Life began in the oceans and evolved in different ways either by chance or directed mutation. Bacteria were early lifeforms that developed photosynthesis, releasing oxygen that enabled more advanced organisms. Algae were able to attach to surfaces and survive in tidal zones. Lichen formed a symbiosis between mushrooms and algae, often being pioneer organisms, while mosses and ferns also evolved, with ferns once being as tall as trees before the development of plants that reproduced through seeds.
