FIRST AND
SECOND
CONDITIONALS
Everything you do in life has a
consequence… what would it be..?
Most actions have a consequence...
action consequence possible or imaginary?
study hard for an exam pass with flying colors
possible
(I can study hard)
imaginary
(I never study hard)
have a lot of money buy a new house
imaginary
(I don’t have a lot of money)
have a new job be able to pay for a new phone
possible
(I can find a new job)
imaginary
(I do not have a job)
This action can be POSSIBLE or REAL or they can be IMAGINARY,
meaning that you IMAGINE the result, because in reality, it is not like that...
What’s a conditional?
It is a SITUATION and ITS RESULT
● Begins with if, when, before, unless,
after, as soon as, etc.
● Can be REAL (we use the present
simple)
● Can be IMAGINARY (we use the past
simple)
● Depends on the situation
● REAL SITUATION = will / won’t + base
verb
● IMAGINARY SITUATION = would /
wouldn’t + base verb
Speaking of consequences...
THE SITUATION IS POSSIBLE OR REAL THE SITUATION IS IMAGINARY OR NOT REAL
● Use the first conditional.
Remember:
If I study hard for my exams, I will pass with flying
colors.
If I have a new job, I will be able to pay for a new
phone.
If Jessica comes late to class, she won’t
understand the lesson.
If my mother lets me, I will go to a party on
Saturday.
● Use the second conditional.
Remember:
If I studied hard for my exams, I would pass with
flying colors. (I don’t study hard so I don’t pass my exams)
If I had a new job, I would be able to pay for a
new phone. (I don’t have a job so I won’t pay for a new phone)
If Jessica came late to class, she wouldn’t
understand the lesson. (She never comes late and always
understands)
If my mother let me, I would go to a party on
Saturday. (She doesn’t let me so I don’t go to parties)
Situation Result
Present Simple will / won’t
Situation Result
past Simple would / wouldn’t
So, remember...
FIRST CONDITIONAL SECOND CONDITIONAL
Means that the result of the situation is very
probable, possible and real.
Means that the result and the situation are
imaginary because they are not the reality. It’s the
opposite of the reality. I need to imagine what the
consequence can be.
present simple + will / won’t past simple + would / wouldn’t
can be contracted with a personal pronoun
I’ll go to a concert if my friends invite me ⇒ First conditional. Notice, I’ll = I will + invite = present simple
I’d go to a concert if my friends invited me ⇒ Second conditional. Notice, I’d = I would + invited = past simple
Finally, remember that...
The conditional parts (situation or result) can be interchanged. You can begin with the situation
and then the result or the result and then the situation:
SITUATION, RESULT OR RESULT SITUATION
● When I see my mother, I will tell her about this fantastic book.
● I will tell my mother about this fantastic book when I see her.
● When you see this movie, you’ll love it.
● You’ll love this movie when you see it.
● I’d be sleeping now if I didn’t have class today.
● If I didn’t have class today, I’d be sleeping now.
● I’d answer all the questions if I knew the answers!
● If I knew the anwers I’d answer all the questions!
