An experimental showcase with 5 monkeys, as ladder, a cage, bananas and
some cold water as punishment

A group of scientists placed 5 monkeys in a cage, together
with a ladder which had bananas on the top.

Every time one monkey went up the ladder, the scientists
sprayed the other monkeys with cold water.

After a while, every time a monkey went up the ladder, the
others beat up the one that went up the ladder.

After some time, no monkey dared to go up the ladder
regardless the temptation of the bananas.

Scientists then substituted one of the monkeys.
The 1st
thing this new monkey did was to go up the ladder.
Immediately the other monkeys beat him up.

After several beatings, the new member learned not to
climb the ladder even though never knew why.

A 2nd
monkey was substituted and the same occurred. The 1st
substituted monkey participated on the beating of the 2nd
monkey. A 3rd
monkey was changed, and a 4th
and finally the
last one and every time the same thing happened.

What was left was a group of 5 monkeys that even though
never received a cold shower, continued to beat up any
monkey who attempted to climb the ladder.

So my question to you is…
If it were possible to ask the monkeys why they beat up all
those who attempted to climb the ladder, what do you think
there answer would be …?
“I don’t know, that’s the way things are done around here..”

This document discusses the transition from diversity to inclusivity in medical education and practice. It begins by outlining systemic barriers that minorities face, such as lack of institutional support and implicit biases. Microaggressions that minorities experience are provided as examples. The document then discusses recognizing privilege and the importance of being an ally in advancing inclusivity. How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental Health

Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits. To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups. Technology For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did. While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis. Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad. Age and Gender When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same. Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers. Race Affects Attitudes As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

We will experience how we can analyze the reasons for resistance to change (exercise 1) and practice how to improve our conversation style and be more in control and effective in the way we communicate (exercise 2). This session will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick). Abstract: Let’s talk about powerful conversations! We all know how to lead a constructive conversation, right? Then why is it so difficult to have those conversations with people at work, especially those in powerful positions that show resistance to change? Learning to control and direct conversations takes understanding and practice. We can combine our innate empathy with our analytical skills to gain a deeper understanding of complex situations at work. Join this session to learn how to prepare for difficult conversations and how to improve our agile conversations in order to be more influential without power. Psychological safety in teams is important; team members must feel safe and able to communicate and collaborate effectively to deliver value. It’s also necessary to build long-lasting teams since things will happen and relationships will be strained. But, how safe is a team? How can we determine if there are any factors that make the team unsafe or have an impact on the team’s culture? In this mini-workshop, we’ll play games for psychological safety and team culture utilizing a deck of coaching cards, The Psychological Safety Cards. We will learn how to use gamification to gain a better understanding of what’s going on in teams. Individuals share what they have learned from working in teams, what has impacted the team’s safety and culture, and what has led to positive change. Different game formats will be played in groups in parallel. Examples are an ice-breaker to get people talking about psychological safety, a constellation where people take positions about aspects of psychological safety in their team or organization, and collaborative card games where people work together to create an environment that fosters psychological safety.
