- Thelma is not a great friend. She cons Frances out of money to buy a teaset. Frances cons her back. Great to read if kids start using money amongst themselves…
- Mama gets a job selling and making quilts. The family has to pitch in and help because Mama has less time to be a mama. Great book to read when kids need to learn about helping with chores and balance in the household.
- Brother and Sister want cool jackets. They get obsessed with earning money. Great book to read when kids get caught up in earning money.
- After a fire destroyed their home, a family pitches in to save for a chair. They save in a jar. When the jar is full, they take it to the bank for cash. Sometimes saving money takes a long time and require sacrifice.
- Kids open a lemonade stand in winter with an investment of 6 dollars. Using a variety of selling techniques they manage to clear 4.00. They don’t really go into supply and demands, but there’s a great explanation of coins in the back.
- Young boy wants shoes that everyone else has. He and his grandmother find a pair in a thrift shop but they are too small, but they buy them anyway. He gives the shoes to a needy friend who has smaller feet. Luckily, his grandmother had also bought him new boots, which he needed when the snow started to fall. Good book to read when thinking about need vs. want.
- Check out books. Talk about fines and fees and have children be responsible for paying for their fines. Teach children to be responsible for their library card. Many libraries have computers with games and apps on them…find the ones that have to do with Financial Literacy.
- Have a robust collection of books on Financial Literacy and know what they are. Have programs where students can read off fines so they can take responsibility for their fines. Have Financial Literacy Programs for kids…you can do this in conjunction with Money Smart Week. Have financial literacy games or apps available on computers. Add financial literacy components to your summer reading programs.
