Fire Safety:
Implementing Water Mist in
Historical Museum Buildings
2. _Introduction
September 16, 2017 / ICAMT Annual Meeting 2017, Flanders BE 2
_Contents of presentation:
- Some principles of fire safety:
- non museum specific
- historical museum buildings (monuments)
- What is a Water Mist Installation?
- Case Study: Teylers Museum, Haarlem NL
- Analysis (technical and process) and lessons learned
3. _Principles Fire Safety
September 16, 2017 / ICAMT Annual Meeting 2017, Flanders BE 3
- Non museum specific/general principles
- building structure (compartmentalising)
- organisational (no or low risk introduction)
- installations:
- preventive measures
- repressive measures
- Museum specific issues:
- Care for the collection
- In historical buildings/monuments: Limits to
compartmentalisation
4. _Principles Fire Safety
September 16, 2017 / ICAMT Annual Meeting 2017, Flanders BE 4
_Museum Specific :
- Preventive measures: f.e. low oxygen
- Repressive measures: f.e. water, gas, foam,..
- Repression with water: f.e. sprinkler installation, either
conventional or water mist
- Main ingredients are the same:
- water, tank, pump, pipes and nozzles
5. _Water Mist Installation
September 16, 2017 / ICAMT Annual Meeting 2017, Flanders BE 5
_What is it?
A quick overview/comparison:
- High pressure (80 bar vs 3 bar)
- Very fine mist, high cooling capacity, around objects (not
just on), effectively stopping the fire
- Less water (but still quite some, smaller basin)
- Dedicated spray/area of effect
- Refined installation: slim pipes, small nozzles
- Less damage to the collection? Not scientifically tested and
proven in museum environment, but may be assumed
6. _Water Mist Installation
September 16, 2017 / ICAMT Annual Meeting 2017, Flanders BE 6
- A quick comparison part II:
- Expensive (installation and maintenance)
- Complexities process:
- Few manufacturers (close to monopoly)
- No standard design protocols or standards (in NL): early
involvement or manufacturer and Notified Body required
- Technical complexities:
- Not suitable for high spaces (pressure drop)
- Noise level pump installation (when operational)
- Vibration level pump installation (when operational)
7. _Case Study: Teylers Museum
September 16, 2017 / ICAMT Annual Meeting 2017, Flanders BE 7
_Introducing the Teylers Museum Haarlem, NL
1784: the first and oldest museum of The Netherlands
- Legacy of Pieter Teyler van der Hulst (1712-1778)
- Ideals of the Enlightenment
- Advancing Science and the Arts: education and debate
- Unique ensemble: authentic building complex and collection of
18th Century
- Museum of Wonder

_Introducing the Lorentz Lab
- Hendrik Antoon Lorentz (Nobel Price in Physics 1902)
- Worked at Teylers Museum from 1909 until 1928
- Laboratory restored and added to the museum (May 2017)

30. _Analysis: technical and process
September 16, 2017 / ICAMT Annual Meeting 2017, Flanders BE 30
_Technical aspects
- Fully meets requirements and expectations
- Sizable installation: precise fit
- Test case for following phases
- Vibrations tested externally: implementation of measures
(risk to stucco) on site concrete floor slab, dampers, etc.
- Periodical test only when the museum is closed (acoustics)
31. _Analysis: technical and process
September 16, 2017 / ICAMT Annual Meeting 2017, Flanders BE 31
_Process
- Dependency on single manufacturer (delivery)
- Certification and dependency on Notified Body (availability)
- Challenges implementation in a monumental complex
- Impact on building and collection
- Impact maintenance
