Difference Between
Saturated And
Unsaturated Fat
Saturated and unsaturated
fats.
Saturated fats
Unsaturated fats
 Foods containing
unsaturated fats
include avocado,
nuts, and vegetable
oils such as canola,
and olive oils.
 Meat products
contain both
saturated and
unsaturated fats.
Kilojoule intake and uptake

What are fats?
 Fats are made up of fatty acids.
 They are insoluble in water.
 Fats are often called ‘lipids’.
What’s the difference
between fats and oils?
“Oils“ refer to fats that are liquid
at room temperature, while "fats“
refer to fats that are solid at room
temperature.
Saturated vs Unsaturated
fats
 Saturated and unsaturated fats
differ in their energy content and
melting point.
 There is argument over which is
more healthy, however, the
evidence is not conclusive.
What do fats do?
 Fats play a vital role in maintaining
healthy skin and hair, insulating body
organs against shock, maintaining body
temperature, and promoting healthy cell
function.
 Fats also serve as energy stores for the
body.
Visible or invisible fats
Foods with Invisible fats.
This means you cannot see it
and point it out.
In foods such as mayonnaise, French
fries, fast-food hamburgers, chips,
egg yolk, nuts, salad dressing, cheese,
peanut butter, whole milk, chocolate,
cookies, cakes, pastries and pies, fats
are hidden, becoming an integral part
of the food during cooking.
Foods with visible fats.
What are visible vs invisible
fats?
Visible fats, such as butter
and the fat on meat are easy
to spot and cut out.
Also include margarine,
butter, cooking oils, steaks,
bacon and other such visible
fats.
There are fats
