MEET OUR
PRESIDENT
Laura is a scientist and engineer turned serial
entrepreneur and startup advisor. She leads tech social
impact and ethical AI development as the founder and
Managing Partner of Accel Impact Organizations,
including Accel AI Institute, Latinx in AI (LXAI), and
Research Colab. Her academic background is in Biology,
Physical Science, and Human Development. Her current
research interests include reducing bias data
representations in machine learning models, the effects
of artificial intelligence development for developing
countries, and paralleling biological and synthetic neural
networks seen in mycology, entomology, and
computational science

LATINX IN AI
RESEARCH
WORKSHOPS
For each workshop LatinX in AI partners with companies
and individuals to raise money towards the LXAI
conference travel and registration grant fund. Grants are
awarded to our members, predominantly students from
Latin American countries and Hispanic Serving
Institutions in the US.
Awards can be used towards the cost of travel,
accommodation, registration, visa fees, or per diem
meals during the co-located conference. This makes the
difference of being able to attend or not for students
who are traditionally underfunded or coming from
developing countries.

MENTOR MATCHING
ALGORITHM
Research Mentoring Programs Automated Matching.
This project was built for LatinX in AI to faciliate their
mentor matching program which pairs willing mentors
in industry and academia with aspiring AI engineers
(who are of a LatinX background). The system works
off of data compiled via an application form and then
out put to .xlsx files. The program is used via the CLI
and takes in data through a mentors sheet and a
mentees sheet before cleaning the data and
instantiating all applicants to mentor and mentee
objects, and then assigning mentees to mentors.

JOURNAL OF LATINX IN AI RESEARCH (JLXAIR)
Our organization is preparing to expand this journal to
accept full paper publications on a seasonal or rolling basis
throughout the year. Our peer-reviewed and indexed
workshop publications as well as the full paper publications
will be issued under an Open-acess copyright license to
allow for minimal restrictions and open sharing of
knowledge between authors.
These publications will be indexed and issued official DOIs
through our membership in Crossref, an official digital
object identifier Registration Agency of the International DOI

In order to fulfill this mission, the Journal of LatinX in AI
Research is accepting applications for editorial board
positions. Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis.
This Journal's scope encompasses all areas of
Artificial Intelligence including Machine Learning,
Deep Learning, Computer Vision, Natural Language,
Robotics, Data Science, and more.

intelligence ecosystem including researchers, academics,
students, nascent startups, and NGO and civil societies

improving skills and proficiency in the state of the art in
artificial intelligence, computer vision, natural language,

OUR PILOT SITE
Tecnológico de Monterrey or just Tec, is a secular
and coeducational private university founded in
Monterrey, Mexico, which has grown to include
35 campuses throughout the country.
One of only 45 universities in the World to be
ranked with 5 QS Stars, it is widely recognized as
one of the most prestigious universities in Latin
America.
Tecnologico de Monterrey has more than 40
researchers in AI-related fields, grouped in
multiple research focus groups (i.e. Robotics,
Intelligent Systems, Machine Learning,
among other), that have produced more than
300 papers in high ranked journals in the
last 4 years.
Tec established the Artificial Intelligence Hub at the Guadalajara campus
to coordinate the various AI efforts within their institutions. One of the
main goals of the AI Hub is to create, promote and foster an eco-system
of companies, start-ups, and other institutions interested in AI.
The AI Hub has a social vision, meaning “a commitment to improve
communities and support those most in need” which has resulted in a
great positive impact on society through their alumni.
