Permeability Resistance of Concrete Using Local Materials
1. Permeability Resistance of Normal Strength Concrete
Using Locally Available Materials
DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE Results
Compressive Strength
.
CONCLUSION
SWAT (Short Term)
• Checking permeability resistance of different strength
concrete subjected to different curing conditions.
• Relationship between the surface and ultimate water
depths in the concrete
• Comparison of ultimate and surface water absorption
results by adding different pore blocking chemicals and
polymer emulsion in the samples.
• Relating the short term water absorption results with long
term sorpitivity test results to tell after how much time
water could reach to the reinforcement.

Surface Water Absorption Test Apparatus
(SWAT)
Samples Attached for the Testing
• Permeability of concrete is very important to check its
durability.
• Different Strength and curing condition concrete are used to
check durability of concrete
• Surface Water Absorption Test (SWAT) is used to check
durability of covercrete. This short term (10-Minutes) test is
related with the Ultimate Water Absorption Test.
• Using Ultimate (Long Term) Test and Short term water
absorption it can be stated that in how much time water will
take to reach to reinforcement.
• Graphs Show the Short term water absorption results and
concrete is classified based on its permeability.
* Zero, 7, 14, 28 Days are showing the curing period
• The Concrete having different strengths and subjected to different curing
conditions are classified based on surface water absorption test (SWAT)
• Those samples which are having the more value of “a “ and “waf “are
considered as more permeable concrete.
• And conversely if the value of “n” is less then the concrete is said to be good
against water permeability.
• From the results as the curing period and strength are increasing the concrete is
becoming less permeable.
• Similarly in case of relationship between “n” and “a” as the value of “n” is
increasing keeping “a” value constant the concrete start becoming permeable.
• Therefore, the samples having less strength and less curing period are worse,
less strength but good curing period are better and high strength and more
curing period are best.
