The document discusses how banks and fintech companies are innovating by using customer data in new ways. It notes that some fintech companies are measuring customer value based on data like knowledge and connections, not just money. It also discusses how banks and fintechs can partner by banks providing robust customer data through APIs while fintechs provide new services. The industry agrees that creating value from customer data and authentication are important, and banks and fintechs should collaborate to better use data and innovate together.

In an age of consumer choice, anything that hints of hurting the account holder is a big mistake. If consumers think that you’re out to get them, you’ll lose their loyalty (and the revenue they bring). As proof, we surveyed 504 random US consumers about their banking experiences and found several data points that support the idea that advocacy is critically important. We put those stats — as well as quotes from industry analysts — in this presentation.

Great Banking Experience by Service Design - Banks vs. FinTechsChristian Graf
Cash money and banks as we know it will be gone in the near future. Digital financial services by new FinTechs will rule our everyday routines. This could be one scenario. Another could be that banks outrun FinTechs in the long run because of their established
customer base and big budget. Which of the two scenarios is more likely?
Together, we will look into the realities and opportunities of innovative concepts from Banks and FinTechs. Learnings from the past 15+ years of eBanking and new financial services will be presented. You will see how successful service designs for new banking services were created – both from FinTechs and from Banks. With the help of a Value
Proposition Canvas we will analyse some new digital financial services.
In the end, we will discuss the recent develoment in the FinTech realm: the first FinTech got a banking license in Germany. Now, time seems to be near that FinTechs and Banks compete even more, or they cooperate. The hypothesis is: FinTechs or Banks or Bank plus FinTech – it does not matter. What matters is how well the service meets the user needs and provides a great customer experience. And service design is a great way to create such services.

Banking Disruption in Financial Services: Threats and OpportunitiesDogTelligent
There are three forces shaping the future of banking. Technology innovation is the first. For most traditional financial institutions -- banks and credit unions -- technology innovation is a weakness; instead, they rely on third-party firms ranging from established core providers to startups to provide them with a mix of products that they repackage and resell to their customers. Demographics is the second force. Millennials now account for 25% of the US population with 80 million and growing. The third force is the emergence of new business models on the one hand driven by Millennial demand and communication preferences, and on the other, enabled by new technologies as they are invented.
The report examines data from multiple sources and suggests potential defenses for institutions to fend off competitive threats from technology, retail, and telecom firms that are gaining traction in the payments and banking arenas.

The financial services industry is influx. Banks are being disrupted in both consumer and business services, while algorithms continue to replace people across the financial services industry creating opportunities for new entrants.
This Seminar will initiate a reflection regarding the extent to which innovation within the Financial Technology (FinTech) sector can and should be regulated.

This will be complemented by introducing an Asian perspective as to the capacity of specific jurisdictions to frame and catalyse innovation, focusing on specific challenges and opportunities in Mainland China and Hong Kong.

Which societies are going cashless, and what models are they adopting? How can technology support governments, consumers and merchants in going cashless?
The millennial and data-driven (r)evolution of fintechGuy Turner
What does gassing your car at night have to do with getting a loan? Everything we do is now trackable, creating new data sources for underwriting. Meanwhile a cashless and shared economy are disaggregating major asset purchase (cars, houses) for millennials. The old bait and hook of credit cards as an entry to car and mortgage debt is no longer a winning combo for banks to tap the young generation. In short, the consumer fintech value chain is a deck of cards thrown and now cascading to the ground. What are startups doing to slip into this reshuffle, and where are banks still advantaged?

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Banking Innovation: New Ways of Treating Customer Data
We have already realized that just giving access to existing data isn’t what the market needs.. what is needed is the
availability of value-added services provided by APIs – and powerful APIs that can be used by not just our customers, but
by service providers to reach their end-customers.
- Stefan Weiss, Fidor Bank
Fintech’s are using data in very creative ways around behavior. They’re bringing in all kinds of nontraditional data, like
social platform data. We’ve been doing this too, but in order to tackle fraud, and not to reshape the business. I think there
are things for us to learn from fintech, and there will be places where partnering with them will make perfect sense.
- Steve Ellis, Wells Fargo
Banks should look at innovating more with the data they have, and the fintech industry should produce solutions
around this.
- Ruth Wandhofer, Citibank
Creating value out of customer data is a crucial step. Also, the notion of authentication. The banks have a robust KYC,
and they know who the customers are. They have really solid methods of identifying customers. If we take that and make it
even stronger, with biometrics and other technologies as they evolve, we can make it easier for customers to do things
with the bank, and others.
