This document systematically reviewed 15 studies on physical therapy interventions for patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). The review found that strength training can increase muscle strength initially but strength declines more slowly than the natural course of the disease. Respiratory exercise training may improve muscle endurance and pulmonary function, particularly in patients with higher baseline function. Low frequency electrical stimulation was found to mildly improve muscle strength in younger patients and delay progressive muscle weakness. The review recommends beginning physical therapy as early as possible and more studies on functional outcomes and quality of life.
