technology in our lives

• Frankenstein turns 200 in 2018!

COMMUNITY READ GRANTS
• Design and implement a series of 3 or more programs in 2018
• At least one program is a book discussion
• Other programs up to you!
• Read-alongs
• Speakers
• Film + discussion
• Creative writing workshops
• Mock trails
• Scientific experiments
• Or…?
WHAT WILL INDIANA HUMANITIES PROVIDE?
• $1,000 grant (does not need to be matched)
• Up to 50 copies of Frankenstein
• Swag (tattoos, buttons, posters, bookmarks, etc.)
• Detailed program guide
• Speakers bureau
IMPORTANT NOTES:
• Host orgs help collect and send back evaluation
• 60 grants available
HOW TO APPLY
• Open to any tax-exempt org in Indiana
• Share your program plans
• We recommend a short paragraph per program
• The more detail the better, though you can still add or adapt ideas after program is
awarded
• Tell us about your community and how the Community Read fits with your
goals
• Tell us how many books you need
• All programs should be completed by the end of 2018
• Applications due on Halloween; notification by December 1
FRANKENFEST GRANTS
• Design and implement your own Frankenstein readathon and festival!
• Take your inspiration from our Frankenfest on Sept. 30
• Must include a readathon of the full book (8+ hours)
• Can incorporate live performances, talks, art activities, food and drinks
IMPORTANT NOTES:
• Host orgs help collect and send back evaluation
• 10 grants available
WHAT WILL INDIANA HUMANITIES PROVIDE?
• $1,000 grant (does not need to be matched)
• Training workshop for up to four members of your planning team
• Friday, January 19 in Indianapolis
• Required attendance by project director
• Travel covered by Indiana Humanities
• Starter kit of swag and promotional goodies
• Design and communications support
• Help customizing signage, fliers, etc.
• Logos and templates
HOW TO APPLY
• Open to any tax-exempt organization
• Applications due on Halloween, notification by December 1
• Tell us about your community and why you want to host a read-a-thon
• Tell us your program ideas—the more detail, the better
• Tell us about your team and what they’ll be doing
• Do not need a date, but if you have it, share; must take place by end of 2018
• Required training workshop: mark your calendars now!

• Experts and scholars ready to come to your community to deliver a compelling
talk or workshop
• Gives your community access to high-quality scholarship and the latest
thinking about this amazing book
• Crimes Against Humanity? Where Does The Gavel Fall For Morality And Science In
Frankenstein?
• Frankenslam! Where The Poetry Is Alive! It’s Alive!
• Frankenstein & Jurassic Park: Two Tales Of Scientific Misdeeds
• Stitched & Bound: Frankenstein And The Book
• Most talks last 60 minutes (including time for Q&A)
• Full catalogue posted online; new talks added occasionally
HOW TO BOOK A SPEAKER
• Contact speaker using info listed in the catalogue
• Can do this now or after grant is awarded
• Arrange a mutually agreeable date and time
• Use template agreement letter to put details in writing
• $400 honorarium (standard)
• Offer to cover travel
• Pay speaker directly from Community Read grant
• Speakers can be booked by others not doing a Community Read
• Send date to Indiana Humanities as part of Event Calendar Form (December-
January)

  • 4. TODAY’S GOALS • Explain One State/One Story: Frankenstein • Overview of funding and program resources from Indiana Humanities • Give tips for how to prepare a successful application • Share program ideas and other helpful hints • Get you SUPER excited to bring Frankenstein to life!

  • 7. WHY FRANKENSTEIN? • Frankenstein helps us think and talk about the role of science and technology in our lives • What’s exciting about technological change? What’s scary? • Just because we can do something, should we? • Frankenstein turns 200 in 2018! • How has the book inspired creative people over time? • How has the story been interpreted and/or retold over time? • What’s the backstory of this remarkable book? • Frankenstein opens up many other important conversations • How we treat people who are different • The hidden stories of women in STEM • Frankenstein is a lot of fun—and very surprising!
  • 8. PROGRAM + GRANT OPPORTUNITIES • Community Read Grants • Frankenfest Grants • Frankenstein Speakers Bureau • Novel Conversations book sets • Digital Gaming Workshop • Weekend Retreat • And more…!
  • 9. COMMUNITY READ GRANTS • Design and implement a series of 3 or more programs in 2018 • At least one program is a book discussion • Other programs up to you! • Read-alongs • Speakers • Film + discussion • Creative writing workshops • Mock trails • Scientific experiments • Or…?

WHAT WILL INDIANA HUMANITIES PROVIDE? • $1,000 grant (does not need to be matched) • Up to 50 copies of Frankenstein • Swag (tattoos, buttons, posters, bookmarks, etc.) • Detailed program guide • Speakers bureau IMPORTANT NOTES: • Host orgs help collect and send back evaluation • 60 grants available

HOW TO APPLY • Open to any tax-exempt org in Indiana • Share your program plans • We recommend a short paragraph per program • The more detail the better, though you can still add or adapt ideas after program is awarded • Tell us about your community and how the Community Read fits with your goals • Tell us how many books you need • All programs should be completed by the end of 2018 • Applications due on Halloween; notification by December 1

FRANKENFEST GRANTS • Design and implement your own Frankenstein readathon and festival! • Take your inspiration from our Frankenfest on Sept. 30 • Must include a readathon of the full book (8+ hours) • Can incorporate live performances, talks, art activities, food and drinks IMPORTANT NOTES: • Host orgs help collect and send back evaluation • 10 grants available
  • 13. WHAT WILL INDIANA HUMANITIES PROVIDE? • $1,000 grant (does not need to be matched) • Training workshop for up to four members of your planning team • Friday, January 19 in Indianapolis • Required attendance by project director • Travel covered by Indiana Humanities • Starter kit of swag and promotional goodies • Design and communications support • Help customizing signage, fliers, etc. • Logos and templates

HOW TO APPLY • Open to any tax-exempt organization • Applications due on Halloween, notification by December 1 • Tell us about your community and why you want to host a read-a-thon • Tell us your program ideas—the more detail, the better • Tell us about your team and what they’ll be doing • Do not need a date, but if you have it, share; must take place by end of 2018 • Required training workshop: mark your calendars now!

FRANKENSTEIN SPEAKERS BUREAU • Experts and scholars ready to come to your community to deliver a compelling talk or workshop • Gives your community access to high-quality scholarship and the latest thinking about this amazing book • Crimes Against Humanity? Where Does The Gavel Fall For Morality And Science In Frankenstein? • Frankenslam! Where The Poetry Is Alive! It’s Alive! • Frankenstein & Jurassic Park: Two Tales Of Scientific Misdeeds • Stitched & Bound: Frankenstein And The Book • Most talks last 60 minutes (including time for Q&A) • Full catalogue posted online; new talks added occasionally

HOW TO BOOK A SPEAKER • Contact speaker using info listed in the catalogue • Can do this now or after grant is awarded • Arrange a mutually agreeable date and time • Use template agreement letter to put details in writing • $400 honorarium (standard) • Offer to cover travel • Pay speaker directly from Community Read grant • Speakers can be booked by others not doing a Community Read • Send date to Indiana Humanities as part of Event Calendar Form (December- January)
