Fall 2013

FINAL PROJECT
General:
Your final project is to be inspired by one of the three plays listed below. You must use
all three of these subjects as well as take into account some of the visual elements of
design and the principles of composition. You then will present to class your design and
as well as defend how you think used the given elements and principles.
Do not select a play you have seen or read before. If you select a play you have
seen/read/listened to/attended/etc., you will receive a zero on your final project, and have
to do it again with a new subject. If you have seen all of the following plays, please
contact Olivia Hancock ASAP.
1. Rhinoceros by Eugene Ionesco
2. The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde
3. Our Town by Thornton Wilder
The Problem:
Imagine yourself as the Artistic Director for Radio City Music Hall. You need to create
the poster for a new production. You must be familiar with the play, which means that if
you have not yet read the play, you will need to. Do not watch a production of the play, as
doing so will consciously or unconsciously will put ideas into your head about what your
design “is supposed to look like.” The objective in this project, as with most design
projects in theatre, is to come up with your own unique artistic ideas. Use what you
know about the play as well as what we have learned about the elements of design and
the principles of composition to create your poster. On exam day you will present your
play verbally as well as in written form, defending how you believe you have
accomplished this assignment.
Part A of your final assignment is to design a poster.
1. The poster must use at least 4 of the elements of design.
a. Point
b. Line
c. Shape
d. Volume
e. Color and Texture
2. As you design this project use all the principles of composition.
a. Composition
b. Unity and Variety
c. Balance
d. Emphasis
e. Continuity
f. Proportion
3. You must choose one of the color harmonies on which to base your design.
4. You will present the Cover on the full 9” x 12” Kyd finish Bristol board.
5. Do not forget to have the following information on your poster. It might be
helpful to look up theatre posters (from different shows, do not look up posters
from the play you selected) on google images to see how different people have
placed the following information to help spur on your ideas. However, do not just
copy someone else’s layout. Be creative:
a.
b.
c.
d.

Title
Author
Who’s Producing it (The New Covenant Players)
The name and address of the theatre where it is located (Any famous
theatre, past or present, that you want)
e. Performance dates
f. Ticket prices
g. Contact information
6. The title of the play and your name you will be listed NEATLY on the back of the
board.
Part B of your assignment is to write a short speech (verbal presentation) describing
and supporting your project.
7. The paper has 2 parts. The first is your pitch to your client. The second is a
defense of how you feel you used the Elements of Design and Principles of
Composition.
8. You must clearly list at the top left hand part of the first page, your name the
class, and my name.
9. You must list clearly on the top left of the first page, your 3 random elements.
10. You must choose and place a title on the top center of the paper.
11. You will present to the class in two separate parts. First your pitch to the clients
and second your defense of your use of principle and elements.
12. The text of the presentation must be typed and submitted at time of presentation.
Handwritten “monologues” will be devalued a full letter grade.
