DANIEL'S ESSAY
Countless destructive implications were presumed upon me after high school because of my decision to attend a community college rather than a university. Eventually however, those assumptions began affection me, leaving me to question myself and my potential. It wasn't until I took Dr. Smith's Political Science class that my confidence was rebuilt. Dr. Smith showed us videos on current governmental event, talked in depth about the criminal justice system, and introduced us to the world of politics. Dr. Smith noticed my enthusiasm in these subjects and persuaded me to attend several town hall meetings where mayors, candidates, and assembly members spoke. After one particular meeting, Dr. Smith informed me of internship opportunities available to students. I sent an application and was hired as an intern. While interning, I was responsible for assisting the constituents of my district though skewered processes such as health care and unemployment as well and amicably communicating with angry constituents. Dr. Smith was the only professor who stayed in touch with me throughout this experience. My passion for communications merged with my developing passion in political and governmental services to form my dream job of one day becoming a criminal attorney. With a clear goal, I have become more motivated to do well in school and work hard to maintain my academic standing.

Hello Everyone,
My name is Jessica, we currently live in Texas due to the Army. My husband and I met in the military in 2012 and then welcomed our one and only child. Our son Erik who just turned 4 this past week. I got out of the Army in 2017 and my husband is still in. We call North Carolina home due to my parents and siblings all live there now. We look forward to retiring their once he is done with the Army. I have. BA in Education with a focus on B-K Teaching. I wanted to teach Kindergarten and began as a TA in the public schools before I joined the Army. I realized that my passion wasn't there for teaching children as much as I want to teach adults. I began my Masters in 2017 for Early Childhood and Higher Education. I want to teach at the college level. I plan to continue for a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership. I think that every day you learn something new and enjoy learning as much as I can to become a subject matter expert in my career field. In the Army, I was Human Resources and it was a great job and I enjoyed it Iut i do not want to sit behind a desk all day and push papers. Id rather be part of the learning experience and that I want to inspire and teach those pursuing education in the 21st century.
My best college course is probably all of them thus far. This is my last class for my Master's and it has been a great experience. I love the communication with my Professors and the constant contact between my peers. I think that with each class the requirements have been beyond reasonable. My undergrad was a bit different and stressful and now I feel more confident and able to complete my classes and hopes to get into the college system at a community level and begin my career.

- 2. Introduction • Hi, everyone. I am so pleased to have you enrolled in class. • Please allow me a few minutes to highlight a bit about myself. • I can’t wait to meet everyone in person, and learn more about you as well.
- 3. Educational Background I grew up in northern Texas and northern New Mexico. I always attended public schools. After graduating fromWest Las Vegas High School in Las Vegas, NM, I immediately began my Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science at New Mexico Highlands University, also in Las Vegas, New Mexico. While at Highlands, I studied under Dr. Abbas Manafy and focused on International Relations. I went on to study international politics during my Master’s Degree program at University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). To complete my Master’s degree at UTEP, I conducted a mixed-methods study to explore differences in civic engagement among Latina youth living on the US-Mexico border and Latina youth living in northern New Mexico. I went on to complete my Doctorate at UTEP in Educational Leadership, where I conducted a 4-year long study to understand how faculty members made sense of a significant shift in university mission, and (re)constructed their roles in response.

Research Interests • My research agenda centers on three major lines of inquiry: (1) the academic profession; (2) earning/reforming notions of legitimacy inside academia; and (3) faculty evaluation concerning intellectual activity. • Overall, my research is concerned with how faculty earn and maintain legitimacy within academia, and how various intersections shape those processes: intersections of identity, intersections with the disciplines, with an organization, and with the field of higher education, overall.
- 5. Outside of school • Beyond the love I have for my work, I have a wonderful family. Together, we enjoy music, movies, bike riding, and eating at new restaurants. My daughter is very interested in all things art; she sews, dances, and writes. My partner is an excellent athlete, cook, and he keeps the household organized and running smoothly. I enjoy weight lifting, running, listening to different types of music, and identifying quotes that help me capture the moments and motivation in my life.
