                          Presentation Abstracts

California FACE Update
Hank Cierpich

Abstract: This update highlights several recent California fatality investigations - and strategies
that made prevention efforts more timely.

Iowa FACE Update: Experts Engaged in Site Visit Using Cell-to-Internet Conferencing
Murray D. Madsen, MBA

Abstract: Pictures on cell phones, laptops with webcams, voice over internet provider (VOIP),
conferencing with voice and video over the internet, these are all familiar technologies.
However, video telephony, video conferencing via cell phone, is not yet mainstream in the U.S.
Cellular and internet interconnectivity offers the potential to efficiently and effectively engage
multiple experts in real time from their workstations with an investigator on-site in a remote
locale. IA FACE will share its first configuration and experience with video over cell-to-internet
conferencing.

Massachussetts FACE Update
Michael Fiore

Abstract: MA FACE will provide an update to the group about the activities that MA FACE has
been involved in since the last annual meeting.

Michigan’s Focus on Fatal Falls: Factors, Fixes, and Follow-up
Debra Chester

Abstract: There were 875 work-related deaths for the six years of 2001-2006 in Michigan. One
hundred twenty five (14.3%) of the deaths were a result of a fall. MIFACE will present the
descriptive epidemiological data of work-related falls, highlighting fatal falls in the construction
sector where 60% of the deaths from falls occurred. We will also present illustrative case studies,
educational interventions, and implications for policy.

New Jersey FACE Update
Dan Lefkowitz

Abstract: Since our last update at the meeting in Morgantown, WV, The NJ FACE program has
continued working on case investigations, data analysis, and educational outreach. Specifically,
we have had several types of fatality investigations including a machine-related incident at a NJ
dock, a sanitation truck fatality, and a fall from a communications tower. Our surveillance and
data analysis of non-fatal injuries in the NJ Hispanic population project culminated in a journal
article submitted to the American Journal of Industrial Medicine, and we are completing a project
on fatal and non-fatal injuries in the NJ fishing industry. We have recently completed the
educational outreach to NJ airports, which included the Tail Stand Hazard Alert and survey.
Future NJ FACE plans include continued site investigations, fatal and non-fatal injury surveillance,
and educational outreach to dock workers.

New York FACE Update
Julia Zhu

Abstract: New York FACE Update: NY FACE will present program updates focusing on two new
initiatives:
     1. Preventing fatal injuries to loggers and other tree workers through partnering with
"Game of Logging" in disseminating “Logging Safety-a Field Guide” and evaluating the
          usefulness of the Guide; and
     2. Developing injury prevention training materials for the ski resorts through working with
Ski Areas of New York (SANY), a trade association representing 40 ski areas in New York
          State.

Oregon FACE Update: Danger in the Forests and on the Sea
Gary Rischitelli

Abstract: Oregon continues to experience a high number of traumatic occupational fatalities in
logging and fishing. Our estimates suggest that they may be among the highest occupational
fatality rates in the United States. We will describe the incidence, risk factors, and challenges
surrounding these activities and our current research and intervention efforts, as well as suggest
policy changes to reduce these events.

Crane Safety in Washington
Tom Sjostrom

Abstract: Washington FACE will present a discussion of the new rules regarding Crane Safety in
Washington State
