Module Assignment #5
Objectives
1. Discuss attributes of a culture of wellness, including those
that facilitate improving a
patient’s medication experience.
2. Identify behaviors and beliefs that promote safe medication-
taking practices.
3. List actions that individuals, the scientific and medical
community, and government
can take to address America’s drug-taking culture and the
prescription drug misuse
epidemic.
Directions
In Module 5, we’re wrapping-up the course by shifting the
conversation toward a culture
of health. To do this, we’ll write a response paper to one of the
following three TED
talks:
1. “What makes us get sick? Look Upstream” by Dr. Rishi
Manchanda
2. “How to connect with depressed friends” by Bill Bernat
3. “Addiction is a disease. We should treat it like one” by
Michael Botticelli
Select and view the one TED talk that you find the most
interesting (see ‘Resources’).
Then, compose a response paper that reports your interpretation,
analysis, and
aesthetic response of/to the ideas presented within the TED talk.
Consult the ‘What to
Include’ section below for specific instructions.
What to Include
Compose a response paper that reports your interpretation,
analysis, and aesthetic
response of/to your selected TED talk by addressing the
following three writing prompts:
1. Interpret the artistic work:
• In your opinion, what is the main message the presenter is
trying to share?
Support your response with a specific example from the TED
talk.
2. Analyze and Evaluate: What is your analysis of the TED talk
overall? Address both
of these prompts to help construct your analysis:
• What is the main issue or problem the presenter is discussing?
How does
this issue/problem contribute to America’s drug-taking culture?
Elaborate on
your response with an example from the talk.
• Consider the solution the presenter proposes to address the
main
issue/problem they are discussing. If individuals or society
implement this
solution, how would these actions contribute to a culture of
wellness? Again,
elaborate on your response with an example from the talk.
3. Develop an aesthetic response:
• How did watching this TED talk make you feel? Elaborate on
your response
by including a meaningful personal reflection that further
explains your
thoughts and feelings.
4. Format guidelines: Arial font size 11; single-spaced; 1”
margins; Length: 1.5 pages
maximum
5. Please cite the TED talk as well as any external sources, and
include a reference list
containing the full citation for each source following the end of
your essay.

1. The first Supreme Court Case I looked at was the Korematsu
v. United States. This case is about the United States military
forcing the Japanese Americans and Japanese residence into
‘camps” due to them being seen as a threat since the bombing of
Pearl Harbor. The results of the first case was in favor of the
military because they said it was not race based and not
thinking the Japanese Americans a threat to the United States
military. The case was reopened because later on there was
evidence that the military destroyed evidence. The case was in
favor of Korematsu and the other Japanese Americans because
this was racially based action, which violates the 14th I learned
that in the past, there was a lack of care for the public’s
constitutional rights and that many actions were still based upon
the race of a group with ill regard to the Constitutional rights.
2. The second case I looked at was the Trump v. Hawaii case of
2018. The current president has passed a travel ban against
certain countries, which brought many to believe it was
religiously based because the countries chosen were
predominately Islamic religion. Hawaii and Dr.Elshikh filed a
lawsuit against the president due to believing the travel ban was
religiously based. The Supreme Court was in favor of the
president Donald Trump because it falls under the executive
power of the president. I learned that the Supreme Court being
appointed by the president can be a disservice to the country
because some cases that are against the president can be
appeared as in favor of the president and not for ensuring that
the cases were Constitutional.

The early 1970s Roe v. Wade case is that which established
abortion as legal and a part of the 14th amendment. The ruling
was 7-2 and the Court felt that the right to an abortion fell
under a woman’s right to medical privacy (Griswold v.
Connecticut). Women were also able to have an abortion at
different trimesters of the pregnancy. The ruling affected 46
states. I believe that the significance of this case is coming back
into play at this time in history because we have many people
who are trying to get rid of a woman’s right to an abortion. This
brings back the argument of why are men choosing what to do
with a woman’s body and why are we allowing that? The anti-
abortion bills are scary because there are many instances where
abortions are necessary and can even be fatal if not received. It
is unfortunate to live in a society where someone who does not
even have the ability to bear a child is making laws about that.
The next case is Obergefell v. Hodges from 2015. This case is
responsible for making same-sex marriage legal in the United
States. It was 5-4 ruling. Before 2015, it was a state decision of
whether it is legal or not. Because marriage is a fundamental
part of the Constitution, people’s rights were being infringed.
Granting couples of the same sex the ability to get married is
granting them equal dignity under the law. This is important
because there is literally no reason why people should not be
allowed to marry someone from the same gender. Taking away
that dignity or pursuit of happiness from someone is
unconstitutional, and that is exactly why it is legal now.
CASES
1. Korematsu v. United States (1944)
Broad overview: This case relates to the controversial executive
order issued by President Roosevelt in World War II.
Remember from an earlier discussion, during WWII, President
Roosevelt issued an order that essentially authorized the
government to create internment camps and round-up people of
Japanese descent to place in those camps because they were
considered a threat to national security. This case was a
challenge to that executive order and involves a man from San
Leandro who purposefully disobeyed this order. Surely the
Supreme Court would consider this executive order to be
unconstitutional...right??? See below for the answer.
Your task: If this case sounds interesting, read/watch the
material below. While you are reading/watching, be able to do
the following
· Identify the important facts of the case; meaning, what is this
case about? (More detailed than what I provided above.)
· What is the outcome of the case?
· What, in your opinion, is the significance of the case? What
do you think about the outcome of the case?

2. Roe v. Wade (1973)
Broad overview: This is one of the most famous Supreme Court
cases of all time. The Roe v. Wade case was the decision that
legalized abortion throughout the country. Prior to this
decision, states had laws criminalizing and restricting access to
abortions. An interesting aspect of this case is the role that
privacy rights played in the Court's decision and how the 14th
amendment was used as justification for legalizing abortions.
See below for more information on why the Court decided to
overturn state laws which had made abortions illegal.
Your task: If this case sounds interesting, read/watch the
material below. While you are reading/watching, be able to do
the following
· Identify the important facts of the case; meaning, what is this
case about? (More detailed than what I provided above.)

that are attempting at either changing the decision or at least
weakening it:

3. Murphy v. NCAA (2018)
Brief overview: Are you a gambling man or woman?? Well,
this case might interest you! Prior to 2018, sports gambling
was very tightly restricted and regulated. In 1992, Congress
passed a law outlawing state-based sports gambling, with the
exception of the states of Nevada, Delaware, Oregon, and
Montana. These states had already legalized gambling in their
states before 1992. However, there were some states that
thought this was unfair and infringed on their states' right to
make their own laws. Who won and what were the
consequences? Find out below!
Your task: If this case sounds interesting, read/watch the
material below. While you are reading/watching, be able to do
the following

4. Citizens United v. FEC (2010)
Broad overview: This incredibly important case deals with
campaign finances. Prior to 2010, there were very specific
restrictions and regulations on what businesses and corporations
could do to help people who were running for office.
Essentially, corporations were unable to spend money that
helped someone get elected. A central question in this was "is
it Constitutional to have these kinds of limits?" Another
interesting question that comes from this case is "does the 1st
Amendment protect corporations and does it also protect
money?" See below for how the Supreme Court answered those
questions.
Your task: If this case sounds interesting, read/watch the
material below. While you are reading/watching, be able to do
the following
· Identify the important facts of the case; meaning, what is this
case about? (More detailed than what I provided above.)

5. Trump v. Hawaii (2018)
Broad overview: This recent case deals with President Trump's
travel ban that was previously discussed. Again, this executive
order dealt with the president's desire to ban people from
certain countries from entering the US. After the president
issued this executive order a group of states, led by Hawaii,
moved to block the executive order from being enforced on the
grounds that they believed it violated the Constitution and was
an abuse of presidential power. There was also the belief that
the president was targeting these countries simply because they
were Muslim-majority countries. See below for how the
Supreme Court resolved this debate.
Your task: If this case sounds interesting, read/watch the
material below. While you are reading/watching, be able to do
the following
· Identify the important facts of the case; meaning, what is this
case about? (More detailed than what I provided above.)

6. Obergefell v. Hodges (2015)
Broad overview: This case deals with the issue of same-sex
marriage. Prior to 2015, states were allowed to decide for
themselves if they wanted to legalize same-sex marriage. Some
states allowed it, and some states did not. However, there was a
lot of debate over whether states should have this power and it
created a complicated situation where people in some states
could get married but people in other states could not. The
central issue is whether this violated the Constitution, more
specifically the Equal Protection clause in the 14th amendment.
See below for how the Supreme Court answered that.
Your task: If this case sounds interesting, read/watch the
material below. While you are reading/watching, be able to do
the following
· Identify the important facts of the case; meaning, what is this
case about? (More detailed than what I provided above.)

7. Department of Commerce v. New York (2019)
Broad overview: This recently decided case deals with the
Trump administration's desire to place a question on the 2002
Census that asks about citizenship status (the Department of
Commerce is the federal agency that oversees the census). The
Trump administration maintains that this would be important
and valuable information and will not be used for purposes of
deportations, but many states, like New York, feared that this is
a form of voter suppression and would lead to certain
communities and states being undercounted.
Your task: If this case sounds interesting, read/watch the
material below. While you are reading/watching, be able to do
the following
· Identify the important facts of the case; meaning, what is this
case about? (More detailed than what I provided above.)

might it have an impact on our society/government?

  • 1. File Upload: MODULE 5 Module Assignment #5 Objectives 1. Discuss attributes of a culture of wellness, including those that facilitate improving a patient’s medication experience. 2. Identify behaviors and beliefs that promote safe medication- taking practices. 3. List actions that individuals, the scientific and medical community, and government can take to address America’s drug-taking culture and the prescription drug misuse epidemic. Directions In Module 5, we’re wrapping-up the course by shifting the conversation toward a culture of health. To do this, we’ll write a response paper to one of the following three TED talks: 1. “What makes us get sick? Look Upstream” by Dr. Rishi Manchanda 2. “How to connect with depressed friends” by Bill Bernat 3. “Addiction is a disease. We should treat it like one” by Michael Botticelli
  • 2. Select and view the one TED talk that you find the most interesting (see ‘Resources’). Then, compose a response paper that reports your interpretation, analysis, and aesthetic response of/to the ideas presented within the TED talk. Consult the ‘What to Include’ section below for specific instructions. What to Include Compose a response paper that reports your interpretation, analysis, and aesthetic response of/to your selected TED talk by addressing the following three writing prompts: 1. Interpret the artistic work: • In your opinion, what is the main message the presenter is trying to share? Support your response with a specific example from the TED talk. 2. Analyze and Evaluate: What is your analysis of the TED talk overall? Address both of these prompts to help construct your analysis: • What is the main issue or problem the presenter is discussing? How does this issue/problem contribute to America’s drug-taking culture? Elaborate on your response with an example from the talk. • Consider the solution the presenter proposes to address the main issue/problem they are discussing. If individuals or society implement this
  • 3. solution, how would these actions contribute to a culture of wellness? Again, elaborate on your response with an example from the talk. 3. Develop an aesthetic response: • How did watching this TED talk make you feel? Elaborate on your response by including a meaningful personal reflection that further explains your thoughts and feelings. 4. Format guidelines: Arial font size 11; single-spaced; 1” margins; Length: 1.5 pages maximum 5. Please cite the TED talk as well as any external sources, and include a reference list containing the full citation for each source following the end of your essay. Resources 1. Michael Botticelli. The first Supreme Court Case I looked at was the Korematsu v. United States. This case is about the United States military forcing the Japanese Americans and Japanese residence into ‘camps” due to them being seen as a threat since the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The results of the first case was in favor of the military because they said it was not race based and not thinking the Japanese Americans a threat to the United States military. The case was reopened because later on there was evidence that the military destroyed evidence. The case was in favor of Korematsu and the other Japanese Americans because this was racially based action, which violates the 14th I learned
  • 6. that in the past, there was a lack of care for the public’s constitutional rights and that many actions were still based upon the race of a group with ill regard to the Constitutional rights. 2. The second case I looked at was the Trump v. Hawaii case of 2018. The current president has passed a travel ban against certain countries, which brought many to believe it was religiously based because the countries chosen were predominately Islamic religion. Hawaii and Dr.Elshikh filed a lawsuit against the president due to believing the travel ban was religiously based. The Supreme Court was in favor of the president Donald Trump because it falls under the executive power of the president. I learned that the Supreme Court being appointed by the president can be a disservice to the country because some cases that are against the president can be appeared as in favor of the president and not for ensuring that the cases were Constitutional. 2nd peer post( Claire) The early 1970s Roe v. Wade case is that which established abortion as legal and a part of the 14th amendment. The ruling
  • 7. was 7-2 and the Court felt that the right to an abortion fell under a woman’s right to medical privacy (Griswold v. Connecticut). Women were also able to have an abortion at different trimesters of the pregnancy. The ruling affected 46 states. I believe that the significance of this case is coming back into play at this time in history because we have many people who are trying to get rid of a woman’s right to an abortion. This brings back the argument of why are men choosing what to do with a woman’s body and why are we allowing that? The anti- abortion bills are scary because there are many instances where abortions are necessary and can even be fatal if not received. It is unfortunate to live in a society where someone who does not even have the ability to bear a child is making laws about that. The next case is Obergefell v. Hodges from 2015. This case is responsible for making same-sex marriage legal in the United States. It was 5-4 ruling. Before 2015, it was a state decision of whether it is legal or not. Because marriage is a fundamental part of the Constitution, people’s rights were being infringed. Granting couples of the same sex the ability to get married is granting them equal dignity under the law. This is important because there is literally no reason why people should not be allowed to marry someone from the same gender. Taking away that dignity or pursuit of happiness from someone is unconstitutional, and that is exactly why it is legal now. CASES 1. Korematsu v. United States (1944) Broad overview: This case relates to the controversial executive order issued by President Roosevelt in World War II. Remember from an earlier discussion, during WWII, President Roosevelt issued an order that essentially authorized the government to create internment camps and round-up people of Japanese descent to place in those camps because they were
  • 8. considered a threat to national security. This case was a challenge to that executive order and involves a man from San Leandro who purposefully disobeyed this order. Surely the Supreme Court would consider this executive order to be unconstitutional...right??? See below for the answer. Your task: If this case sounds interesting, read/watch the material below. While you are reading/watching, be able to do the following · Identify the important facts of the case; meaning, what is this case about? (More detailed than what I provided above.) · What is the outcome of the case? · What, in your opinion, is the significance of the case? What do you think about the outcome of the case? 1. https://www.uscourts.gov/educational-resources/educational- activities/facts-and-case-summary-korematsu-v-us 2. https://constitutioncenter.org/blog/korematsu-a-decision-that- will-live-in-infamy/ 2. Roe v. Wade (1973) Broad overview: This is one of the most famous Supreme Court cases of all time. The Roe v. Wade case was the decision that legalized abortion throughout the country. Prior to this decision, states had laws criminalizing and restricting access to abortions. An interesting aspect of this case is the role that privacy rights played in the Court's decision and how the 14th amendment was used as justification for legalizing abortions. See below for more information on why the Court decided to overturn state laws which had made abortions illegal. Your task: If this case sounds interesting, read/watch the material below. Murphy v. NCAA (2018) Brief overview: Are you a gambling man or woman?? Well, this case might interest you! Prior to 2018, sports gambling was very tightly restricted and regulated. In 1992, Congress passed a law outlawing state-based sports gambling, with the exception of the states of Nevada, Delaware, Oregon, and Montana. These states had already legalized gambling in their states before 1992. However, there were some states that thought this was unfair and infringed on their states' right to make their own laws. Who won and what were the consequences? Find out below! Your task: If this case sounds interesting, read/watch the material below. While you are reading/watching, be able to do

Citizens United v. FEC (2010) Broad overview: This incredibly important case deals with campaign finances. Prior to 2010, there were very specific restrictions and regulations on what businesses and corporations could do to help people who were running for office. Essentially, corporations were unable to spend money that helped someone get elected. A central question in this was "is it Constitutional to have these kinds of limits?" Another interesting question that comes from this case is "does the 1st Amendment protect corporations and does it also protect money?" See below for how the Supreme Court answered those questions. Trump v. Hawaii (2018) Broad overview: This recent case deals with President Trump's travel ban that was previously discussed. Again, this executive order dealt with the president's desire to ban people from certain countries from entering the US. After the president issued this executive order a group of states, led by Hawaii, moved to block the executive order from being enforced on the grounds that they believed it violated the Constitution and was an abuse of presidential power. There was also the belief that the president was targeting these countries simply because they were Muslim-majority countries. See below for how the Supreme Court resolved this debate. Hodges (2015) Broad overview: This case deals with the issue of same-sex marriage. Prior to 2015, states were allowed to decide for themselves if they wanted to legalize same-sex marriage. Some states allowed it, and some states did not. However, there was a lot of debate over whether states should have this power and it created a complicated situation where people in some states could get married but people in other states could not. The central issue is whether this violated the Constitution, more specifically the Equal Protection clause in the 14th amendment. See below for how the Supreme Court answered that. • 13. 7. Department of Commerce v. New York (2019) Broad overview: This recently decided case deals with the Trump administration's desire to place a question on the 2002 Census that asks about citizenship status (the Department of Commerce is the federal agency that oversees the census). The Trump administration maintains that this would be important and valuable information and will not be used for purposes of deportations, but many states, like New York, feared that this is a form of voter suppression and would lead to certain communities and states being undercounted.
