Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot launched the 'Indira Gandhi Smartphone Scheme' in Jaipur, under which 1.35 crore women in the state will receive smartphones. In the first phase, 40 lakh women and girl students were distributed smartphones. The scheme aims to empower women through technology and provide access to information about government schemes. The launch event was attended by several political leaders and marked an effort by Gehlot to reach out to voters ahead of state elections through this digital initiative.

Amit Shah on Tuesday
said that those rejoicing
over SC decision on the
ED case are delusional
for various reasons:
Amendments to CVC
Act, which were duly
passed by the Parlia-

ED is an institution
which rises beyond any
one individual and is
focused on achieving its
core objective — i.e. to
probe offences of money
laundering and violations.
Thus, who ED director
is — that is not important
as whoever assumes role
will take note of the ram-
pant corruption of a cozy
club of entitled dynasts.
Mamata’s goons forcefully
got the polls done. Central
security force was not
allowed to reach and there
were no CCTVs in polling
stations. We have lost in
many centres by 2,424
votes. Our victory in WB is
that people are coming on

IN-DEPTH
A PYRRHIC WIN FOR
TRINAMOOL IN WB’S
PANCHAYAT POLL
fter all the violence and 36 political murders
in 30 days, Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool
Congress is on the verge of sweeping the
panchayat elections. Though a pyrrhic victory, she
can now gloat over her win and the murder of democ-
racy at the grass-roots level in West Bengal. She can
also blame the rival parties for the killings. The BJP,
Congress and the CPI-M accuse Mamata of using
goons to terrorise their workers.
Trends showed the TMC leading in gram panchay-
ats and poised to grab a majority of seats. The CPI-M
and the BJPwere lagging way behind the ruling party.
West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has sub-
mitted his report on poll violence to Union Home
Minister Amit Shah. Bose described the killings as a
blot on democracy and said that he would do every-
thing to bring the situation under control and ensure
that such violence is not repeated in future. Just to
remind him, the culture of violence is too deep-root-
ed in West Bengal.
A
HOPE KINDLES FOR
WOMENWRESTLERS
hatthegovernment-appointedOversightCom-

Delhi Police in its charge-sheet against Brij
Bhushan Sharan Singh, the controversial president of
the Wrestling Federation of India. Women wrestlers
staged nearly a two-month-long dharna at Jantar Man-
tar in Delhi demanding Singh’s removal. They accused
him of sexually exploiting women wrestlers, some of
whom won medals for the country at the international
level.TomalignthesportspersonsSingh’scamplikened
thedharnabywrestlerswiththeShaheenBaghprotests.
But those who know of Singh’s background were
sympathetic towards women wrestlers. However, for
reasons better known
to the Oversight
Committee headed
by ace boxer Mary
Kom the wrestlers’
shocking complaints
did not find a men-
tion in the commit-
tee’s report. This
gave the impression
that the committee
members were either
in awe of Singh or
they did not find sub-
stance in the allega-
tions of sexual har-
assment which. Sin-
gh has denied the al-
legations outright.
Hope of Singh’s
prosecution and re-
moval has brightened
with the charge-sheet
prepared by the Del-
hi Police which in-
vestigated the complaints. Police charge-sheet has
thrown up some frightening details from the accounts
of female wrestlers and witnesses. The police charge-
sheet mentions six wrestlers and 16 witnesses but
does not identify them for obvious reasons.
The allegations mentioned in the charge-sheet in-
appropriate touching, calling one of them to bed,
molestation, stalking and threatening them. It is now
for the Delhi Police to ensure that their case against
the powerful Member of Parliament is able to stand
legal scrutiny. Ideally Singh should now step down
as WFI chief.

INFIGHTING IN
TMC ISF
Coupled with infighting
in the TMC, the ISF has
benefited from protests in
the area against land
acquisition for a power
grid project, which
also saw two deaths in
alleged police firing.
Bhangor has been the
cynosure of all eyes. A win
at Bhangor is extremely
crucial for the TMC at a
time when the Muslim
vote is becoming a major
question. Also, the arrest
and “detention” of ISF
MLA Naushad Siddiqui in
prison for 42 days over a
violent protest in Kolkata,
have not gone down
well with the community.
In this context, it may be
said early in 2023, the
TMC lost one of its Mus-
lim-dominated strongholds
in Murshidabad in a bypoll.
POST- VIOLENCE IN PANCHAYAT POLLS
WHO WILL BAG THE
MINORITY VOTE?
Robin
Roy
The writer is Senior

hatever be
the outcome
of the Pan-
chayat polls,
2023, the
pre-poll and during the
poll… the unabated vio-
lence has left an indelible
mark on the minds of the
people of West Bengal and
the entire nation has taken
note of it.
For those who did not
forget the violence during
the 2021 Assembly elec-
tions, unfortunately it was
a repeat telecast. West
Bengal Governor, Dr CV
Ananda Bose, had a trying
time during the run-up to
the polls as he turned into
a ‘Ground Zero Guv’ and
visited the strife-torn are-
as.Also, the deployment of
central forces was a major
issue and the courts had to
step in and the entire script
had enough fodder to beat
any Bollywood flick based
on politics.
Now that the polls are
over, it’s time for the ana-
lysts to rewind the slides
and define the situation mi-
croscopically to foretell
what lies in store. The day
the polls were held, that is
on Saturday, reports of vio-
lence came in at frequent
intervals from districts like
Murshidabad, Malda,
North and South Dinajpur,
North and South 24 Parga-
nas and Burdwan. It may be
noted that in many of these
areas, more than 30% of the
population is Muslim.
It must also be noted that
the ISF, which is fighting
its second election in the
state with the 2021Assem-
bly polls being the first one
where it won 1 seat, is de-
termined to emerge as a
contender for the Muslim
vote inWest Bengal and till
the state went to the (pan-
chayat) polls, one of the
worst affected areas was
Bhangar and notably it is
from here that the ISF won
its only MLA seat in 2021.
When we speak of the
minority vote in West Ben-
gal, it must be mentioned
how the TMC looked to be
in a huff when the Sagar-
dighi seat was snatched
away in January this year
by the Congress, whose
candidate was backed by
the Left Front and the ISF.
Of course, in politics
strange bedfellows make
good partners as they say
and Byron Biswas the win-
ning candidate from the
much-hyped Sagardighi,
however, changed sides
surprising one and all and
is now in the TMC camp.
Nevertheless, TMC’s loss
at Sagardighi was the first
clear indicator that the
party could no longer
count (absolutely) on the
Muslim vote, thinking that
it is entirely behind it.
Strange things do happen
in politics.
The violence in the pan-
chayat polls, will in fact,
be a matter of concern for
the ruling party as finally
it is the government’s duty
to maintain law and order.
Since the Sagardighi deba-
cle, the TMC, however,
has made several changes
to reach out to Muslim
vote bank, including the
removal of Md Ghulam
Rabbani from the state’s
Minority Affairs Depart-
ment, and the creation of
separate development
boards for minorities and
especially for migrant la-
bourers.

Zelenskyy slams Biden’s ‘unprecedented absurd’stance

Zelensky tore
into NATO leaders in-
cluding President Biden
on Tuesday for not ex-
tending membership to
his war-torn country - in-
troducing fresh diplomat-
ic drama into the annual
gathering of the military
alliance’s leaders.
Zelensky slammed the
reticence as “weakness”
and “absurd” just mo-
ments after Biden re-
ferred to the development
of new language regard-
ing his country’s poten-
tial NATO ascension.
“Now, on the way to
Vilnius, we received sig-
nals that certain wording
is being discussed with-
out Ukraine.And I would
like to emphasize that this
wording is about the invi-
tation to become NATO
member, not about
Ukraine’s membership,”
Zelensky tweeted.
“It’s unprecedented
and absurd when a time
frame is not set neither for
the invitation nor for
Ukraine’s membership.
While at the same time
vague wording about
‘conditions’is added even
for inviting Ukraine.”
Zelensky added: “It
seems there is no readi-
ness neither to invite
Ukraine to NATO nor to
make it a member of the
Alliance. This means that
a window of opportunity
is being left to bargain
Ukraine’s membership in
NATO in negotiations
with Russia.And for Rus-
sia, this means motivation
to continue its terror.”

he world of fashion
has witnessed a re-
markable evolu-
tion with the rise of
a trend that goes
beyond clothing
and accessories - tattoo fashion. Tat-
toos, once considered rebellious or
associated with certain subcultures,
have now become a mainstream
form of self-expression and a prom-
inent element of contemporary fash-
ion. From intricate designs adorning
the bodies of models on the runway
to celebrities proudly displaying
their inked artwork on red carpets,
tattoos have transcended societal ta-
boos and are now celebrated as a
powerful means of personal story-
telling and style. This article delves
into the dynamic world of tattoo
fashion, exploring its history, cul-
tural significance, and its role in
shaping modern fashion trends.
Tattooing, an ancient practice with
roots dating back thousands of years,
has undergone a remarkable transfor-
mation in recent decades. Originally
associated with indigenous tribes,
religious rituals, and criminal affilia-
tions, tattoos have emerged from the
underground to become a vibrant and
legitimate art form. Advances in tat-
tooing techniques, combined with the
proliferation of talented artists, have
elevated the craftsmanship and visu-
al appeal of tattoos. Today, artists are
able to create intricate, hyper-realis-
tic designs, watercolour-like master-
pieces, and minimalist geometric
patterns, among many other styles,
catering to the diverse preferences of
tattoo enthusiasts.
The merging of tattoo artistry
with the fashion industry has opened
up new avenues for creativity and
self-expression. Fashion de-
signers have embraced
the visual impact
and storytell-
ing potential of tattoos, integrating
them into their collections in inno-
vative ways. Runway shows have
witnessed models donning tempo-
rary tattoos that complement and
enhance the overall aesthetic of the
clothing. Leading fashion houses
have collaborated with renowned
tattoo artists to create limited-edi-
tion clothing lines, blurring the lines
between art, fashion, and body mod-
ification. This collaboration has not
only elevated the status of tattoos
but has also given rise to a new cat-
egory of wearable art.
Just as fashion trends evolve, so do
tattoo trends. In recent years, micro
tattoos have gained popularity, char-
acterized by their small size and in-
tricate detailing. These delicate de-
signs often hold deep personal mean-
ings and are discreetly placed, allow-
ing individuals to express their indi-
viduality without overwhelming their
appearance. On the other end of the
spectrum, full-sleeve tattoos have
become a bold fashion statement.
These large-scale artworks, spanning
the entire arm, showcase elaborate
themes and narratives, transforming
the body into a living canvas. Addi-
tionally, watercolour tattoos, geomet-
ric patterns, and minimalist designs
have found their place in the world of
tattoo fashion, appealing to those
seeking a more abstract and contem-
porary aesthetic.
While tattoos undoubtedly en-
hance one's physical appearance,
they serve a deeper purpose as well.
Each tattoo represents a unique story,
capturing personal memories, pas-
sions, and beliefs. Tattoos can be a
form of self-reflection, a commemo-
ration of loved ones, a symbol of
triumph over adversity, or a repre-
sentation of cultural identity. They
allow individuals to express them-
selves authentically and proudly
display their life's journey on their
skin. In an era where self-expres-
sion is celebrated, tattoos have be-
come a powerful medium for
asserting one's individuality and
reclaiming control over one's
body.

teaching brother refuses
to get vaccinated for
COVID-19 and is confi-
dent that fresh air is the
best medicine. Your boss
is hiring another white
man for a leadership
team already made up en-
tirely of white men.
At home, at work and
in civic spaces, it’s not
uncommon to have con-
versations that make you
question the intelligence
and benevolence of your
fellow human beings.
A natural reaction is to
put forth the strongest ar-
gument for your own –
superior – perspective in
the hope that logic and
evidence will win the
day. When that argument
fails to have the intended
persuasive impact, peo-
ple often grow frustrated,
and disagreement be-
comes a conflict.
Thankfully, recent re-
search offers a different
approach.
For many years, psy-
chologists have touted
the benefits of making
parties in conflict feel
heard. Making someone
you’re arguing with feel
that you’re listening can
calm the troubled waters,
allowing both parties to
get safely to the opposite
shore. Two problems can
get in the way, though.
First, when encounter-
ing disagreement, most
people jump into “per-
suasion mode,” which
doesn’t leave much room
for listening, or even for
pursuing other goals
for the interaction.
Any conversation
could be an opportu-
nity to learn some-
thing new, build a rela-
tionship that might bear
fruit later, or simply have
an interesting experi-
ence. But most of those
goals get forgotten when
the urge to persuade sets
in. Second, and just as
important, is that even
when people do wish to
make their counterparts
feel heard they don’t
know how to do so.
I lead a team of psy-
chologists, negotiation
scholars and computa-
tional linguists who have
spent years studying
ways that parties in con-
flict can behave to make
their counterparts feel
they are thoughtfully en-
gaging with their per-
spective.
Rather than trying to
change how you think or
feel about your counter-
part, our work suggests
that you should focus on
changing your own be-
haviour. Focusing on be-
haviour rather than
thoughts and feelings
has two benefits: You
know when you are do-
ing it right, and so does
your counterpart. And
one of the easiest behav-
iours to change is the
words that you say.
A CONVERSATIONAL
TOOLBOX, BASED ON
WHAT WORKS
We used the tools of
computational linguistics
to analyze thousands of
interactions between
people who disagree
with each other on hot-
button social and politi-
cal issues: police brutal-
ity, campus sexual as-
sault, affirmative ac-
tion and COVID-19
vaccines. Based on
these analyses, we devel-
oped an algorithm that
picks out specific words
and phrases that make
people in conflict feel
that their counterpart is
thoughtfully engaging
with their perspective.
These words and
phrases comprise a com-
munication style we call
“conversational recep-
tiveness.”Peoplewhouse
conversational receptive-
ness in their interactions
are rated more positively
by their conflict counter-
parts on a variety of traits.
Then we experimented
with training people to
use the words and phrases
thathavethemostimpact,
even if they’re not natu-
rally inclined to do so. For
example, in one of our
earlier studies, we had
people who held different
positions about the Black
Lives Matter movement
talk to each other.
Those who received
brief conversational re-
ceptiveness training were
seen as more desirable
teammates and advisers
by their counterparts.
Training also turned out
to make people more per-
suasive in their argu-
ments than those who did
not learn about conversa-
tional receptiveness.
MEASURING
BENEFITS OF THE
TOOLS IN PRACTICE
In a recent set of studies,
my colleagues and I re-
cruited people who were
supportive of or hesitant
about getting COVID-19
vaccinations. We paired
vaccine-supportive par-
ticipants with the vac-
cine-hesitant and in-
structed them to persuade
their partners to get the
shot. Before the interac-
tion, we randomly as-
signed the vaccine sup-
porters to receive brief
instructions in conversa-
tional receptiveness or
guidance simply to use
the best arguments they
could think of.
We found that partici-
pants who received a
couple of minutes of in-
struction in conversation-
al receptiveness were
seen as more trustworthy
and more reasonable by
their counterparts. Their
counterparts were also
more willing to talk to
them about other topics.
That’s an all-too-fa-
miliar experience for par-
ents of teenagers who
seem to have advanced
degrees in ignoring un-
welcome advice.
Healthcare providers
often face a similar
challenge when they try
to persuade patients to
change behaviours they
do not wish to change.
In the workplace, this
burden is most acutely
felt by people lower in
the hierarchy trying to
have their views heard
by higher-ups who just
don’t have to listen.
In recent years, many
scholars across the social
sciences have expressed
concern about Ameri-
cans’seeming inability to
talk to their political op-
ponents.
Yet the skills that are
necessary for Democrats
and Republicans to en-
gage with one another are
similarly lacking. Our
work on conversational
receptiveness builds on
extensive prior research
on the benefits of show-
ing engagement with op-
posing perspectives.
WE ENCAPSULATE THIS CONVERSATIONAL STYLE IN THE SIMPLE ACRONYM H.E.A.R.
H = Hedge your claims, even when you
feel very certain about your beliefs. It
signals a recognition that there are some
cases or some people who might support
your opponent’s perspective.
E = Emphasize agreement. Find some
common ground even when you disagree
on a particular topic. This does not mean
compromising or changing your mind,
but rather recognizing that most people
in the world can find some broad ideas
or values to agree on.
A = Acknowledge the opposing perspec-
tive. Rather than jumping into your own
argument, devote a few seconds to
restating the other person’s position to
demonstrate that you did indeed hear and
understand it.
R = Reframing to the positive. Avoid
negative and contradictory words, such as
“no,” “won’t” or “do not.” At the same time,
increase your use of positive words to
change the tone of the conversation.

his is a fast-paced and an
honest account of a story
the media has made all
too familiar to us. The
story provides us with back-
ground information as well as an
abundance of description, set-
ting the atmosphere and thus
providing us (the readers) with
a vivid image of what is taking
place.
Malala notably says to her-
self, at the time of being in-
terviewed: ‘I have a father
who isn’t scared, who
stands by me’. This atti-
tude reflected on Mala-
la and has developed
into the headstrong,
sensible and ambi-
tious individual
she is today; this
is portrayed
throughout the
book.
This capti-

evokes a va-
riety of
emotions in
us, as readers. We begin to realise
that there are people out there who
live quite differently to us and do not
have the necessities of life. We begin
to comprehend the many things that
we take for granted, be that physical
or political, or even emotional.
Hopefully, many of us will start to
recognise that living in the West we
have it easy and should applaud
those who make a stand against the
oppression they live under.

MALALA DAY 2023
I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR:
Fans of historical fiction and those
who read books that are of inspira-
tion and struggle. This is definitely
worth a read. I would give this book
5/5. This is because I believe it is
a story of inspiration as well as the
reality of struggle. Also, it is fast-
paced; contains pictures and many
anecdotes (to help set the scene).
Malala Yousafzai
Malala with the students
From internally being displaced from her own town in 2009 to surviving a
shot in the neck and head by a Taliban gunman in 2012, Malala rose as a
symbol of resilience and strength. As the world celebrtaes Malala Day today,
in honour of Nobel Peace Prize recipient Malala Yousafzai, City First highlights
the extraordinary girl, who fought for the education and basic rights of
women via her book, 'I am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and
was Shot by the Taliban by Malala Yousafazi and Christina Lamb'.
