Ecstasy, also known as MDMA, was first synthesized in 1912 by Anton Kollisch as a substance to stop abnormal bleeding, but is now an illegal stimulant drug known to induce euphoria and intimacy. While sometimes used in medicine, ecstasy use can cause numerous negative health effects such as impaired memory, depression, anxiety, sleep problems, paranoia, and even brain damage or liver damage in some cases. Detoxification treatments aim to reduce cravings for the drug.
