Feminism and Community Psychology
In South Africa’s current democratic era, woman's negotiations
of human rights is still a delicate balancing act between:
 personal needs;
 broader family, or community needs.
Community psychologists needs to recognize these
contributions as a resource and incorporate feminist
principles into their work with stakeholders to empower
women and through them, the community they live in.
Conceptual compatibilities and
intersection
Feminism and community psychology share a common history, having emerged in the
1960’s as a part of broad movements for social justice and equality, both community and
feminist theories emphasise the importance of understanding the experiences of
oppressed groups.

Women-relevant iniatives
The integration of feminism in community psychology has increased recognition of
the important role South African women play in their communities.
Community psychologists can facilitate woman's peer community building through
developing individual and collective skills in interventions, including activities that
provide women with occasions for analytical, introspective peer dialogues.
By working with various stakeholders and bringing about their comprehension of
these issues, community psychologists can encourage preventive interventions
among women in communities that allow for positive human development.
Such system changes through collaboration of woman's peers, families and
friends, in conjunction with stakeholder contributions can develop grassroots
organizations with the capacity to overcome gendered and racist divisions of power
to affect real change and positive progress in South African communities.
Safety in social support and
collective activism
In community psychology, community building activities are encouraged
across gendered lines, to stimulate community members own initiatives and
increase communal social cohesion.
Women involved in such initiatives would most likely have to overcome
traditional gender role norms but place them in subservience in their family
homes and communities as mothers and wives, in order to contribute as
leaders in these same communities.
The implication for the practice of community psychology is that in creating
a safe space it needs to ensure that all women feel a sense of safety within
its borders, and an institutional responsibility for assuring safety must be in
evidence by involving law enforcement stakeholders and making them
aware of the risk inherent in such communal contributions by women.

Editor's Notes

  1. (community needs): a struggle that includes colonial legacies of socioeconomic deprivation and the social ills of gender-based violence and discrimination. Many poverty stricken and rural women occupying marginalized spaces/ isolatolation result in silence where their stories are not told or heard. South African women are not simply figures of victimisation, but rather contributors to the country’s economy who are the underpinning support for their families and their communities wellbeing. By empowering these women, it will provide a positive influence on the family unit, as well as strengthen their communities as a whole.
  2. The integration of contextual understanding of communal population that includes the intersections between gender, race, class and community as well as attending to diversity dynamics by considering the standpoints of marginalized groups in the community. Feminism and community psychology both focus on understanding the structure and social context of groups to attend issues of differential access to power and privilege and take into consideration that individuals are shaped through their unique cultural, economic and political conditions of their communities. Feminist and community psychology theories and methods is compatible in both perspectives and practices. It is a valuable resource in furthering the community psychologists understanding of the importance of viewing social phenomena through the narratives of women at the margin or bottom of the social hierarchy. Community psychology applications can only be enriched by feminist considerations that analyze diversity within the particular community contexts in which social problems occur.
  3. 1. This has cultivated an awareness of and exposure to surrounding issues of class and gender oppression in society. 2. This offers women of the community the opportunity to see themselves, families and friends as the experts and collaborate in solving their community problems. Such associations encourage a context with developmental leaderships skills empower women and cultivate strategies for community members collaborative planning and participation in programs that become self-sustaining. 3. Sharing their stories and planned projects with local educators. Legislators and nonprofit organizations can move women's and community’s issues from the margins of society to the center. Encouraging communal support and collective action.
  4. 1. Such settings, as facilitated by community psychologists, can motivate women to come together around shade concerns, with attention paid to mentoring and developing supportive networks as well as to bringing in marginalized voices. However, due to high levels of violence and femicide perpetrating against women in South Africa, it is also a community psychologist responsibility to be cognizant of the fact that the inclusion of vulnerable community members in such projects may put them at risk. 2. The defiance of such traditional and patriarchal notions of gender roles, as displayed by women taking only power and encourage of leadership necessary to better their communities, does not assure their emotional or physical safety, and these communal alliances of women can put their lives at risk. 3. In encouraging the development of such spaces that extend towards safety, community psychologists must inform coordinators to be vigilant, caring and sustainable in creating safe community’s spaces that act as a point of refuge for other vulnerable members in their community as well.
