All across the Great Plains, towns are hanging on by a thread. This
chapter investigates population patterns, explaining why people move
from place to place, why some cities get so large, and why small towns
sometimes die. It will also look at the effects on the physical environ-
ment of population change and our way of life.
Demography: The Study
of Population
When humans first began to cultivate plants some 12,000 years ago,
Earth’s entire Homo sapiens population was about 5 million, or about
the number of people living in Colorado today. Very slow growth
pushed the total in 1 C.E. to perhaps 300 million, or about the popu-
lation of the United States today.
Starting around 1750, world population began to spike upward.
We are currently adding nearly 83 million people to the planet each
year; the world now holds 6.8 billion people.
The causes and consequences of this drama are the focus of
demography, the study of human population. Demography (from the
Greek, meaning “description of people”) is a cousin of sociology that
analyzes the size and composition of a population and studies how
and why people move from place to place. Demographers not only
collect statistics but also raise important questions about the effects
of population growth and suggest how it might be controlled. The
following sections present basic demographic concepts.
Fertility
The study of human population begins with how many people are
born. Fertility is the incidence of childbearing in a country’s population.
During a woman’s childbearing years, from the onset of menstruation
(typically in the early teens) to menopause (usually in the late for-
ties), she is capable of bearing more than twenty children. But
fecundity, or maximum possible childbearing, is sharply reduced by
cultural norms, finances, and personal choice.
Demographers describe fertility using the crude birth rate, the
number of live births in a given year for every 1,000 people in a popu-
lation. To calculate a crude birth rate, divide the number of live births
in a year by the total population and multiply the result by 1,000. In
the United States in 2008, there were 4.25 million live births in a pop-
ulation of 304 million, yielding a crude birth rate of 14.0 (Hamil-
ton, Martin, & Ventura, 2010).

As a human service leader, I am interested in working in New York City (NYC). NYC, officially known as the City of New York, is a port and a metropolis located at the mouth of the Hudson River, the Northeastern part of the United States, and the Southeastern part of New York State. This state is the largest and most influential United States metropolis, encompassing a massive landmass covering Manhattan, the Staten islands, a section of the New York state's mainland in the North of Manhattan, and some portions of Long Island. In this regard, NYC is a collection of various neighborhoods amalgamated to form the most ethnically diverse city in America. The City of New York traces its roots from a trading post founded by the Dutch colonists at the Southern Tip of Manhattan circa 1626 (The Library of Congress, n.d.) Since its discovery in the 1600s, NYC has flourished, becoming the most populous city in America.
Demographics
As aforementioned, NYC is the most populous metropolitan in the United States. According to data from the World Population Review (2021), the City of New York had a population of 8,230,290, making it the largest city in the state of New York and the United States in general. Besides that, NYC has the highest population density among all the U.S. states, with an estimated 27000 people per square mile (NYC Planning, n.d.). Due to its high population, NYC contributes to a significant part of the total U.S. population, with 1 in every 38 Americans living in New York (NYC Planning, n.d.). As mentioned earlier, the City of New York is inhabited by culturally diverse populations. According to the (U.S Census Bureau) n.d., the White population accounts for 42.7% of the total NYC population, Black or African Americans being 24.3%, American Indian and Alaska Natives 0.4%, Asian alone 14.1%, and Hispanic or Latino being 29.1%. Due to the diverse cultural heritage of New York, religion in the City is diverse, consisting of Christian, unaffiliated, and non-Christian faiths. Christians account for 59% of the total NYC population, with Catholics being 33%, evangelical protestants (9%), Mainline Protestant (8%), historically Black Protestant (6%) and Mormon, Jehovah's Witnesses, Orthodox Christian, each having a 1% representation (Pew Research Center, n.d.).Jewish faith accounts for 8%, Muslim 3%, Buddhist 1%, Hindu 3%, and Atheist and Agnostic being 4% each (Pew Research Center, n.d.). The government of NYC ensures that its citizens are provided with essential services through collaboration with the State government.

AUTONOMA - Laura Williams - The 'New' Frontiers
At this moment, California is in economic, political, and developmental turmoil. Leading economic sectors are changing, the segregation between California’s coastal hubs and its middle land is undeniable, and its transport network is both clogged and deteriorating. However, California is still a productive cornucopia of resources: valuable land for development, the agriculturally fertile central valley, and an increasingly skilled work force. Embedded in these two Californias, the deteriorating and the prosperous, are low density residential units that extend in every direction but the ocean. The northern edge of Los Angeles, though, is so geologically extreme that this sprawl has not leapt across the San Gabriel Mountains. Instead, urban expansion on the edge has founded stand-in towns, staging and production areas for the Los Angeles Basin and gateway to the Central Valley. Simultaneously, this is the ground of exchange between the glamour and mythos of Los Angeles and the wholly separate agrarian societies of the Central Valley and High Desert.
There are two potentials here, the first is in reinventing the way in which cities are expanded: a replicable typology that takes advantage of robust infrastructures but reimagines their connections with embedded focus points. The second is to acknowledge the history and character of northern Los Angeles as gateway to the High Desert and Central Valley, and reimagine a way in which inhabitants of these more rural societies can be connected to new economies and opportunities through existing logistics spaces.
In the years since the American financial crisis there has been a rise in temporary employment, not just in the traditional sectors of the farmworker or seasonal salesman, but across industries from manufacturing to business. These workers come from a variety of backgrounds and operate in any number of sectors and locations, but are connected through their constant condition of domestic transience. In rethinking the edges of cities we must also interrogate the territories they are encroaching upon, and can perhaps begin to imagine a new system of shared domestic spaces that operates opportunistically within existing infrastructural and logistics spaces. This paper will interrogate the territories between cities, those simultaneously on the edge and in the middle, and reimagine how the mobile workforce can take advantage of infrastructural connectivity to enhance their personal autonomy.

According to data from the World Population Review (2021), the City of New York had a population of 8,230,290, making it the largest city in the state of New York and the United States in general. Besides that, NYC has the highest population density among all the U.S. states, with an estimated 27000 people per square mile (NYC Planning, n.d.). Due to its high population, NYC contributes to a significant part of the total U.S. population, with 1 in every 38 Americans living in New York (NYC Planning, n.d.). As mentioned earlier, the City of New York is inhabited by culturally diverse populations. According to the (U.S Census Bureau) n.d., the White population accounts for 42.7% of the total NYC population, Black or African Americans being 24.3%, American Indian and Alaska Natives 0.4%, Asian alone 14.1%, and Hispanic or Latino being 29.1%. Due to the diverse cultural heritage of New York, religion in the City is diverse, consisting of Christian, unaffiliated, and non-Christian faiths. Christians account for 59% of the total NYC population, with Catholics being 33%, evangelical protestants (9%), Mainline Protestant (8%), historically Black Protestant (6%) and Mormon, Jehovah's Witnesses, Orthodox Christian, each having a 1% representation (Pew Research Center, n.d.).Jewish faith accounts for 8%, Muslim 3%, Buddhist 1%, Hindu 3%, and Atheist and Agnostic being 4% each (Pew Research Center, n.d.). The government of NYC ensures that its citizens are provided with essential services through collaboration with the State government.

AUTONOMA - Laura Williams - The 'New' Frontiers
At this moment, California is in economic, political, and developmental turmoil. Leading economic sectors are changing, the segregation between California’s coastal hubs and its middle land is undeniable, and its transport network is both clogged and deteriorating. However, California is still a productive cornucopia of resources: valuable land for development, the agriculturally fertile central valley, and an increasingly skilled work force. Embedded in these two Californias, the deteriorating and the prosperous, are low density residential units that extend in every direction but the ocean. The northern edge of Los Angeles, though, is so geologically extreme that this sprawl has not leapt across the San Gabriel Mountains. Instead, urban expansion on the edge has founded stand-in towns, staging and production areas for the Los Angeles Basin and gateway to the Central Valley. Simultaneously, this is the ground of exchange between the glamour and mythos of Los Angeles and the wholly separate agrarian societies of the Central Valley and High Desert.
There are two potentials here, the first is in reinventing the way in which cities are expanded: a replicable typology that takes advantage of robust infrastructures but reimagines their connections with embedded focus points. The second is to acknowledge the history and character of northern Los Angeles as gateway to the High Desert and Central Valley, and reimagine a way in which inhabitants of these more rural societies can be connected to new economies and opportunities through existing logistics spaces.
In the years since the American financial crisis there has been a rise in temporary employment, not just in the traditional sectors of the farmworker or seasonal salesman, but across industries from manufacturing to business. These workers come from a variety of backgrounds and operate in any number of sectors and locations, but are connected through their constant condition of domestic transience. In rethinking the edges of cities we must also interrogate the territories they are encroaching upon, and can perhaps begin to imagine a new system of shared domestic spaces that operates opportunistically within existing infrastructural and logistics spaces. This paper will interrogate the territories between cities, those simultaneously on the edge and in the middle, and reimagine how the mobile workforce can take advantage of infrastructural connectivity to enhance their personal autonomy.
