The Story of Native Americans
When Christopher Columbus set first foot on America in 1492, he
was welcomed by brown skinned people whose physical appearance confirmed
to him in his opinion that he has last arrived to India and whom therefore,
he called Indios or Indians. These people, the Native Americans, have lived
in America for almost 12000 years. They gathered in tribes with different
races, languages, customs and cultures. There were about 550 tribes among
which lived 10 million of Indians. Cheyenne, Cherokees, Apaches and Sioux
were the most famous and powerful tribes.
During the first years, Native Americans were very helpful to the
Europeans and they guided them around what is now America.
In the 16th
and 17th
century, the Europeans; especially British,
Spanish and the French began to arrive and settle America. The British
founded the first colony “Jamestown” in Virginia in 1607. They changed the
Native American way of life for the worst. They brought with them
diseases like: small pox, Malaria, typhus and influenza that killed about 80
millions of Indians within 20 years.
Native Americans were treated like savages, killed and raped violently. The
British illegally dominated the Natives’ lands and unfairly forced them to
move-away.
Native Americans didn’t like the way they were being treated. As
a result, a war appeared between the Native Americans and the Europeans
that lasted over three centuries and left thousands of colonists and Natives
dead. The first conflict started in 1622 in Virginia and ended tragically on
the Wounded Knee massacre on December 29th
, 1890 in South Dakota
where over 350 Indian warriors, women and children were savagely
slaughtered.

  • 2. The Story of Native Americans When Christopher Columbus set first foot on America in 1492, he was welcomed by brown skinned people whose physical appearance confirmed to him in his opinion that he has last arrived to India and whom therefore, he called Indios or Indians. These people, the Native Americans, have lived in America for almost 12000 years. They gathered in tribes with different races, languages, customs and cultures. There were about 550 tribes among which lived 10 million of Indians. Cheyenne, Cherokees, Apaches and Sioux were the most famous and powerful tribes. During the first years, Native Americans were very helpful to the Europeans and they guided them around what is now America. In the 16th and 17th century, the Europeans; especially British, Spanish and the French began to arrive and settle America. The British founded the first colony “Jamestown” in Virginia in 1607. They changed the Native American way of life for the worst. They brought with them diseases like: small pox, Malaria, typhus and influenza that killed about 80 millions of Indians within 20 years. Native Americans were treated like savages, killed and raped violently. The British illegally dominated the Natives’ lands and unfairly forced them to move-away. Native Americans didn’t like the way they were being treated. As a result, a war appeared between the Native Americans and the Europeans that lasted over three centuries and left thousands of colonists and Natives dead. The first conflict started in 1622 in Virginia and ended tragically on the Wounded Knee massacre on December 29th , 1890 in South Dakota where over 350 Indian warriors, women and children were savagely slaughtered.
