Extraction refers to isolating active ingredients from drug materials using physical or chemical means to dissolve them in a solvent, obtaining therapeutic components while eliminating inert materials. Ideal solvents are highly selective, have high extraction capacity, are non-reactive, non-toxic, and volatile. Extracts from some drugs contain multiple constituents depending on conditions. Solvents are selective as some actives only dissolve in particular solutions. Common extraction methods include percolation, infusion, decoction, digestion, maceration, Soxhlet extraction, and continuous hot percolation.
