UNIT 4: VISUALAIDS
UNIT 4: VISUALAIDS
OBJECTIVES:
• Understand the process of preparing visual
aids for presentations.
•Learn techniques for describing visuals
effectively.
•Recognize strategies for capturing
audience attention.
•Acquire useful language for presenting
with visual aids.
Warm-up:
Effective PPT Presentation
•You are going to see some slides
•Find the problems in each slide and
suggest some ways to improve them
1- Using Power Point
• Used wisely, PowerPoint and similar programs can be
an effective tool to help audiences remember your
message, while allowing you to prove, reinforce, and
support your claims.
• Used unwisely, PowerPoint becomes a distraction that
upstages the presenter and buries the message. With its
tumbling, whooshing, flying, singing and screeching
graphics, PowerPoint can take on a life of its own.
• All these bells and whistles can disconnect the slides
from the presenter and destroy the reason for using
them in the first place--to provide an audience with at-
a-glance comprehension to support the presentation.
• Semantics can be defined as:The study of meanings
• A number of fundamental questions arise:
(1).What is meaning?
(2).What is it for an expression to have meaning?
(3). Meaning of what?
(4). How can we approach meaning?
3- The scope and goal of semantics

◼ The study of meanings, but a
number of fundamental questions
arise:
• (1). What is meaning?
• (2). What is it for an expression to have
meaning?
• (3). Meaning of what?
• (4). How can we approach meaning?
1. The acquisition of new meaning by
existing words
- Based on the occurrence of a
relationship between the old and new
meanings
2. Either the denotation or connotation
meaning within ONE word undergoes
some changes

Visual Aids: Definition and Meaning

information shared in an oral presentation.
What are some common types of
visual aids?
•Photographs/Pictures/Drawings
•Infographics
•Diagrams
•Videos
•Data charts and graphs such as pie
charts and bar charts
Why Do Presenters Use
Presentation Aids?
• Help an audience understand and remember
information in a presentation
• Keep an audience interested in the
presentation
• Inspire an audience to act on a cause or buy a
product
• Clarify the organization of the presentation
• Help the speaker remember the points to
make in the presentation
• Make a presentation more persuasive
✓THE RULE OF SIX
• a maximum of six lines per slide
• a maximum of six words per line
✓Selection of keywords or phrases
✓Use simple, bold lettering; such as for an Arial
font at least 24 point bold

Using Power Point
Suggested answer.
Using Power Point
To use visual aids effectively, remember to:
• Create visual aids that parallel the order of points in
a presentation.
• Use visual aids that are appropriate for the subject
of the presentation and the audience.
• Use visual aids that are simple and easy for the
audience to understand.
• Make visual aids large enough to be seen by the
audience.
Keep visual aids attractive through features such as
color and clarity.
• Practice with technology, pointing out key parts of
the visual aids, and introducing background
information about visual aids will help ensure that
they are incorporated smoothly into a presentation.
