As for the Introduction of this site, the word Rosary has its meaning that is “Crown of
Roses” where the lady has revealed to several people that each time they say a Hail Mary
they are giving her a beautiful rose and that each complete Rosary makes her a crown of
roses. The rose is the queen of flowers, and so the Rosary is the rose of all devotions and it
is therefore the most important one.

Architecture
The Church of Holy Rosary is a Catholic church that was founded by a person that
goes by the name of Father Francis Emile Terrien, a frenchman. In 1903, Father Lambert
was the head of the Catholic Chinese community that was based in Kuala Lumpur and, with
assistance from Father Lambert, constucted a new church.
On November of 1904, constuction of the churh had been completed. The church,
however, at the time, did not look the way it does today. Instead, it had a flat roof and up
until 1950, the wings were non-existent. The renovations that were made by Father Moses
Koh in 1950 was what made the building look the way it does today.
The architectural style of the building is inspired by gothic architecture, an
architectural style that was most popular during the medival era, which was roughly from the
13th century up to the 16th century. This was a very architectural style, particularly for
churches and castles in the European regions.
Gothic architecture was founded due to the limitations of building skills during the
10th and 11th centuries. Gothi architecture was founded to create building that were light,
airy as well as maintaining a pleasant atmosphere.
The following are several characteristics of The Holy Rosary Church that can be
used to identify whether it is of gothic architecture.
1. The first would be the fact that the bulding was designed to with tall, grandeuristic
designs. Gothic architecture had tall, grandeur buildings due to the introduction of the use of
stone during that time. With the stone's abilty to withstand great weights, architects during
the time were able to take advantage of stone's properties and make designs that had
immense height.
2. The second characteristic would be the use of pointed arches. This was done to buildings
with gothic architecture to dirstibute the weight of the much heavier building. The use of this
technique allowed more height to be added to the building's designs, which explains The
Holy Rosary Church's tall facade.
3. The next characteristic would be the use of vaulted ceilings. Much like the pointed arches,
vaulted cielings have the same science behind its use. This allowed more weight to be
added on the top and provided better weight distribution.
4. Another characteristic would be the implementation of a light and airy interior. The use of
a large number of windows and tall ceilings was implemented in the interior of The Holy
Rosary's Church.
5. Other than that, the use of gargoyles are also an indication of gothic architecture. It can be
seen from the main tower of The Holy Rosary Church that some gargoyles were used in the
9
designs. In the Victorian era, hoever, these gargoyles were used as spouts, mechanisms
that enable rainwater to flow off the roof. The implementation of this design was purely for
aestethical values as the image of water flowing out of the gargoyles' mouths create nice
designs during the rain.
6. Lastly, it would be the emphasis of decorative elements, such as stained glass and
ornaments. The Holy Rosary's Church had stained glass thoughout the building. Ornaments
could also be seen both on the interior and exterior of the building. One of the ornaments
that stood out were the rose ornaments on the top of the pillars surrounding the side
entrances of the church, indicating its specific respect to Rosary.
10
Technology Implied
The Holy Rosary Church implements a wide array of technology in the construction
of both the church itself as well as the nearby school situated behind it. As it was established
during the early 20th century, prior to the very first world war, the construction technology
differs greatly than the one that we use today despite some similarities.
Since the second industrial revolution, plenty of technology was founded since that
period and hence a small crane was used in the construction of the chapel itself as it is quite
tall. Apart from that, scaffolding were used for both the construction of the church and the
school as they are both multi-leveled. Lastly, prefabrication was also implemented in their
construction. Prefabrication is the process in which materials were fabricated beforehand
before being transported to the site. The prefabrication of concrete was used in the
construction of this church. The workers themselves were also decked out in safety gear
relevant to the time they lived in.
11
Research Findings
Materials Used
The Holy Rosary Church was built and completed in November 1904. It was mainly
built by using concrete. The elements that are constructed using concrete include the
external and internal walls, whereas the floor is finished by cement rendering and then
furnished with mosaic floor tiles. Cement is a substance used in construction that sets and
hardens and can bind other materials together. For example, cement can be mixed with
aggregates and water to form concrete. Cement is known as a very long-lasting building
material. That is why it can last even after a century.
On the other hand, this building was built with bricks as well. Bricks are hard and
durable, and have compressive strength which is good enough for ordinary construction. The
important thing is that they have a very low maintenance cost. Furthermore, demolishing of
brick structures is very easy and less time consuming. It is reusable and can be recycle, in
addition its produces less environmental pollution during manufacturing process.
Timber is used for the furniture, roof trusses, windows frame, column decorates and
also wooden doors. Whereas outside the wooden door there is another metal gate for safety
purpose. The church also used metal door (figure 1) besides wooden door. The outer part of
the building is also designed with some concrete flowers (figure 2) to lighten up the church.
As designed to adapt to the temperature of Malaysia, air vents can be found on the
wall of the church. It allows air circulation within the church as wind can ventilate easily. Air
(wind) can move freely into and out of the building through these air vents, thus reducing the
heat that might accumulate inside the building.
This church has shown an excellent architecture with amazing stained glass feature
of Saints (figure 3), scenes from Bible are displayed on the glass as well. Each panel shows
the themes of Rosary in narrative way with elegant arrangement of figure.
Throughout the years, few building materials were being replaced by different types
of materials. For example, when Holy Rosary Church was first constructed, the ceiling is
made of timber ceiling. However, it was later changed to plaster vaulting (figure 4). Instead
of using beams to connect the structures, plaster vaulted ceiling depends on the rib vault to
connect each other at their respective intersection points. Plaster vaulted ceiling gives more
head makes the church look more spacious and require less maintenance compared to
timber ceiling. Other than the ceiling, the roofing material is changed from original flat roof to
pitched gable roof (figure 5). With pitched roof and vaulted ceiling, it lifted the overall
headroom of the interior of the church.

Architecture style
The architecture style of the Holy Rosary church is Gothic architecture style. It is a style
of architecture that flourished during the high and late medieval period. It evolved
from Romanesque architecture and was succeeded by Renaissance architecture. The
Gothic style most commonly features on the church are arc high windows, steeple and
emphasis on vertical design concept.
Exterior
The church added new feature after the restoration in 1955 that represented Gothic
style elements of a church which adapted from the England Gothic style architecture. New
feature was added like wings on both side and aisles and altar. Beside that, the flat roof of
Holy Rosary Church wasrestored with a pitch gable roof.
Moreover, the modern features such as air vents can be seen below the geometrical
tracery of aisle window in order to enhance the air circulation inside the church. Besides that,
the windows around the church had an opening cover made up of timber, like louvers and
steel grills. It wasdesigned specially in correspond of the hot climate weather in Malaysia.
The architecture elements of Gothic can be also seen in this church is the steeple on the
highest part of the bell tower. The steeple is surrounded by the 4 cross shape finials by the
sides. The lantern is just located at the bottom of the center projecting bell tower. Two
pinnacles were place at both side of the exterior facade. Lancet windows with geometrical
tracery were well arranged on the top of the main entrance of the church. In order to enter
the church, people will need to pass through the lancet doors. For the side transepts of the
church, also act as a side entrance into the church. Another Gothic elements such as the
triangular parapet can be seen on the top roof and followed by drop cornice molding
surrounded by the side. On the below are three clerestory windows and the bottom entrance
is where the lancet doors with pointed arch were constructed.

Interior
In the interior of the Holy Rosary Church, there are also existing of statues that serve as
a decorations at the side along each column. The statues symbolize the disciples of
Jesus. The statues and the exterior facade are in white color to symbolize its pureness and
holiness.
The existing of clerestory window alongthe side of aisle is made of stained glass with
figured drawing in it. Each windows shows the themes of Rosary in narrative way with
eleganceand meaningful arrangement of figure. Besides that, the tinted glasses also
enhance the details of the church and create a heavenly effect for the interior space.
On the upper part of the church, there are three rose windows that made of colorful
stained glasses. The pattern of the rose window contains only six petals each.In addition, the
28 sets of stained glass panels were added to represent 20 mysteries of the Rosary for the
centennial celebration. These projects of installation of stained glass panels was carry out
due to considered about the original old wooden louvers and window frame were found to be
infested by termites. During the construction, the chairperson and committee focuses on the
details in overall image, design, word fonts, uses of colors and pattern for different section.
The aisle windows were placed below the clerestory window, where it provides enough
natural sunlight to penetrate in.
The entrance door to the interior space of the church was made to a smaller size to
create a effect of entering into a larger and wider space. This also means to classify the
hierarchy of human and god, also to encourage respect from the parishioner to their god.

Travel Journal

We did go The Holy Rosary Church which it located at Jalan Tun Sambanthan,
Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at 16 april 2016, Saturday. At
1pm we gather at Taylor Lakeside Campus. Then we go by groupmate car. So our 2
groupmate did go walk around and find out the way to the church is just the junction beside
where are we. There got groupmates was go to church by themselves because their home is
just so near from the church.
After we arrive the church we did go find the management office to asking permission
to let us go in the church to taking picture. But the management of the church say we can’t
take picture of the interior of the church. So we start to take picture of the exterior of the
church. We take the details of their columns, the window style they use at that 100 years ago
to built the church, the unique roof and the surrounding of the church. We also did go around
and asking those people who work in the church about the story of the church.
We did observe the exterior church and the surrounding until around 4pm. Before we
dismiss, we did see the inside of the church when they open their door just before we
dismiss because they got having a talk for woman at 4pm in the church. Because they didn’t
let us to take picture inside the church, so we take the interior of the church at outside of the
church. We also did take fews of group photos for momento. We did dismiss at 4.30pm way
back to Taylor University with our groupmate car.
Our groupmate, Muhammad Areeb Bin Amirullah can’t join this journey because his
grandfather suddenly pass away at the lately morning of the day we go visit the church
because of heart attack. He have to go back to his hometown, Johor Bahru. Because this all
happen so suddenly and we already can’t change the date of site visit already, so we go to
site without him. After the site visit we did share our information to him about the Holy
Rosary Church.
Through this journey, I did learn about the architecture style they use to built the church. The
design and the detailing really did impressing to me. They did built the church with very
detailing structure especially the roof that strongly representing the chinese civilization and
christian culture. And did learn and see something that we can’t learn in class. Because I am
the leader of this group, I did improved my leadership skill. I did learn to stay calm to solve
the problem that suddenly happen. And I did learn how to plan a journey and distributing the
work to groupmate to avoid all groupmate doing things repeatly and manage our time wisely.
I also did learn how to work in a groupwork. To work in a groupwork, we need tolerance
each other, have responsibility to our part of work and cooperation with other groupmate.

The historical site that we had chosen for our group is Holy Rosary Church that was
located in Kuala Lumpur. This is my first time visiting the church although I stayed in Kuala
Lumpur since I was born. We went to the site at 16 April 2016 together with our members. I
am thrilled to visit the church as I could not imagine how it looks in real life. Some of the
members gathered at Taylors before going to the church, but I went there on my own
because the church is quite near to my house.
The church was impressive for my first glance and even attracts me more when I
know more about it through the description of the person in charge there. He is friendly and
tell us that we could just walk around the church to do our research work. We observed the
site and jot down details about the historical elements of it according to what we had
discussed before.
In this journey, I learnt that we should find more information before heading to the
site so we will know what to take photo of and not just randomly stroll around. Next, I should
be more aware to the details of the historical buildings so that I pay attention to it when I am
on site. Teamwork is also what makes the site visit possible. Everyone needs to contribute to
the group and do their respective task accordingly so that the project can be done smoothly.

On 16 April 2016, our team members met up at around 1pm and carpooled to our
destination, Holy Rosary Church, which is located at Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Kuala Lumpur.
The distance is approximately 20km and it took us around 50 minutes to arrive to the
destination.
It was not an easy task to gather everyone to go for the site visit as everyone has
their own schedule and is busy. It was unfortunate to have gone to the site with the absence
of one of the members as he has urgent family matter. Other than that, I have tried to
contact the church few times before to ask for permission to visit, however, I was not able to
reach them through phone.
Thus, as soon as we reached the church, we went to ask for the permission of a lady
in the church. Unfortunately, we were not able to enter the church before the mass time, thus
we were only able to observe the interior of the church outside the door, and walk around the
church to see its exterior structure.
All the team member took photos of the building, with careful observation of details
on the architecture. I was amazed by how detailed the building is designed. Every part of the
building represents its own meaning such as statues that symbolizes God in Christ,
clerestory window which is made of stained glass with figured drawing on it, and each panel
shows the themes of Rosary in narrative way. It was very interesting to me.
Through the site visit, I have learned the importance of reserving historical building. It
is because the people of our past generations have reserved it well that us, and the
upcoming generations, can see and appreciate the beauty of this historical building with our
own eyes. Other than that, I also learned that teamwork is important for completing a task, it
is with everyone’s effort of wanting to accomplish the assignment on time that we were able
to visit the site without great difficulties where members with transport volunteer themselves
to fetch those without transport.

16th April 2016 (Saturday)
On this day, we were supposed to meet at the university at 1pm, and head to the
church together in a car, things didn’t turn out according to plan so i had to head to the Holy
Rosary Church by my own transportation which was the LRT.
Prior to my arrival at station in Subang Jaya, I missed the train that arrived at that
time. With that I had to wait for another train, which was a dreadful 10 minute. This reminded
me of how important time management was. When the train finally arrived it takes at least 25
minutes before I reached the KL Sentral.
The duration of the ride from KL Sentral to the Holy Rosary Church was supposed to
be around 5-9 minutes, but the traffic slowed it down to 25 minutes. I finally arrive at the
church and I could see that my group of friends were waiting for me behind the church.
I apologised to them for the delay and we started on our work. In a glance, the
exterior of the church was magnificent, tall stone structures and intricate details, I was in awe.
I arrived 15 minutes late, despite the scorching weather, my group mates were patient with
me which I am deeply grateful for.
We took pictures of the exterior of the church as well as our group photos and
discussed about our parts. Opinions, thoughts and discussions were also passed around
about the church, as well as how we could improve our research and findings. After that, we
shared our knowledge and opinions about the church and what we thought of it.
As we weren’t allowed into the church till 4pm, we had to wait outside and make the
most of what we had. While we were finally allowed to enter the church, we took as many
pictures as we could, we also asked the people who managed the church a few questions.
Overall, I’ve learnt that teamwork and cooperation is the most important thing in order
for a group project to work. I’ve also learnt my lessons with time management, when one
person is late, the consequences are that the whole group had to be pulled back in terms of
time and productivity.

This assignment consist us to be in a group of 10 members which combine with
architecture students and quantity surveyor students, while we have 7 members of
architecture students and 3 quantity surveyor students. However, before going to the site
that we have chosen, we have already separated our own research so that each of us know
what to do and what to focus on, in case of missing out something.
Then we have another meeting in the library to decide which date and time to go for
a site visit. Through discussion we have decided to go for a site visit on 16 APRIL 2016
(Saturday), and we gather at 1pm in campus. Futhermore, we arrived the church around
2pm. When I first arrived the church, I saw a beautiful design Gothic architecture and
surrounded by high rise buildings. Moreover, they have an amazing stained glass feature on
it and the exterior building is made out of concrete and also decorated some concrete
flowers to lighten up the building.
Therefore, this is a Catholic church known as the ‘’Holy Rosary Church ’’and also an
old building over 100 years with an extremely beautiful one with unique architecture, located
in the heart of the city. While everyone is discussing their research, noted down all the
details, taking pictures of the building and after we have done everything we took a group
photo in front of the church. Besides, there is quite a lot of obstacles on that day which the
church was having a talk. But there’s nothing extraordinary happen during the journey,
everything just went fine.
Although the weather on that day is very hot but worth it. This is a must visit place! I
really enjoyed this journey with my groupmates and also thank you to my lecturer to assign
us to do this assignment which I learnt more about historical building and teamwork. If
there’s another chance to visit back this church or other historical buildings, I would really
enjoy the journey again.

After discussing within our group, we have decided to choose Holy Rosary Church as
our historical significant building. The Holy Rosary Church is a catholic church with its
original façade of high ornaments and structures which makes the building historically
significant.
On 16th April 2016, we gathered at the university before leaving to the Holy Rosary
Church which was located in Brickfields at 1pm. We left to the church together and it took
around half an hour to reach our destination. Along the way, we discussed and divided out
our work among ourselves so that we would know what to research on after the trip.
At the church, we looked around the area first and took pictures of the façade. As the
church is more towards a properly dressed and managed church, we had to get permission
before entering the church to get a glimpse of the interior. However, we were not allowed
into the church until after 4pm after their weekend activity.
While waiting for their weekend activity to end, we looked around the place and tried
to ask the people around for information about the church. We did not manage to get much
information about the architecture of the church but they explained more about general
information about the church. We waited until 4 to take a look inside the church then took a
group photo and left back to the university.
I think that this is one of the few remaining original state of the art churches in Kuala
Lumpur. Most churches around this area are usually in normal buildings such as the FGA
church instead of a church with this façade. Understanding the elements of architecture
styles used in churches like the Holy Rosary Church shows how fusion takes place in
architectural styles in churches here in Malaysia.
It was an elegant and historically significant building to study on.

The journey started in the morning and ended later in the afternoon. On the way to
the site, some members encountered a few problems regarding transport and etc. After a
few discussions, we managed to resolve the transportation problems and continued our
journey. Some members went individually whereas others carpooled.
After we arrived on site, we weren’t allowed in as the church was being prepared for
an event later in the evening. And so, we walked around and took pictures that were related
to the assignment. After that, we walked around to the back, where it looked as if a school
was located. Personally, I was unaware that churches had schools or homes within the area
and thought that churches were only places of worship. Around the school-like area, we
encountered a person who seemed to have some sort of connection with the church; much
like a member. He was nice enough to let us in the church to take a few pictures of the
interior and provided some much needed information regarding the church itself.
At the end of the journey, I learnt that a church was not only a place of worship, but
also a place for education and, for some, a shelter. I also learnt to communicate better with
my group members through the ups and downs throughout the journey.

Due to my absenthies on the 16th of April because of family emergencies, I have
decided to go on my own with the same schedule as them. So I went on my own the next
week itself on the 23rd of April, I got ready at 12pm because I was pretty excited to see of
how beautiful it was after ive heard from them saying their architecture its beautiful as it
seem it might be. Whatever it is I came out from the house and started driving to Kuala
Lumpur. And somehow I don’t care less of the jam in Kuala Lumpur as it seems like im pretty
used to the jam from Damansara to Taylors University.
As I arrived there it was beautiful as what my group members have told me, and it t
somehow it pretty weird for me as Muslim Person to go into a church, it was my 1st time
going into a church, and it somehow how a place where people gather every Sunday to have
their prayers still amazes me. The people who took care of church seems friendly and they
accept me as Muslim person to go into a church. Whatever it is, ive waited till 430 till they let
us go in, where my religion lets us go in anytime we want in our Holy Mosque. But lastly, I
was scared to go in alone at that time, so ive decided to just walks around the church. I was
pretty amazed of how beautiful the church because it is the architectural is from French
Gothiic Revival style.
What I have learnt from this place, is that how it amazes me where one place can be
built at 1903 and still look as beautiful as it seems even its been there before Malaysia was a
free country. Ive also learn that this places it’s still used by the people around and what a
place can be amazing where multiples can cry and e happy at a place like this. this place of
worship still majestically stands on it’s ground as it’s being squeezed by high-rise buildings
on it’s both sides. Ive also learned that this places does teach how to be more disciplined in
life as where people will eventually be quite when they are inside and how they greet each
other. Its beautifully crafted stained windows depicting episodes from the holy bible
My journey ends at that place was when I heard some thunders and the cloud was
getting darker and darker, From this moment ive known that I should rush into my car who is
just parked nearby before the rain start pouring heavily. The historical background at this
place it is built in 1903 by Father Francis Emile Terrien, a French missionary and he was
constructed by Father Lambert.

On the midday of the 16th
of April, as soon as the bell tolled at 2, all of us departed
from Taylor’s University and headed for our site, The Holy Rosary Church, which was
situated in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur. 5 of my groupmates carpooled together in 1 car, which
belonged to A’ameer, or at least I assumed it was, as he was driving it. I on the other hand,
drove there myself, as I had my own car. Melanie decided to take the KTM and meet us
there, whilst 2 of the remaining groupmates, Michelle and Madeline who didn’t gather with us
beforehand opt to meet us at the site themselves as they lived nearby.
All of us arrived at the site at 3 in the afternoon. Once we were all there, we decided
to take multiple pictures of the church all at different angles and viewpoints. The church was
really a sight to behold as I had never seen a church with gothic architecture up close and
personal before in my entire 19 years of living. We also asked the church organisers as well
as their staffs about the history and activities that are carried out by the church.
Unfortunately, the pastor wasn’t there during the duration we visited and as such, we could
not inquire him. There was also a school situated behind the church as well as apartments. I
had a blast visiting the many areas of the church and I’m sure my groupmates felt the same.
After two hours of taking pictures and inquiring people, we finally decided to take a
group picture together. All of us gathered in front of the church and asked Melanie’s friend to
take a picture of us. Soon after, all of us departed from the site and headed our separate
ways.
29
Conclusion
The reason why we choose the Holy Church are because of how inspiring the
architecture of the building itself, although is not well know, it is one of the oldest building
located in Kuala Lumpur. This building is worth a look at is has a French Gothic Revival
style and it serves mainly Chinese Catholic congregation.
What we have learned is that being in a group of 10 is not easy when theres no
commitment, teamwork and leadership. What we could say, our group have all that
characteristics. We could say its easy for us to work as a group with everyone have given
their full commitment on. We have also learned that, it is not easy to complete this
assignment, it requires a strong physicaland mental while completing it.
We have also learned that everything that is being build in this city have being
significant towards the country and their historical background are much appreciated and
should also be known more towards the others people. An old building have are being
uphold practically have their main reasons towards the country and mainly are because the
people who built and their architecture of the building are being recognized where is it from.
Lastly, we would say that we have lots of fun on completing this assignment, we
have gain a new experience in life. We also have known each other pretty well now and
characteristic of comfortability towards each other are being shown and whats important is
that we have gain lots of new friends.

The rose is the queen of flowers, and so the Rosary is the rose of all devotions and it is therefore the most important one.
  • 8. 8 Architecture The Church of Holy Rosary is a Catholic church that was founded by a person that goes by the name of Father Francis Emile Terrien, a frenchman. In 1903, Father Lambert was the head of the Catholic Chinese community that was based in Kuala Lumpur and, with assistance from Father Lambert, constucted a new church. On November of 1904, constuction of the churh had been completed. The church, however, at the time, did not look the way it does today. Instead, it had a flat roof and up until 1950, the wings were non-existent. The renovations that were made by Father Moses Koh in 1950 was what made the building look the way it does today. The architectural style of the building is inspired by gothic architecture, an architectural style that was most popular during the medival era, which was roughly from the 13th century up to the 16th century. This was a very architectural style, particularly for churches and castles in the European regions. Gothic architecture was founded due to the limitations of building skills during the 10th and 11th centuries. Gothi architecture was founded to create building that were light, airy as well as maintaining a pleasant atmosphere. The following are several characteristics of The Holy Rosary Church that can be used to identify whether it is of gothic architecture. 1. The first would be the fact that the bulding was designed to with tall, grandeuristic designs. Gothic architecture had tall, grandeur buildings due to the introduction of the use of stone during that time. With the stone's abilty to withstand great weights, architects during the time were able to take advantage of stone's properties and make designs that had immense height. 2. The second characteristic would be the use of pointed arches. This was done to buildings with gothic architecture to dirstibute the weight of the much heavier building. The use of this technique allowed more height to be added to the building's designs, which explains The Holy Rosary Church's tall facade. 3. The next characteristic would be the use of vaulted ceilings. Much like the pointed arches, vaulted cielings have the same science behind its use. This allowed more weight to be added on the top and provided better weight distribution. 4. Another characteristic would be the implementation of a light and airy interior. The use of a large number of windows and tall ceilings was implemented in the interior of The Holy Rosary's Church. 5. Other than that, the use of gargoyles are also an indication of gothic architecture. It can be seen from the main tower of The Holy Rosary Church that some gargoyles were used in the
  • 9. 9 designs. In the Victorian era, hoever, these gargoyles were used as spouts, mechanisms that enable rainwater to flow off the roof. The implementation of this design was purely for aestethical values as the image of water flowing out of the gargoyles' mouths create nice designs during the rain. 6. Lastly, it would be the emphasis of decorative elements, such as stained glass and ornaments. The Holy Rosary's Church had stained glass thoughout the building. Ornaments could also be seen both on the interior and exterior of the building. One of the ornaments that stood out were the rose ornaments on the top of the pillars surrounding the side entrances of the church, indicating its specific respect to Rosary.
  • 10. 10 Technology Implied The Holy Rosary Church implements a wide array of technology in the construction of both the church itself as well as the nearby school situated behind it. As it was established during the early 20th century, prior to the very first world war, the construction technology differs greatly than the one that we use today despite some similarities. Since the second industrial revolution, plenty of technology was founded since that period and hence a small crane was used in the construction of the chapel itself as it is quite tall. Apart from that, scaffolding were used for both the construction of the church and the school as they are both multi-leveled. Lastly, prefabrication was also implemented in their construction. Prefabrication is the process in which materials were fabricated beforehand before being transported to the site. The prefabrication of concrete was used in the construction of this church. The workers themselves were also decked out in safety gear relevant to the time they lived in.
  • 11. 11 Research Findings Materials Used The Holy Rosary Church was built and completed in November 1904. It was mainly built by using concrete. The elements that are constructed using concrete include the external and internal walls, whereas the floor is finished by cement rendering and then furnished with mosaic floor tiles. Cement is a substance used in construction that sets and hardens and can bind other materials together. For example, cement can be mixed with aggregates and water to form concrete. Cement is known as a very long-lasting building material. That is why it can last even after a century. On the other hand, this building was built with bricks as well. Bricks are hard and durable, and have compressive strength which is good enough for ordinary construction. The important thing is that they have a very low maintenance cost. Furthermore, demolishing of brick structures is very easy and less time consuming. It is reusable and can be recycle, in addition its produces less environmental pollution during manufacturing process. Timber is used for the furniture, roof trusses, windows frame, column decorates and also wooden doors. Whereas outside the wooden door there is another metal gate for safety purpose. The church also used metal door (figure 1) besides wooden door. The outer part of the building is also designed with some concrete flowers (figure 2) to lighten up the church. As designed to adapt to the temperature of Malaysia, air vents can be found on the wall of the church. It allows air circulation within the church as wind can ventilate easily. Air (wind) can move freely into and out of the building through these air vents, thus reducing the heat that might accumulate inside the building. This church has shown an excellent architecture with amazing stained glass feature of Saints (figure 3), scenes from Bible are displayed on the glass as well. Each panel shows the themes of Rosary in narrative way with elegant arrangement of figure. Throughout the years, few building materials were being replaced by different types of materials. For example, when Holy Rosary Church was first constructed, the ceiling is made of timber ceiling. However, it was later changed to plaster vaulting (figure 4). Instead of using beams to connect the structures, plaster vaulted ceiling depends on the rib vault to connect each other at their respective intersection points. Plaster vaulted ceiling gives more head makes the church look more spacious and require less maintenance compared to timber ceiling. Other than the ceiling, the roofing material is changed from original flat roof to pitched gable roof (figure 5). With pitched roof and vaulted ceiling, it lifted the overall headroom of the interior of the church.

  • 14. 14 Architecture style The architecture style of the Holy Rosary church is Gothic architecture style. It is a style of architecture that flourished during the high and late medieval period. It evolved from Romanesque architecture and was succeeded by Renaissance architecture. The Gothic style most commonly features on the church are arc high windows, steeple and emphasis on vertical design concept. Moreover, the modern features such as air vents can be seen below the geometrical tracery of aisle window in order to enhance the air circulation inside the church. Besides that, the windows around the church had an opening cover made up of timber, like louvers and steel grills. It wasdesigned specially in correspond of the hot climate weather in Malaysia. The architecture elements of Gothic can be also seen in this church is the steeple on the highest part of the bell tower. The steeple is surrounded by the 4 cross shape finials by the sides. The lantern is just located at the bottom of the center projecting bell tower. Two pinnacles were place at both side of the exterior facade. Lancet windows with geometrical tracery were well arranged on the top of the main entrance of the church. In order to enter the church, people will need to pass through the lancet doors. For the side transepts of the church, also act as a side entrance into the church. Another Gothic elements such as the triangular parapet can be seen on the top roof and followed by drop cornice molding surrounded by the side. On the below are three clerestory windows and the bottom entrance is where the lancet doors with pointed arch were constructed.

  • 16. 16 Interior In the interior of the Holy Rosary Church, there are also existing of statues that serve as a decorations at the side along each column. The statues symbolize the disciples of Jesus. The statues and the exterior facade are in white color to symbolize its pureness and holiness. The existing of clerestory window alongthe side of aisle is made of stained glass with figured drawing in it. Each windows shows the themes of Rosary in narrative way with eleganceand meaningful arrangement of figure. Besides that, the tinted glasses also enhance the details of the church and create a heavenly effect for the interior space. On the upper part of the church, there are three rose windows that made of colorful stained glasses. The pattern of the rose window contains only six petals each.In addition, the 28 sets of stained glass panels were added to represent 20 mysteries of the Rosary for the centennial celebration. These projects of installation of stained glass panels was carry out due to considered about the original old wooden louvers and window frame were found to be infested by termites. During the construction, the chairperson and committee focuses on the details in overall image, design, word fonts, uses of colors and pattern for different section. The aisle windows were placed below the clerestory window, where it provides enough natural sunlight to penetrate in. The entrance door to the interior space of the church was made to a smaller size to create a effect of entering into a larger and wider space. This also means to classify the hierarchy of human and god, also to encourage respect from the parishioner to their god. There are alsoadditional Gothic style elements seen from East view Aisle with Stained Glass Entrance Triangular Parapet Lancet Window Drop cornice molding.

  • 19. 19 Travel Journal Lu Chiao Er 0326947 We did go The Holy Rosary Church which it located at Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at 16 april 2016, Saturday. At 1pm we gather at Taylor Lakeside Campus. Then we go by groupmate car. So our 2 groupmate did go walk around and find out the way to the church is just the junction beside where are we. There got groupmates was go to church by themselves because their home is just so near from the church. After we arrive the church we did go find the management office to asking permission to let us go in the church to taking picture. But the management of the church say we can’t take picture of the interior of the church. So we start to take picture of the exterior of the church. We take the details of their columns, the window style they use at that 100 years ago to built the church, the unique roof and the surrounding of the church. We also did go around and asking those people who work in the church about the story of the church. We did observe the exterior church and the surrounding until around 4pm. Before we dismiss, we did see the inside of the church when they open their door just before we dismiss because they got having a talk for woman at 4pm in the church. Because they didn’t let us to take picture inside the church, so we take the interior of the church at outside of the church. We also did take fews of group photos for momento. We did dismiss at 4.30pm way back to Taylor University with our groupmate car. Our groupmate, Muhammad Areeb Bin Amirullah can’t join this journey because his grandfather suddenly pass away at the lately morning of the day we go visit the church because of heart attack. He have to go back to his hometown, Johor Bahru. Because this all happen so suddenly and we already can’t change the date of site visit already, so we go to site without him. After the site visit we did share our information to him about the Holy Rosary Church. Through this journey, I did learn about the architecture style they use to built the church. The design and the detailing really did impressing to me. They did built the church with very detailing structure especially the roof that strongly representing the chinese civilization and christian culture. And did learn and see something that we can’t learn in class. Because I am the leader of this group, I did improved my leadership skill. I did learn to stay calm to solve the problem that suddenly happen. And I did learn how to plan a journey and distributing the work to groupmate to avoid all groupmate doing things repeatly and manage our time wisely. I also did learn how to work in a groupwork. To work in a groupwork, we need tolerance each other, have responsibility to our part of work and cooperation with other groupmate.
  • 20. 20 Madeline Liew Zhi Qi 0322150 The historical site that we had chosen for our group is Holy Rosary Church that was located in Kuala Lumpur. This is my first time visiting the church although I stayed in Kuala Lumpur since I was born. We went to the site at 16 April 2016 together with our members. I am thrilled to visit the church as I could not imagine how it looks in real life. Some of the members gathered at Taylors before going to the church, but I went there on my own because the church is quite near to my house. The church was impressive for my first glance and even attracts me more when I know more about it through the description of the person in charge there. He is friendly and tell us that we could just walk around the church to do our research work. We observed the site and jot down details about the historical elements of it according to what we had discussed before. In this journey, I learnt that we should find more information before heading to the site so we will know what to take photo of and not just randomly stroll around. Next, I should be more aware to the details of the historical buildings so that I pay attention to it when I am on site. Teamwork is also what makes the site visit possible. Everyone needs to contribute to the group and do their respective task accordingly so that the project can be done smoothly.
  • 21. 21 Maybelle Wang Sze Kher 0327553 On 16 April 2016, our team members met up at around 1pm and carpooled to our destination, Holy Rosary Church, which is located at Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Kuala Lumpur. The distance is approximately 20km and it took us around 50 minutes to arrive to the destination. It was not an easy task to gather everyone to go for the site visit as everyone has their own schedule and is busy. It was unfortunate to have gone to the site with the absence of one of the members as he has urgent family matter. Other than that, I have tried to contact the church few times before to ask for permission to visit, however, I was not able to reach them through phone. Thus, as soon as we reached the church, we went to ask for the permission of a lady in the church. Unfortunately, we were not able to enter the church before the mass time, thus we were only able to observe the interior of the church outside the door, and walk around the church to see its exterior structure. All the team member took photos of the building, with careful observation of details on the architecture. I was amazed by how detailed the building is designed. Every part of the building represents its own meaning such as statues that symbolizes God in Christ, clerestory window which is made of stained glass with figured drawing on it, and each panel shows the themes of Rosary in narrative way. It was very interesting to me. Through the site visit, I have learned the importance of reserving historical building. It is because the people of our past generations have reserved it well that us, and the upcoming generations, can see and appreciate the beauty of this historical building with our own eyes. Other than that, I also learned that teamwork is important for completing a task, it is with everyone’s effort of wanting to accomplish the assignment on time that we were able to visit the site without great difficulties where members with transport volunteer themselves to fetch those without transport.
  • 22. 22 Melanie Soon Yu Xin 0322327 16th April 2016 (Saturday) On this day, we were supposed to meet at the university at 1pm, and head to the church together in a car, things didn’t turn out according to plan so i had to head to the Holy Rosary Church by my own transportation which was the LRT. Prior to my arrival at station in Subang Jaya, I missed the train that arrived at that time. With that I had to wait for another train, which was a dreadful 10 minute. This reminded me of how important time management was. When the train finally arrived it takes at least 25 minutes before I reached the KL Sentral. The duration of the ride from KL Sentral to the Holy Rosary Church was supposed to be around 5-9 minutes, but the traffic slowed it down to 25 minutes. I finally arrive at the church and I could see that my group of friends were waiting for me behind the church. I apologised to them for the delay and we started on our work. In a glance, the exterior of the church was magnificent, tall stone structures and intricate details, I was in awe. I arrived 15 minutes late, despite the scorching weather, my group mates were patient with me which I am deeply grateful for. We took pictures of the exterior of the church as well as our group photos and discussed about our parts. Opinions, thoughts and discussions were also passed around about the church, as well as how we could improve our research and findings. After that, we shared our knowledge and opinions about the church and what we thought of it. As we weren’t allowed into the church till 4pm, we had to wait outside and make the most of what we had. While we were finally allowed to enter the church, we took as many pictures as we could, we also asked the people who managed the church a few questions. Overall, I’ve learnt that teamwork and cooperation is the most important thing in order for a group project to work. I’ve also learnt my lessons with time management, when one person is late, the consequences are that the whole group had to be pulled back in terms of time and productivity.

  • 24. 24 Michelle Tung Man Kaye 0324175 This assignment consist us to be in a group of 10 members which combine with architecture students and quantity surveyor students, while we have 7 members of architecture students and 3 quantity surveyor students. However, before going to the site that we have chosen, we have already separated our own research so that each of us know what to do and what to focus on, in case of missing out something. Then we have another meeting in the library to decide which date and time to go for a site visit. Through discussion we have decided to go for a site visit on 16 APRIL 2016 (Saturday), and we gather at 1pm in campus. Futhermore, we arrived the church around 2pm. When I first arrived the church, I saw a beautiful design Gothic architecture and surrounded by high rise buildings. Moreover, they have an amazing stained glass feature on it and the exterior building is made out of concrete and also decorated some concrete flowers to lighten up the building. Therefore, this is a Catholic church known as the ‘’Holy Rosary Church ’’and also an old building over 100 years with an extremely beautiful one with unique architecture, located in the heart of the city. While everyone is discussing their research, noted down all the details, taking pictures of the building and after we have done everything we took a group photo in front of the church. Besides, there is quite a lot of obstacles on that day which the church was having a talk. But there’s nothing extraordinary happen during the journey, everything just went fine. Although the weather on that day is very hot but worth it. This is a must visit place! I really enjoyed this journey with my groupmates and also thank you to my lecturer to assign us to do this assignment which I learnt more about historical building and teamwork. If there’s another chance to visit back this church or other historical buildings, I would really enjoy the journey again.
  • 25. 25 Michelle Wong Sook Yin 0322362 After discussing within our group, we have decided to choose Holy Rosary Church as our historical significant building. The Holy Rosary Church is a catholic church with its original façade of high ornaments and structures which makes the building historically significant. On 16th April 2016, we gathered at the university before leaving to the Holy Rosary Church which was located in Brickfields at 1pm. We left to the church together and it took around half an hour to reach our destination. Along the way, we discussed and divided out our work among ourselves so that we would know what to research on after the trip. At the church, we looked around the area first and took pictures of the façade. As the church is more towards a properly dressed and managed church, we had to get permission before entering the church to get a glimpse of the interior. However, we were not allowed into the church until after 4pm after their weekend activity. While waiting for their weekend activity to end, we looked around the place and tried to ask the people around for information about the church. We did not manage to get much information about the architecture of the church but they explained more about general information about the church. We waited until 4 to take a look inside the church then took a group photo and left back to the university. I think that this is one of the few remaining original state of the art churches in Kuala Lumpur. Most churches around this area are usually in normal buildings such as the FGA church instead of a church with this façade. Understanding the elements of architecture styles used in churches like the Holy Rosary Church shows how fusion takes place in architectural styles in churches here in Malaysia. It was an elegant and historically significant building to study on.
  • 26. 26 Muhammad A’ameer Mohd A’aseem 032891 The journey started in the morning and ended later in the afternoon. On the way to the site, some members encountered a few problems regarding transport and etc. After a few discussions, we managed to resolve the transportation problems and continued our journey. Some members went individually whereas others carpooled. After we arrived on site, we weren’t allowed in as the church was being prepared for an event later in the evening. And so, we walked around and took pictures that were related to the assignment. After that, we walked around to the back, where it looked as if a school was located. Personally, I was unaware that churches had schools or homes within the area and thought that churches were only places of worship. Around the school-like area, we encountered a person who seemed to have some sort of connection with the church; much like a member. He was nice enough to let us in the church to take a few pictures of the interior and provided some much needed information regarding the church itself. At the end of the journey, I learnt that a church was not only a place of worship, but also a place for education and, for some, a shelter. I also learnt to communicate better with my group members through the ups and downs throughout the journey.
  • 27. 27 Muhammad Areeb Bin Amirullah 0322347 Due to my absenthies on the 16th of April because of family emergencies, I have decided to go on my own with the same schedule as them. So I went on my own the next week itself on the 23rd of April, I got ready at 12pm because I was pretty excited to see of how beautiful it was after ive heard from them saying their architecture its beautiful as it seem it might be. Whatever it is I came out from the house and started driving to Kuala Lumpur. And somehow I don’t care less of the jam in Kuala Lumpur as it seems like im pretty used to the jam from Damansara to Taylors University. As I arrived there it was beautiful as what my group members have told me, and it t somehow it pretty weird for me as Muslim Person to go into a church, it was my 1st time going into a church, and it somehow how a place where people gather every Sunday to have their prayers still amazes me. The people who took care of church seems friendly and they accept me as Muslim person to go into a church. Whatever it is, ive waited till 430 till they let us go in, where my religion lets us go in anytime we want in our Holy Mosque. But lastly, I was scared to go in alone at that time, so ive decided to just walks around the church. I was pretty amazed of how beautiful the church because it is the architectural is from French Gothiic Revival style. What I have learnt from this place, is that how it amazes me where one place can be built at 1903 and still look as beautiful as it seems even its been there before Malaysia was a free country. Ive also learn that this places it’s still used by the people around and what a place can be amazing where multiples can cry and e happy at a place like this. this place of worship still majestically stands on it’s ground as it’s being squeezed by high-rise buildings on it’s both sides. Ive also learned that this places does teach how to be more disciplined in life as where people will eventually be quite when they are inside and how they greet each other. Its beautifully crafted stained windows depicting episodes from the holy bible My journey ends at that place was when I heard some thunders and the cloud was getting darker and darker, From this moment ive known that I should rush into my car who is just parked nearby before the rain start pouring heavily. The historical background at this place it is built in 1903 by Father Francis Emile Terrien, a French missionary and he was constructed by Father Lambert.
  • 28. 28 Muhammad Faidh bin Mohamad 0323712 On the midday of the 16th of April, as soon as the bell tolled at 2, all of us departed from Taylor’s University and headed for our site, The Holy Rosary Church, which was situated in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur. 5 of my groupmates carpooled together in 1 car, which belonged to A’ameer, or at least I assumed it was, as he was driving it. I on the other hand, drove there myself, as I had my own car. Melanie decided to take the KTM and meet us there, whilst 2 of the remaining groupmates, Michelle and Madeline who didn’t gather with us beforehand opt to meet us at the site themselves as they lived nearby. All of us arrived at the site at 3 in the afternoon. Once we were all there, we decided to take multiple pictures of the church all at different angles and viewpoints. The church was really a sight to behold as I had never seen a church with gothic architecture up close and personal before in my entire 19 years of living. We also asked the church organisers as well as their staffs about the history and activities that are carried out by the church. Unfortunately, the pastor wasn’t there during the duration we visited and as such, we could not inquire him. There was also a school situated behind the church as well as apartments. I had a blast visiting the many areas of the church and I’m sure my groupmates felt the same. After two hours of taking pictures and inquiring people, we finally decided to take a group picture together. All of us gathered in front of the church and asked Melanie’s friend to take a picture of us. Soon after, all of us departed from the site and headed our separate ways.
  • 29. 29 Conclusion The reason why we choose the Holy Church are because of how inspiring the architecture of the building itself, although is not well know, it is one of the oldest building located in Kuala Lumpur. This building is worth a look at is has a French Gothic Revival style and it serves mainly Chinese Catholic congregation. What we have learned is that being in a group of 10 is not easy when theres no commitment, teamwork and leadership. What we could say, our group have all that characteristics. We could say its easy for us to work as a group with everyone have given their full commitment on. We have also learned that, it is not easy to complete this assignment, it requires a strong physicaland mental while completing it. We have also learned that everything that is being build in this city have being significant towards the country and their historical background are much appreciated and should also be known more towards the others people. An old building have are being uphold practically have their main reasons towards the country and mainly are because the people who built and their architecture of the building are being recognized where is it from. Lastly, we would say that we have lots of fun on completing this assignment, we have gain a new experience in life. We also have known each other pretty well now and characteristic of comfortability towards each other are being shown and whats important is that we have gain lots of new friends.
