Importance of Preconception care

This study piloted a family-centered childhood obesity intervention for low-income families with preschool-aged children enrolled in Head Start, which utilized community-based participatory research to develop the intervention and have parents play an active role in planning, implementing, and evaluating the intervention over two years. The intervention included a health communication campaign, revising letters about children's health metrics, nutritional counseling sessions, and a parents program to promote healthy living. Analysis of outcomes found improvements in children's BMI z-scores, physical activity, diet, and screen time as well as positive changes in parenting practices and attitudes related to food, activity, and screen time.

Childhood obesity, a very complex health issue that becomes a growing problem in the U.S. In fact, “over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates have tripled in the U.S., and today, the country has some of the highest obesity rates in the world: one out of six children is obese, and one out of three children is overweight or obese.” (Child obesity, n.d.). Physical diseases and conditions are often accompanying obesity. Also, obesity may have an adverse effect on various systems in a child’s body, such as heart, lungs, muscles and bones, kidneys, digestive tract, and hormones that control blood sugar and puberty. Furthermore, it can take a toll on social life because obese kids and teenagers are more likely to have low self-esteem. “Childhood obesity is one of the most serious threats to the health of our nation.” (Building evidence to prevent childhood obesity, n.d.). Children and youth who are obese and overweight will likely remain overweight or obese into adulthood.

ACSM Annual Meeting 2015_Higgins
598 fourth grade students from 12 schools in the Greater Philadelphia area were measured to assess anthropometric data and compare to national and regional standards. Height, weight, BMI, and waist circumference were measured from January to May 2014. Results found the average BMI for boys and girls was higher than US standards, with 18.3% of students overweight and 18.2% obese. The frequency of overweight and obesity was greater than US standards but similar to Philadelphia regional standards. Girls had a higher frequency of overweight while boys had a higher frequency of obesity compared to US standards.

Sir waseem presentation
This study examined the prevalence of obesity and malnutrition in 284 school-going children in grades 6-8 across four schools in Karachi, Pakistan. The results found that 52% of children were underweight, 34% were normal weight, 6% were obese, and 8% were overweight. Higher socioeconomic status was associated with higher rates of obesity and overweight. Meat consumption and lack of physical activity were also correlated with higher weight. The study highlights the coexistence of undernutrition and obesity in Pakistani children and the need for interventions targeting nutrition education and physical activity.

Childhood obesity has been described as the main health-related problem in developed countries, due to its link with physical, social and psychological consequences with an increased risk for developing metabolic and cardiovascular diseases in adulthood.
All the pupils of both sexes attending the second year of all the primary schools in Pavia, Northern Italy, were recruited (n=470) for this study. Measurements of weight, height and waist circumference (WC) were taken under standard conditions. Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist-to-height-ratio (W/HtR) were computed and sex specific percentile values for BMI, WC and W/HtR were calculated and compared with the same percentiles available for different countries.
The results show that according to Cole’s cut-off point reference standards, 12.5% and 9.0% of boys and girls respectively are overweight, 4.7% and 5.2% respectively are obese. The WC mean value is equal to 60.0 ± 6.0 cm in boys and 59.0 ± 6.7 cm in girls. Using different 90th reference worldwide standard percentiles for WC as a comparison, the prevalence of our children with WC > 90th percentile is very different. The W/HtR mean value of the total sample is 0.46 ± 0.03. Assuming a cutoff of 0.5, 87.6% of the pupils have a W/HtR value ≤ 0.5, while 12.4% of the subjects have a value > 0.5, showing abdominal obesity among 55 children at an early age.
Our results point out the need for specific preventive and treatment interventions by identifying and implementing effective strategies, policies, and nutritional education programs in order to decrease the prevalence rate of obesity as well as the risk of metabolic disorders.
Obesity- Tipping Back the Scales of the Nation 19th April, 2017
Laurie Eyles is the team lead of the NHS Lothian Weight Management Service in Scotland. Obesity rates are high in Scotland, with 65% of adults overweight and 29% obese. The risk of type 2 diabetes increases substantially with higher BMI. The aims of diabetes prevention strategies are to delay and reduce type 2 diabetes by targeting weight loss and glucose control in high-risk populations. Effective strategies include early intervention, lifestyle programs incorporating diet, physical activity and behavior changes leading to 5-10% weight loss. The Edinburgh experience demonstrates a tiered model of care including community and clinical weight management services and diabetes education programs.
Poster
This study assessed behavioral problems among overweight school children in Tarrant County, Texas. Survey data on over 3,500 Caucasian and Hispanic children aged 0-14 was analyzed. Results showed that among Caucasian children, being overweight or obese was linked to behavioral issues like bullying others, exhibiting problematic social behaviors, and experiencing bullying. However, weight status did not significantly predict suspensions for Hispanic children. The study concludes that childhood obesity can negatively impact physical and mental health into adulthood, and suggests further research on academic and social development impacts.

Childhood obesity has been described as the main health-related problem in developed countries, due to its link with physical, social and psychological consequences with an increased risk for developing metabolic and cardiovascular diseases in adulthood.
All the pupils of both sexes attending the second year of all the primary schools in Pavia, Northern Italy, were recruited (n=470) for this study. Measurements of weight, height and waist circumference (WC) were taken under standard conditions. Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist-to-height-ratio (W/HtR) were computed and sex specific percentile values for BMI, WC and W/HtR were calculated and compared with the same percentiles available for different countries.
The results show that according to Cole’s cut-off point reference standards, 12.5% and 9.0% of boys and girls respectively are overweight, 4.7% and 5.2% respectively are obese. The WC mean value is equal to 60.0 ± 6.0 cm in boys and 59.0 ± 6.7 cm in girls. Using different 90th reference worldwide standard percentiles for WC as a comparison, the prevalence of our children with WC > 90th percentile is very different. The W/HtR mean value of the total sample is 0.46 ± 0.03. Assuming a cutoff of 0.5, 87.6% of the pupils have a W/HtR value ≤ 0.5, while 12.4% of the subjects have a value > 0.5, showing abdominal obesity among 55 children at an early age.
Our results point out the need for specific preventive and treatment interventions by identifying and implementing effective strategies, policies, and nutritional education programs in order to decrease the prevalence rate of obesity as well as the risk of metabolic disorders.
Obesity- Tipping Back the Scales of the Nation 19th April, 2017
Laurie Eyles is the team lead of the NHS Lothian Weight Management Service in Scotland. Obesity rates are high in Scotland, with 65% of adults overweight and 29% obese. The risk of type 2 diabetes increases substantially with higher BMI. The aims of diabetes prevention strategies are to delay and reduce type 2 diabetes by targeting weight loss and glucose control in high-risk populations. Effective strategies include early intervention, lifestyle programs incorporating diet, physical activity and behavior changes leading to 5-10% weight loss. The Edinburgh experience demonstrates a tiered model of care including community and clinical weight management services and diabetes education programs.

This study assessed behavioral problems among overweight school children in Tarrant County, Texas. Survey data on over 3,500 Caucasian and Hispanic children aged 0-14 was analyzed. Results showed that among Caucasian children, being overweight or obese was linked to behavioral issues like bullying others, exhibiting problematic social behaviors, and experiencing bullying. However, weight status did not significantly predict suspensions for Hispanic children. The study concludes that childhood obesity can negatively impact physical and mental health into adulthood, and suggests further research on academic and social development impacts.

ABSTRACT
Background: A high consumption o f fruits, vegetables, and whole
grain foods and adequate levels o f physical activity are associated
with a lower risk o f obesity and lower risk o f lifestyle cancers. Re
search suggests that rural communities have a high risk o f unhealthy
behaviors that may contribute to excessive weight gain and risk o f
lifestyle related cancers. The purpose o f this pilot study was to deter
mine the effect o f an educational intervention in a rural Texas com
munity on the intermediate outcomes o f eating behavior (increasing
the intake o f fruits, vegetables, and whole grain foods) and physical
activity behavior, and the distal outcome o f body mass index (BM1).
Methods: The intervention, guided by the Social Cognitive Theory,
was implemented over a 10-month period and included a variety o f
community-based education activities related to nutrition, physical
activity, and cancer in a variety o f settings. The effect o f the inter
vention was assessed by analyzing pre- and post-data (N=67) using
independent and paired samples t-tests and bivariate correlations.
Results: Participants were mainly Hispanic (53.7%) and White
(44.8%). At pre-intervention, 6% o f participants reported consuming
>5 servings o f fruits and vegetables daily, 19.4% consumed >3 serv
ings o f whole grain foods daily, and 85.1% were either overweight
or obese. Only 31% o f participants were aware that cancer risk was
related to overweight at pre-intervention. At post-intervention, His-
panics showed a significant increase in the consumption o f fruits and
vegetables (p<0.05). Participation in sports or physical activity pro
grams showed a significant increase (p<0.05). However, no signifi
cant decrease in BM1 was shown.
Conclusion: This intervention had a limited effect in increasing tar
geted behaviors and no effect on reducing BMI. More assessment is
needed in this rural community to identify barriers to healthy behav
iors and to improve interventions to increase consumption o f fruits,
vegetables, and whole grain foods, levels o f physical activity, and
awareness o f the cancer and obesity relationship.

Abstract
Obesity among American Hispanic females between the ages of twenty and sixty-four years old is the new health inequality in the United States. Food, physical activity, and obesity are one of these twelve leading health indices categorized as important national health issues by Healthy People 2020. Obesity is classified as anyone who surpasses substance mass indicator (BMI ) of thirty. According to females' wellness, three at four American females are overweight or obese. History of woman in Sports For most human history, healthy rivalry has been considered as an entirely masculine thing. Females weren't allowed to see most sporting events. Let only act in them. Not till late nineteenth century did females start participating in sporting events. Although females were allowed to participate in some sports, relatively few showed benefit, for a variety of cultural and mental reasons that are even poorly understood.
Although the fast gains seen in fat since the 1970s seem to have leveled off, Fat and obesity continue to take severe issues in the United States. Increasing physical activity and improving food are keys to fat prevention and control, in addition to policies that alter the situation to make wholesome eating and healthy physical activity more comfortable, safer, and more pleasing are expected to take most effective.

To address this, approaches are needed to prevent obesity through policies influencing food environments, marketing of unhealthy foods, and promoting healthy diets and physical activity. Obesity in Wayne Count is a public health problem, especially among children and adults. Children aged 10 to 17 and adults with over 20 years are vulnerable to obesity. Children and adults with obesity make 45.9% of the total population, and most of them come from low-income populations where health disparity is a prevalent issue. Health determinants in Wayne County include education, poverty, income, housing, and discrimination (Teixeira et al., 2015). The obese population does not have access to clean water and live in slums, where air pollution is dominant. More than 17% of adults in Wayne County lack health insurance coverage. Blacks are poorer compared to their white counterparts and have increased chances of having obesity.

Most of the roads are tarmacked, and residents of Wayne Count prefer driving than walking. Wayne County is among the topmost counties of Michigan where obesity among children and adults is a health problem; it is ranked 5th position (Tholen et al., 2019). Introduction
Childhood obesity poses serious health problems in the US as the number of overweight and obese population increases at a rapid pace every year. The effects of this problem have arrested the attention of policymakers, societal members, and government agencies. This has resulted in ranking childhood obesity as a national health concern. The adverse impacts of this disease go beyond the health realms to include economic burden on both personal and national budgets. While there are numerous risk factors and various evidence-based interventions to address this challenge, no single approach is consistently efficacious in curbing the disease. Consequently, it is imperative that efficacious initiatives and policies be developed to address the never-ending problem of childhood obesity. Multidisciplinary approaches are often broad and cut across all dimensions of personal health problems. Instead of placing emphasis solely on biomedical models, health care professionals should also seek to promote behavior change among obesity patients and their family members. A PICOT statement can be utilized as an effective tool to seek interventions of addressing childhood obesity.

Population
In the US, obesity prevalence is highest among children aged from 6 to 11 years (Cheung et al. 2016). The disease has tripled among this age group from 4.2 percent to 15.3 percent from 1963 to 2012. In the last three decades, increased cases of obesity prevalence have been noted among children of all ages, although the differences in obesity prevalence have been recorded in terms of age, race, ethnicity, and gender (Cheung et al. 2016).
