TERMS OF WOMEN’S ENGAGEMENT
IN COFFEE & COCOA
• Maintains thematic comparison between
coffee & cocoa experiences
• Explores interventions at different levels in
value chain
• Tells the ‘story’ of each intervention and also
analyses lessons and applicability
• Adds to business case and draws overall
conclusions about what combination of
interventions is effective

6. PUBLICATION: CHANGING THE
TERMS OF WOMEN’S ENGAGEMENT
IN COFFEE & COCOA
Cases:
• Women’s integration in POs: Pangoa, Peru and
work by Twin with new cocoa PO in Sierra
Leone Goleagorbu
• Promoting women’s access to land: Kokoo Pa
in Ghana and Mzuzu Coffee, Malawi
• Improving business performance through a HH
approach: HRNS and SMS-ECOM, Kenya
• Promoting women as trainers and extension
services providers : Mondelēz International
and Nespresso
6
7. CONCLUSIONS (1)
• Intrahousehold gender relations have to be addressed, but…
• Changes at different levels do not automatically translate - interventions
are needed at all levels for systemic change
• Bottom-up and top-down approaches both have value!
• System change also includes changing practices and knowledge within
companies, not only at origin
• Some changes take longer (eg policy/legal framework) but there is no
need to wait, everyone can be an agent of change. And good practice
can be used for advocacy
7
8. CONCLUSIONS (2)
• Women’s voices and perspectives must be at the heart, therefore
women’s leadership development is important
• ‘Scaling up’ requires adaptation to context, even within
regions/countries
• Knowledge sharing and collaboration between different actors are key

11. GENDER ACTION LEARNING
SYSTEMS (GALS)
• GALS is a community-led empowerment methodology that
aims to give women as well as men more control over their
lives and catalyze and support a movement for gender justice.
• It works through diagrammatic tools and other popular
learning methods (song, role play)
• The process supports families to develop visions and plans,
analyse gender constraints and take action to address them
