A soybean seed patented technology was invented, produced and sold by Monsanto that is genetically altered to resist its “RoundUp” herbicide. The patented Roundup Ready soybean seeds are soybean seeds that are genetically altered which allows them to survive exposure to the herbicide glyphosate. Monsanto sells the seeds to farmers subject to a licensing agreement.
GURT (Genetic use restriction technology)siddarudh
This document provides an overview of genetic use restriction technology (GURT), also known as "terminator technology". It defines GURT as genetically modifying plants to produce sterile seeds, preventing farmers from reusing seeds. The technology uses three genes - a repressor gene, recombinase gene, and toxin gene - that work together to terminate seeds unless an activator is used. While not yet commercialized, it is being developed by biotech companies to restrict seed reuse and protect intellectual property. However, critics argue it would negatively impact farmers' rights, food security, biodiversity, and local seed varieties that many small farmers depend on for replanting. The document examines both perspectives on this controversial technology.
Terminator gene technology refers to plants that have been genetically modified to render sterile seeds at harvest.
Genetic use restriction technologies (GURTs) are the name given to experimental methods, described in a series of recent patent applications and providing specific genetic switch mechanisms that restrict the unauthorized use of genetic material (FAO, 2001a) by hampering reproduction (variety-specific V-GURT) or the expression of a trait (trait-specific T-GURT) in a genetically modified (GM) plant.
This document summarizes terminator gene technology, which genetically modifies plants to produce sterile seeds. It was developed by the seed industry to prevent seed saving. There are two types: varietal GURT (V-GURT) renders all subsequent seeds sterile, while trait GURT (T-GURT) switches traits on/off using chemical treatments. While it provides benefits to industry, it is controversial due to concerns over loss of biodiversity and impact on small farmers who rely on seed saving. Most countries have imposed a moratorium on field testing and commercialization of terminator seeds.

Contract farming involves an agreement between a buyer, such as a company, and farm producers. The company may specify quality standards and purchase price, and the farmer agrees to deliver the crop. There are three main types of contract farming arrangements. Inputs may be fully supplied by the company, partially supplied through local dealers, or supplied by input dealers paid by companies. Contract farming provides benefits to both farmers and companies. Farmers have assured markets and prices, inputs, and technical support. Companies ensure supply and quality of crops. Examples of contract farming in India include poultry, pulpwood, vegetables, and various crops for processing.
Impacts of genetically modified crops and seedsDebbie-Ann Hall
Genetically-modified (GM) seeds are a significant step forward in the production of agricultural crops. GM seeds are seeds that have been modified to contain specific
characteristics such as resistance to herbicides (in the case of "Roundup Ready" products)
or resistance to pests (in the case of Bt corn). But the method of modification used with GM seeds varies from the traditional method in an important respect: the genes have not been modified over generations of cross-fertilization, but rather inserted directly into the
DNA of the seed.
Although this method is more efficient, critics fear that the result — a "novel gene combination" — may have health or environmental impacts that are not
being adequately addressed. As a result, the technology is surrounded by significant
controversy.

Breeding for Organic Production Systems: On Farm Variety TrialsRAFI-USA
The Rural Advancement Foundation International (RAFI) partners with North Carolina State University (NCSU) to conduct the Breeding for Organic Production Systems (BOPS) project. The project aims to improve crops for organic farmers through on-farm variety trials. RAFI helps organic growers by providing information on new varieties and conducting rigorous on-farm trials that meet farmers' needs. Previous trials have evaluated corn, wheat, soybean and peanut varieties, identifying those with traits like disease resistance and weed competitiveness that perform best under organic conditions. RAFI works with farmers to design and implement the trials, collecting data on yields and other traits to help organic producers choose the varieties most suitable for their farms.
Come to the Table Guidebook: Second EditionRAFI-USA
The second edition of the Come to the Table Guidebook is a 40-page publication released in 2015 by RAFI, the NC Council of Churches and Resourceful Communities. It includes snapshots of community groups that have pioneered innovative food access work, the current status of hunger and agriculture in North Carolina and nationally, along with new resources and stories from faith leaders and from the field.
RAFI-USA works to cultivate markets, policies, and communities that support family farms through socially just and environmentally sound practices. It ensures that farm laborers are respected and protected, natural resources are preserved, food is accessible to all, and seed diversity is maintained. RAFI-USA supported farmers through a difficult economic year by finalizing a National Organic Action Plan, doubling funding for the National Organic Program, and providing grants to innovative farmers through the Tobacco Communities Reinvestment Fund. RAFI-USA remains committed to developing sustainable and equitable agriculture systems for the future of family farms.

Hydraulic Fracturing: Where are We Now? PowerPoint PresentationRAFI-USA
North Carolina's legislature has authorized hydraulic fracturing but prohibited permits until regulations are in place. A Mining and Energy Commission is drafting these regulations, including rules around water management, chemical disclosure, and well construction. They have also studied compulsory pooling, where unwilling landowners can be forced to participate in drilling units. The Commission's study group recommended landowners get liability protections and fair offers first. The legislature will review these recommendations but there is no timeline for action. Stakeholders can get involved by engaging with the Commission process or contacting the advocacy group RAFI.
Joint Statement on USDA Sunset Policy Sept2013RAFI-USA
The USDA announced changes to the process for exempting prohibited substances in organic food without public comment. Under the new policy, exempted synthetic materials could be indefinitely permitted unless a two-thirds majority of the NOSB votes for their removal, rather than requiring reapproval every five years. Consumer and environmental groups decried this move as weakening the meaning of the organic label by minimizing incentives for natural alternatives and lowering consumer expectations. They intend to campaign for the USDA to reverse the changes and uphold the spirit of the organic law and standards.
