I have chosen to analyze The Interpreter as it
involves characteristics in which would be
transferable to our own ideas. This trailer analysis
will be helpful in identifying the different features
in trailers. I will be particularly focusing on
preferred reading of the audience, which can be
argued is the most important reading as the
audience is the actual consumer, however also
focusing on the oppositional reading.

3. Uses and Gratifications Model:
The uses and gratifications model is an active audience
theory which suggests that audiences have expectations
which they expect in order to be satisfied by media
texts.
it is clear that the demographic (19-50) are almost given
a preferred reading (expectations) due to vast amount
of variety in interest the trailer offers. The trailer has
specifically targeted the demographic with the
employment of a number of vital features: (PTO)

4. Pace of Editing (1)
The extremely fast paced editing and cuts are carried out to
correctly represent its genre of mystery and thriller.
However, juxtaposed to this overall and general comment on
the trailer, the opening has long extended shots which cut
from one to another. This can be seen primarily in the first
few shots of the trailer, the sense of 'delay' and 'slowness'
can be seen through the use of cinematography. The use of
focus from Kidman's face towards the backdrop (embassy)
empasise this sense of 'delay' yet also creates a mood of
obscurity as the reader has to 'wait' in order to see the
backdrop.

5. Pace of Editing (2)
We are also able to take a deeper look at the emotions
and obvious 'stress' the protagonist is experiencing.
This can be correct fully interpreted as a signifier and
convention of the thriller aspect of the genre.
The demographic take a preferred reading to this
editing as they feed off of the emotions Kidman
successfully exerts, it can be argued that Pollack's
message here is exhibiting what today's politics is
doing to people who are hardly even
involved, thus, the preferred reading the audience
intakes is one of realisation and awareness in to

6. Dialogue
The dialogue plays an extremely important role in establishing the
vulnerability of this character to the spectator. To achieve this
preferred reading of a scared yet determined protagonist in which
all audiences can empathies with, the director of the trailer has
employed various segments of very dramatic dialogue to enhance
this ideology. In this trailer the protagonist states 'I'm scared and
my protector is someone who doesn't believe me!'. For the
audience, this accentuates the fear and frustration the character
is having to deal with. She faces the possibility of being killed if
her work is discovered, but also the lack of protection and
reassurance the people that she is working for should provide her
with. All of this dialogue is a very subtle which means promoting
the theme of mystery, thriller and secrecy is clear and easy.
