1. Avoiding Plagiarism: Howto Properly Document Sources – Dr. Janice Carrington
If you use it, then cite it! If you cite it, then reference it! This workshop will expose new learners
and current users to the up-to-date quirks and demands of two primary styles of documenting
sources, the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Modern Language Association
(MLA). Universal proverb: “Give credit where credit is due.”
2. Challenges ofGroup Work in College – Dr. Maria Volpe
There are inherent benefits to being part of a group project, but there are also inherent challenges.
Don’t let group conflict prevent your group from earning the best grade possible. Learn how to
effectively manage group conflict.
3. Getting Started with CUNYFirst – Stephanie Jasmine
Students will learn the basics of navigating CUNYfirst,including how to Log In, search for
classes,the shopping cart feature,navigating the Student Center (…) and more!
4. Great Expectations: Research in Graduate School – Kevin Nesbitt & Jennifer Dobbins
You’re in graduate school, and you’ll be doing graduate-level research. What can you expect and
what will be expected of you? This workshop provides an overview of the graduate-level research
experience, tools, skills and resources you’ll need, and research practices that will ensure the
integrity of your work. Chat with representatives from the Academic Integrity Unit, John Jay
Library, faculty and graduate students who’ll share insights, experiences and strategies for
success.
5. Communicating for School and Work – Prof. Elton Beckett
This session is appropriate for graduate students who wish to enhance their ability to
communicate effectively in educational and professional settings. It will specifically address
effective vocal use, communication apprehension including enhancing communication
confidence and logical structure for successfulstrategy.
6. Introduction to RefWorks – Prof. Kathleen Collins
Managing your bibliographies & research is about to get much easier. The web-based RefWorks
database can help you build and organize your own searchable database of references; format
bibliographies according to any citation style; and easily import references from a variety of
catalogs & databases. This workshop will teach you the basic steps to begin using RefWorks for
your own research.
7. It’s All About Who You Know…Right? – Jovanny Suriel
Come and learn how networking can bring you one step closer to being successfulin your field!
Make the most out of your next networking event(s) by learning tips, and tricks geared toward
building and keeping your professional network.
8. Library Database Searching - Prof. Kathleen Collins
No matter what your academic program, your assignments will likely include annotated
bibliographies, literature reviews or extensive papers. And whether you are new to using library
databases or already familiar with them, there are always ways to learn more and improve your
searching techniques. This hour-long workshop will focus on the specific databases appropriate
for your subject matter as well as generalsearching techniques to help facilitate your research
process. Time will be allowed for active searching and individual attention.
9. Resume Writing for Graduate Students – Chantelle Wright
As a graduate student, you bring a slew of academic and career experiences that should be
reflected on your resume. This workshop will show you how tailor your work to reflect the
mature and groomed professional that you are. You will also learn the difference between a
resume and curriculum vitae (CV) and how you can make them both work for your growing
repertoire!
10. Standing Out Above the Crowd: Maximizing Your Leadership Style to Reach Your
Full Potential (Part I & Part II; may be taken independently.) – Rosann Santos-Elliott
No two leaders are alike. However, there are leadership traits that allow the great ones to get
noticed. In this seminar, students will learn their unique leadership strengths in order to fully
maximize their natural abilities and set themselves apart.
11. Statistics…it really is important! – Dr. Dante Tawfeeq & Dr. Adrian Lovell
This workshop examines the importance of statistics. Students will examine the statistics behind
everyday activities in the quantification of the social sciences in New York City. Emphasis on
mathematical skills and topics basic to the understanding of probability and
inferential/descriptive statistics will be covered. This workshop will utilize contemporary
scenarios germane to New York City to facilitate the learning of statistics.
12. Writing Literature Reviews – Dr. Katherine Arnoldi
There is no way to complete grad school without writing a literature review, so come to this
workshop to learn about how to write one. Find out how to choose the most relevant material,
how to write the literature review and how to compile references, along with finding answers
and solutions to common challenges.
13. Writing Skills for Success in College and Business – Inez Brown
In this age of technology, society has become more obsessed with abbreviated English, i.e.
texting, tweeting, emailing, where slang and short cuts are common. No matter how many
characters you can text in thirty seconds, that skill is no substitute for good written English. To
be successfulin college and business, you must possess quality writing skills. This workshop
will provide you with tips and tools to improve your writing skills.
