No one structure fits all written arguments. Below is a basic outline for an argumentative or
persuasive essay. The major sections can be reversed, starting with refuting opposition and
ending with reasons for your position. Let your topic help guide you.
This is only one possible outline or organization. Remember that an emphatic structure works
for many arguments, although a chronological or cumulative approach could also work.
I. Introduction
o Your introductory paragraph sets the stage or the context for the position you are arguing for.
Consider the techniques we covered in class: anecdote, quotation, dramatic fact, etc.
o This introduction should include the thesis statement that provides the claim (what you are
arguing for).
A. Your thesis:
1. states what your position on an issue is-NO FIRST PERSON-NO ANNOUNCEMENTS
2. usually appears within the introduction
3. should be a declarative sentence and often contains emphatic language (should, ought,
must)

II. Background Information
A. This section of your paper gives the reader the basic information he or she needs to
understand your position, including important theories or terms.
B. This could be part of the introduction, but may work as its own section or be

III. Your Position
o All evidence you present in this section should support your position. This is the heart of
your essay. Each supporting paragraph should have a topic sentence that clearly relates to the
thesis. Remember to balance “telling” (explanation of your point) and “showing” (evidence for
that point). Remember the three primary appeals: ethos, pathos, and logos.
o Types of evidence include:
· primary sources – interview with someone who works or studies in the field, original

Unique elements of historical secondary school movement are as follows;
i) The period witnessed a rapid growth in high schools graduation rates and national economy at large.
ii) The increase in secondary education for first half of the twentieth century made it possible for high college graduation rates after World War II.
iii) Led to a marked upsurge in some women in the U.S. labor force.
Unique elements of Kalamazoo school case.
i) In Michigan State, the number of high schools increased from 107 in early 1870's to 278 by 1890.
ii) This event was a court case that sought to halt funding of the public school using tax money.
iii) Kalamazoo established its first high school in 1658.
Similarities between the two historical events.
i) The growing credential value brought about by the two past events gave residents in the cities an authoritative incentive to push for more accessibility to high school.
ii) Through the “Secondary School Movement” high schools started gaining more recognition, the Kalamazoo case further entrenched high schools political legitimacy.
iii) Both historical events encouraged public support for the concept of universal education and the belief that schools were to serve poor and wealthy persons in society.
These events are still significant today because through them public schools have been defined, and more, the funding of schools by tax money is now legitimized.
The most important result of the "Secondary school Movement" is the increased enrollment in high schools across the U.S. The increased education opportunities had far reaching advantages to the economy. The most important and significant result of the Kalamazoo case is that it provided a legal basis for the funding of public schools using tax money.

TOPIC SENTENCE [TPS aka the "CLAIM"]
Usually, the first sentence in a BODY PARAGRAPH. It should introduce the topic of the paragraph and relate directly back to the THESIS. (or, in a longer essay, relate it directly back to the TPS of the preceding paragraph.) Imagine someone asking you, "How do you want me to think about your topic now?"
CONCRETE DETAIL [CD aka the "DATA"]:
This is the specific information you offer as the EVIDENCE for your topic; it will be the core of your paragraph. Imagine someone asking you, "Can you show me what you mean?" Other names for CONCRETE DETAIL: illustrations, examples, descriptions, quotations, paraphrasing, plot evidence.
During DRAFTING you may rely upon PHRASES like "FOR EXAMPLE" to introduce CONCRETE DETAIL--this is the kind of thing to eliminate during REVISION
In the literature essay, CD is often a DIRECT QUOTATION.
COMMENTARY [CM aka the "WARRANT"]:
This is your explanation for offering the concrete detail you select--that is, your comment on, discussion about, or evaluation of the evidence (CD) offered. Imagine someone asking you, "What exactly does your concrete detail prove?" You want to suggest how your CD is both relevant and unique. Other names for COMMENTARY include: insight, analysis, interpretation, evaluation, response, explication, reflection.
A hint for getting started on COMMENTARY: begin with the phrase : THIS SHOWS THAT . . . This is the kind of thing to eliminate during REVISION
Once you understand the different components of a paragraph, you can choose to MOVE BEYOND THE TEMPLATE. Some students depart from the FORMAT, some never do.
This whole discussion is based on Toulmin's Model . Here's a little bit more about it.
The model is a six-step system of argument:
(1) a CLAIM is made;
(2) DATA (also called "GROUNDS"), i.e., facts to support it, are offered;
(3) a WARRANT for connecting the data/grounds to the claim is conveyed
In addition, Toulmin adds
(4) BACKING, the theoretical or experimental foundations for the warrant, is shown (at least implicitly);
(5) appropriate MODAL QUALIFIERS (some, many, most, etc.) temper the claim; and
(6) possible REBUTTALS are considered.
But, for now, let us focus on the first three (and add a concluding sentence.
Claim
A claim is a statement that you are asking the other person to accept. This includes information you are asking them to accept as true (exposition) or actions you want them to accept and enact (persuasion).
Many people start with a claim, but then find that it is challenged. If you just ask me to do something, I will not simply agree with what you want. I will ask why I should agree with you. I will ask you to prove you claim. This is where grounds of data become important.

Data is the basis of real persuasion and is made up of information and hard fact.

Step 1: Creating a rough outline
- It begins with your research question.
- It identifies the focus of the research question.
- It lists several categories of answers to your research question. Those categories of answers SHOULD come from your reading sources. Thus, when reading your sources, you should do A FOCUSED REDDING of your sources about your focus of research question. Here one very important tip is while reading, take your notes, as the notes will guide you to create your outline.

(a) Now take out your notebook. As a first step, go back to your working references list and read those sources with the goal of finding answers for your research question. It’s a great idea to take any notes while reading.
(b) Create a rough outline (like the box above) for your paper that includes your research question, focus of research question, thesis statement, and a list of potential supporting points (answers to your research question) from your sources and notes.
Step 2: Expanding your rough outline with evidence
When we use information from sources to explain the main points in body paragraphs, we call that information “evidence.” In other words, your source materials are the places where you will find evidences to answer your research question. However, it’s likely that only some of that information will work as evidence in your paper. You need to decide which information to use as evidence. Your paper will be more convincing if you use the following guidelines when choosing evidence.
Guideline 1: Choose information that you understand easily and can explain clearly.
Think about whether you understand each idea well enough to explain it in your own words. If you don’t understand the information, you won’t be able to write about it clearly, and it will better to omit it.
Guideline 2: Choose ideas that are DIRECTLY and SPECIFICALLY related to the point you are making.
Sometimes it’s tempting to include interesting details that are related to your topic in a general way but don’t help to explain your specific supporting points.
Guideline 3: Choose a variety of types of evidence
Writers can support their ideas with several kinds of information. The following are there common types of evidence that you may find as you look through your sources.

Einstein evidence shows that other scholars or thinkers on the topic have come to the same conclusions as you have. When using this kind of evidence, provide as much information as you can about the expert. Aristotle recommended the use of metaphors when giving a speech because metaphor has clarity, the sweetness of poems and the strangeness of novelty. If the speaker wishes to enhance a thing, Aristotle advises speakers to use a metaphor using something of higher value in the same category; to denigrate a thing, use a metaphor of the same category of lower value. I love the poetic way metaphor was explained.

This experiment found that audiences perceive a stronger connection to A, when a metaphor was used (A pen is a sword), than when a simile was used (A pen is like a sword).

Purpose: The writer of an annotated bibliography uses the bibliography to compile a list of sources to build research. The form includes a brief summary of the source and your own critical assessment of its relevance, objectivity, appropriateness, and usefulness. It is a tool that helps you keep an organized and thoughtful record of the research process and relevant information about the topic.
To this end, you will put together an annotated bibliography in preparation for Assignment 3. In addition to the primary text (Whistling Vivaldi) the bibliography will include three types of textual information: 1) a mainstream news/ magazine article, 2) a scholarly/academic “peer reviewed” article, and 3) a web-based multimedia or blog-style article.
Format: Your annotated bibliographies must paragraphs must contain a topic sentence, clear evidence from the reading, and coherent sentences on a topic. It will use transitions affectively to cohere the overall piece together. It must answer: 1) What is the information in the article you are summarizing? and 2) What is your critical assessment of the article?
Instructions:
1. Cite in MLA-citation format the name of the article.

(or, in a longer essay, relate it directly back to the TPS of the preceding paragraph.) Imagine someone asking you, "How do you want me to think about your topic now?"
CONCRETE DETAIL [CD aka the "DATA"]:
This is the specific information you offer as the EVIDENCE for your topic; it will be the core of your paragraph. Imagine someone asking you, "Can you show me what you mean?" Other names for CONCRETE DETAIL: illustrations, examples, descriptions, quotations, paraphrasing, plot evidence.
During DRAFTING you may rely upon PHRASES like "FOR EXAMPLE" to introduce CONCRETE DETAIL--this is the kind of thing to eliminate during REVISION
In the literature essay, CD is often a DIRECT QUOTATION.
COMMENTARY [CM aka the "WARRANT"]:
This is your explanation for offering the concrete detail you select--that is, your comment on, discussion about, or evaluation of the evidence (CD) offered. Imagine someone asking you, "What exactly does your concrete detail prove?" You want to suggest how your CD is both relevant and unique. Other names for COMMENTARY include: insight, analysis, interpretation, evaluation, response, explication, reflection.
A hint for getting started on COMMENTARY: begin with the phrase : THIS SHOWS THAT . . . This is the kind of thing to eliminate during REVISION
Once you understand the different components of a paragraph, you can choose to MOVE BEYOND THE TEMPLATE. Some students depart from the FORMAT, some never do.
This whole discussion is based on Toulmin's Model . Here's a little bit more about it.
The model is a six-step system of argument:
(1) a CLAIM is made;
(2) DATA (also called "GROUNDS"), i.e., facts to support it, are offered;
(3) a WARRANT for connecting the data/grounds to the claim is conveyed
In addition, Toulmin adds
(4) BACKING, the theoretical or experimental foundations for the warrant, is shown (at least implicitly);
(5) appropriate MODAL QUALIFIERS (some, many, most, etc.) temper the claim; and
(6) possible REBUTTALS are considered.
But, for now, let us focus on the first three (and add a concluding sentence.
Claim
A claim is a statement that you are asking the other person to accept. This includes information you are asking them to accept as true (exposition) or actions you want them to accept and enact (persuasion).
Many people start with a claim, but then find that it is challenged. If you just ask me to do something, I will not simply agree with what you want. I will ask why I should agree with you. I will ask you to prove you claim. This is where grounds of data become important.

Data is the basis of real persuasion and is made up of information and hard fact.

Step 1: Creating a rough outline
- It begins with your research question.
- It identifies the focus of the research question.
- It lists several categories of answers to your research question. Those categories of answers SHOULD come from your reading sources. Thus, when reading your sources, you should do A FOCUSED REDDING of your sources about your focus of research question. Here one very important tip is while reading, take your notes, as the notes will guide you to create your outline.

(a) Now take out your notebook. As a first step, go back to your working references list and read those sources with the goal of finding answers for your research question. It’s a great idea to take any notes while reading.
(b) Create a rough outline (like the box above) for your paper that includes your research question, focus of research question, thesis statement, and a list of potential supporting points (answers to your research question) from your sources and notes.
Step 2: Expanding your rough outline with evidence
When we use information from sources to explain the main points in body paragraphs, we call that information “evidence.” In other words, your source materials are the places where you will find evidences to answer your research question. However, it’s likely that only some of that information will work as evidence in your paper. You need to decide which information to use as evidence. Your paper will be more convincing if you use the following guidelines when choosing evidence.
Guideline 1: Choose information that you understand easily and can explain clearly.
Think about whether you understand each idea well enough to explain it in your own words. If you don’t understand the information, you won’t be able to write about it clearly, and it will better to omit it.
Guideline 2: Choose ideas that are DIRECTLY and SPECIFICALLY related to the point you are making.
Sometimes it’s tempting to include interesting details that are related to your topic in a general way but don’t help to explain your specific supporting points.
Guideline 3: Choose a variety of types of evidence
Writers can support their ideas with several kinds of information. The following are there common types of evidence that you may find as you look through your sources.

Einstein evidence shows that other scholars or thinkers on the topic have come to the same conclusions as you have. When using this kind of evidence, provide as much information as you can about the expert.
