a “5 Senses Journal” for each group from this
link.
http://teacher.scholastic.com/LessonPlans/unit_imspecial_Journal
• Using your “5 Senses Bookmarks” and your “5 Senses
Journals” the groups will explore the classroom
environment in search of objects using their senses.
• The sense of taste will be limited to a designated tasting
station. (taking into account any food allergies)
Process continued
1. Each group will choose an object that can be examined and
described using only 1 of the senses, a student in that group
will record their choice and write in complete sentences using
“adjectives” to describe the item in the “Senses Journal”. Use
as many adjectives as you can think of. (Example: We used our
eyes to see that an apple is round, red and shiny. The sense we
used was sight.)
2. The journal writer for that entry will also illustrate their
choice.
• Repeat the previous 2 steps until the group has chosen an
object that corresponds with each of the 5 senses. (Allowing a
different student to record and illustrate their findings each
time, so that everyone has a turn writing and illustrating in the
“Senses Journal”)
Process continued
• When each group has completed the “Senses Journal” entries for each
of the 5 senses, the groups will take turns presenting their findings in
the form of a guessing game.
1. The presenting group will tell just the adjectives used to describe their
item. (Example: “Item # 1 is round, red and shiny.)
2. The remainder of the class will try to guess the item being described
and tell the sense that was used. (Notice how much harder it is to
identify something with information from only 1 sense.)
3. The presenting group will then tell the answer and show their illustration.
• These 3 steps will be repeated for each sense item.
• Each group will take a turn presenting their journal entries in this
format.

• Then human body is an amazing thing!
• Human beings and other living creatures learn about
the world by using their senses. Our senses help us
to gather information from the outside world, and
then send that information to our brains where the
information is processed.
• Separately, each sense can gather information but
working together, our senses and our brains help us
to make amazing discoveries and develop an
understanding of the world around us.
ConclusionConclusion
The resources for this webquest are included in the process portion
because students need to access some of them in a specific
sequence. Also the “Make Sense Worksheet” has some more
advanced vocabulary in the last column.
I have also listed the resources here:
