This document describes the key features of a fault in the Earth's crust. A fault plane is the surface where rock on one side of the fracture has moved relative to rock on the other side. The hanging wall block is the rock unit above the fault plane, while the footwall block is below. A fault scarp is the step or cliff that forms along the Earth's surface at the intersection of the fault plane and the land surface.
